I'll be pretty busy the next few days, so don't expect the new update until the weekend, unless I somehow am able to cram everything today. Have fun watching the latest episode! (I have also received the manga, so look forward to seeing updates for that!) And remember, the author has never confirmed the puppet theory, this is all pure speculation, thus it is not yet confirmed true. |

Haha, oh man Ep 5 is RIPE for this theory, like it was written to validate it! I can't wait to see it deconstructed. As for the people taking this oh so seriously and getting offended or finding it a downer--c'mon, this is obviously just a bit of fun. It reminds me of that website I stumbled on years ago that PROVED BEYOND DOUBT that not only was Tom Petty dead, he's been dead since before he released his first album. |

In Ep 5 also note a reference to "Usual suspects" - a movie with a plot twist at the very end. |
So what? |

Weirder fan theories have floated around. Anyone familiar with the Tommy Westphall fan theory? The Tommy Westphall universe hypothesis is an idea discussed among some television fans, makes the claim that not only does St. Elsewhere take place within Tommy's mind, but so do numerous other television series which are directly and indirectly connected to St. Elsewhere through fictional crossovers and spin-offs, resulting in a large fictional universe taking place entirely within Tommy's mind. In 2002 writer Dwayne McDuffie wrote Six Degrees of St. Elsewhere for the Slush Factory website, the earliest version of the hypothesis to be found online. In a 2003 article published on BBC News Online, St. Elsewhere writer Tom Fontana was quoted as saying, "Someone did the math once... and something like 90 percent of all [American] television took place in Tommy Westphall's mind. God love him." Read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Westphall#The_Tommy_Westphall_Universe_Hypothesis Chill and let people have their fun. It's interesting even if it might be totally wrong. |

I'm still not buying the puppet theory but... it appears that there is at least an interesting dark undertone to the series that sets it apart from other simple slice of lifes. Will see if we get a Usual Suspects ending or if that was just a reference like those we've had to Saint Seya Omega etc. |

The OP uses "generic" in his post. Does he mean it as something negative? |
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old? I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them? I wonder how long people would put up with this. As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series. |

Indeed! I find Yuyushiki a very unique slice-of-life for this reason. This and the focus on the tsukkomi character. Most SoL (at least the ones I watched) make the innocent girl (like Hidamari Sketch's Yuno, Azumanga Daioh's Chiyo), the weird girl (like K-ON's Yui, Chuunibyou's Rikka) or the playful girl (YuruYuri's Kyouko) as the main, or focused character. While in these series the tsukkomi only role is to be part of the main cast and make tsukkomi for the boke character, here the focus is all on Yui, a tsukkomi character with not only one, but two kinds of boke girls who loves to tease her. And to add more, even the supporting cast focus on her Aikawa, who wants to be "friends" with her... friends, yeah... Oka-chi, who sees her as a rival... (because of Aikawa) If there's another slice-of-life like this, please tell me, I would love to watch it. |

When I said "generic moe," I didn't mean it in a condescending way. What I meant was that the anime is in the traditional comedy slice-of-life school setting, the plot and characters has nothing to do with it. If you want, I can change it for a more appropriate term. Also, I'll be done with the update either tonight or tomorrow, I've been somewhat busy lately. |

I agree with both of you, it's (supposed to be) just generic slice of life at first glance, but it's not at the same time! Fans also have noticed the difference as seen in this amazon jp's review page http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00BTWFOP4 |

I think puppet theory has too many flaws at this point, but here are some thoughts on episode 6 nonetheless: For puppet theory: Yuzuko puts on a skit, as is the purpose of puppets. Yui has another weird breakdown (laughing fit). The "special needs councillor" aka. "Mom" seems to be playing along with the "puppet's" joke about the spider. "Mom" lets them come over to her house, as a normal teacher might not. "Mom" says "it's okay [to be too loud] every once in a while, I think," to Yui, which sounds like something a special needs councillor would say. No one cares when Yui hits the "puppets" (not just in this episode). Yui speaks on behalf of the "puppets" several times, like "she really wants to see your closet" @ "Mom." The whole "I want to shine" scene could be representative of Yui wanting to lead a successful life, but not being able to because her abnormalities are getting in the way. It's also potentially interesting how Yuzuko and Yukari direct their "I want to shine" at Yui, as if to say only she has the power to make that happen. The "puppets" plan to sleep over at Yui's on Christmas, which is a time normally spent with your own family (unless Japan has different customs regarding that). More allusions to Yui's messed up childhood. I think the God/miracle scene sort of speaks for itself. Yui needs a miracle, but she isn't getting one. Against puppet theory: Solo shot of Yuzuko at the start. Although, the room wasn't shown, nor was Yuzuko moving around much. The "puppets" have thoughts. Could just be that personality of Yui's thinking? People refer to Yui and the "puppets" as "the three of them," even when Yui isn't around. They could just be so used to humoring Yui that it's instinct? Perhaps Yui's multiple personality disorder makes it reasonable to refer to the "puppets" as separate people? Yuzuko and Yukari do different things than Yui at the same time. Could just be an artistic representation of her state of mind? |

We are already half way trought, and fir the preview the chapter 7 will be as normal as the others. For a deconstruction to happen it has to be triggered half way trought the series and... is not hapening. Tbh i'm a little disapointed it turned iut to be false, it was interresting while it lasted. Having gone through 5 books of the manga... I don't think it's there. The puppet scene is there in book two but that's it really. They do bring up death a lot all the way to the end of the 5th book but it is used in a humorous, sarcastic way. Certainly no big reveal that they are puppets that I could see. There are more characters later on and they interact with the ones that would not exist according to the conspiracy theory so again I don't think there is anything to it unless the anime is quite different in the end. But I will do a more thorough reading soon in case I missed anything. I was chatting with the mangaka on twitter this morning about where to pick up and start reading Manga Time KR magazine after where book 5 leaves off (the answer is the April issue) so I can ask if there are deeper themes under the "girls in school slice of life" manga they have written. I won't flat out ask if they are puppets as I don't want to look that silly LOL Edit: actually I lied, I don't have the first book yet since it is back ordered so I am going by books 2-5. So the one chance left is that something is in book one but I doubt it. |

alexpte said: We may all know Yuyushiki as another generic moe series for us to watch casually. But after compiling some data, we may have to look at Yuyushiki at a whole new perspective. Meet Yui, the main blonde-haired protagonist of the series. She is the only level-headed person in the trio of friends. But why is that? BECAUSE HER OTHER TWO FRIENDS YUZUKO AND YUKARI DOESN'T EXIST. In episode two, we see Yui holding imitation puppets of Yukari on the right and Yuzuko on the left. Throughout the anime, these positions of the "real" people never change, when they're walking, shopping, or whatever. This insinuates that Yui is a lonely person, therefore talks to these puppets and giving them names similar to hers. Also, there are commonly dream-like auras during the series, the fluffy white borders. This can be her dream state, perhaps a relapse of memories before a traumatic incident that caused her hallucinations. Okaa-san, actually a school nurse, lets Yui use the Data Entry Club alone in order for her to forget her past for a while. Okaa-san also uses the whiteboard in order to figure out Yui's current train of thought. There are only two computers because there were never three people: just Yui and occasionally Okaa-san. Another fact to point out: Her name is Yui Ichii, in English, if ignoring the correct Japanese characters for "Ichii," would translate to "only one." Also, if we take the title "Yuyushiki," again ignoring the correct Japanese spelling, it would translate to "evening demon." And of course, these puppets are the only "people" in the series with unnatural hair color in a realistic point of view. Is this all speculation? Pretty much. But I'd like to see this happen, with the last few episodes revealing Yui's mental trauma. A nice plot twist for those bored of the generic moe genre. Larger picture EPISODE 3 UPDATE We see Yui drowning Yuzuko in a playful manner, as if to reject her traumatic incident that may perhaps involve drowning. This is evidenced as later both Yuzuko and Yukari continually ask what water is, as if they are telling Yui to confront her past. There are two instances where Yuzuko's eyes are circled inside, which signifies confusion. One is when she talks about obtaining psychic powers, which of course is a psychological issue. The second is when she proclaims that she is dead. Again, perhaps another instance showing Yui's hidden trauma. Yui starts telling a story about the death of a man's wife. It may insinuate her very own mother, as we never see her, plus, Yukari calls her Mama-san, not the usual Okaa-san traditional families use. Also, the "Mama-san" we hear says that Yui is quiet all the time, though the room echos and is easy to hear what happens in the house. Yui never admits that's her actual mother. Yui also has a computer in her room, yet why doesn't she use it? Because her "friends" aren't here? This is the third computer seen in this series and Okaa-san admits to keeping the supposed third club computer. Perhaps Mama-san is really Okaa-san keeping tabs on Yui for anything strange that happens. That may be the reason why the trio calls their teacher "Okaa-san" because she visits Yui a lot and call her Mama-san at home to differentiate her positions. Yui texts her "friends" but for some reason adds a gun emoticon at the end. Though the text is somewhat threatening, was it really necessary to place a gun in there? Especially with the black and brown swirling miasma background, why not use the regular room? We don't see her hand too, perhaps this was a flashback of a threat letter made before her trauma started? More dream-like auras. So seemingly innocent and happy yet I can't help but feel creeped out. A flashback of happier times... Yukari talks about how she was poisoned and can't do anything else but die. Perhaps another traumatic experience. Oh yeah, fun fact. Both Yukari and Yuzuko have now officially "died" this episode. Yukari and Yuzuko are always in sync with one another. Why is that? Because they're just only puppets. Throughout the series we see multiple times in the background a Tamazon box, a parody of course to Amazon. In Japanese, the word "tama" means "soul." This can be associated with hitodama, the fiery balls of a soul that separates from the body. Hitodama appear usually during times of darkness and are associated with people of the afterlife. The logo also looks like the eye of the devil. That's it for episode 3, there are way too many coincidences for me to assume Yuyushiki is just another generic moe anime. Again, I will repeat that this is all mere speculation. EPISODE 4 UPDATE In the beginning of the episode, Yui and Yukari greet a fellow classmate, though Yukari's hello was ignored and the classmate continues a conversation with Yui. (garydx25) After their conversation, Yukari as Yui who that person is. Yui responds that they have gym class together, but Yukari can't recall. This is due to the fact that Yui is unable to bring her puppets to gym class for sanitary and health reasons. Either that, or Yukari is just forgetful (especially with her eyes closed all the time). Yuzuko calls out a "motivation beam" in which Yuzuko completely disregards and instead asks if it was a "time reverse beam." This may be Yui's subconscious hoping in some way to reverse time to redo mistakes in her life, and the motivation to become a better person now. These two sides are fighting against one another until Yuzuko's motivation beam loses. This means Yui is still clinging on to her past. It's Yuzuko in puppet form! She says hi to Okaa-san and Okaa-san replies, playing along with Yui. Also, think about it. What kind of person leans that way in such a perfect angle? Calling her Okaa-san mistakenly in public multiple times, Yui accidently starts a trend. Yuzuko draws a peace of a puzzle on her paper. Insignificant, though puzzle-making is a proven medium of preventing memory loss, perhaps to counteract with Yukari's forgetfulness. Yuzuko possesses what may be a maneki-neko charm, or a beckoning cat charm. This is associated with good luck and fortune, yet is useless if a puppet is the one holding it. During this entire scene, not once has Aikawa conversed with anyone other than Yui. It is as if the other two are completely ignored, any movements that may insinuate that she notices them are pure coincidences, even at the end when she says goodbye. In the Date Entry Club room, Yui uses the puppets to converse with Okaa-san. She sits there mute. Yukari states that Yuzuko doesn't have a mom, in which Yui responds surprised. During this scene, the words "Oh... I see..." is said, yet no one's mouth moved during that time. Perhaps Yui has accidentally failed her ventriloquism during this sequence. Yuzuko asks Okaa-san if she could be her mother instead, which of course is Yui speaking out. Yui, feeling guilty, decides to take back what she said by saying she is "still alive," though Okaa-san knows she is not. Feeling bad for Okaa-san for going to far with her puppets, Yui decides to stop bothering her. Yet again, these puppets are always in sync. (garydx25) Wait! What happened to the person sitting on that chair! It wasn't empty just a few seconds ago! Since this story is told in Yui's point of view, this perspective is taken differently at a realistic point, and since both Yukari and Yuzuko are puppets, obviously they won't be sitting on a chair. We see Mikimedia, a parody of Wikipedia. The word "Miki" can be interpreted in multiple ways. As a person's surname, it means "three trees," which represents the trio of girls. As a regular name, it means "beautiful chronicle." Thus, this series is about a beautiful story about the three girls Yui, Yukari, and Yuzuko. Though multiplying these numbers have no meaning, adding them up would equal to 169. That number is the perfect square of the number 13, which is associated with many ominous superstitions and bad luck. A third "mother" comes, except this time it is Yuzuko and Yukari calling themselves "Mama." This is the start of Yui's public mental breakdown at school. More dream-like auras. They always look like flashbacks. Yui's mental breakdown has started. Aikawa notices Yui alone (again, totally disregarding the puppets) and walks towards her to see what is wrong. Yui responds she is fine, then suddenly thrusts her puppets at Aikawa, in which she starts having a breakdown and laughing maniacally until she passes out. Aikawa is worried and takes the unconscious Yui to the nurse. As Yui wakes up after her mental breakdown, she wonders where her puppets are. Well, this is the end of the episode 4 update. To be honest, I got pretty lazy so this post arrived a little late. And again, *insert disclaimer here.* EPISODE 5 UPDATE The trio plays a game where two of the players stay still whereas the other player can move. Yui is the first to go, signifying that Yukari and Yuzuko are puppets as they are the ones staying still as Yui moves. The game ends when Yui pulls a scissor, thus Yui forever remains the moving player as Yukari and Yuzuko remain the unmoving ones (as puppets). This may also insinuate an incident involving sharp objects. Many talks of weapons. Yuzuko suggests a method to prevent crimes, perhaps one that could have stopped one in the past. Proof that these dream-like auras are flashbacks. Here is the introduction of Yui's "mother." Her voice sounded different than what we heard from in episode 3, though that may be my imagination. Another scenario where Yukari may have been kidnapped. And a dream-like aura from a more current time. Taken at a different viewpoint, Yukari lies bleeding, hoping to survive and live for the next day. I was surprised by the amount of talks of death there was in this episode. Many what if and why questions involving death. Yui imagines a scenario of Yuzuko's death. Yukari wishes she contracted a mild case of amnesia, even though she admits previousy to be very forgetful. This may be directed a Yui, who perhaps want to forget the recent events of her life and relive the past. The trio promises to die together, though in the end they admit one must be lying. This of course is Yui, who is able to stay alive even though the other two died, perhaps even together. Unable to keep her promise to the other two, Yui makes puppets of Yukari and Yuzuko so they can stay together forever, even if it is just in spirit and promises to live their lives in their stead. Foreshadowing perhaps? This is it for episode 5, 7 more episodes to go until the end of the anime series! Be sure to pick up the original manga series if you haven't already! Just remember, as always, this is in no way, shape, or form the actual story of Yuyushiki! This is all pure speculation! EPISODE 6 UPDATE The dream-like auras are here again, with the trio in innocent bliss. Yui uses the Yuzuko puppet to turn their heads in sync to face the Yukari puppet with the same dumbfounded expression. Right off the bat we see Yui in another mental breakdown with Chiho to witness the scene again. The puppets are completely ignored and Chiho goes off in a monologue worrying about Yui. Yui of course spits out her favorite word: "death." By this time, the school acknowledges Yuzuko and Yukari as separate entities from Yui, seeing that their personalities greatly differ from the puppeteer and act "independent" from the owner. Another moment of Yukari's amnesiac persona. "Mitsu" means "light," and as Yukari and Yuzuko say "do something mitsu," they want Yui to embrace the light and accept the dreadful reality. Japan is well known for having one of the highest suicide rates in the world. In recent years, this rate has been increasing exponentially. In 1998, Japan saw a 34.7% rise in suicide rates from the previous year. A year later, 1999, was the highest number of suicides seen in recent Japanese history, not including that of the twenty-first century. Another detrimental problem Japan is facing is the ever-aging population. It is expected that by 2020, the elderly population will grow 24%, with a majority of these elderly sent to hospitals after suicide attempts in order for the Department of Psychiatry to study psychosociomedical problems that plagues the nation. It can be assumed that in the future, Yui will be one of those that will attempt suicide due to psychological problems. More indescribable scribble for Okaa-san to decipher. Yui uses Yuzuko to intimidate Okaa-san for props to perform dangerous stunts but then settles for visiting her house instead. It can be assumed that it is Yui's first time coming over Okaa-san's house, and yet she doesn't ask Okaa-san about the missing third computer behind her. Because a third computer is not need in the Data Processing Club since it's just only her and the occasional Okaa-san, it is not necessary for her to ask. Yui decides to make funny comments in order to cure her boredom and Okaa-san also decided to jump in. Notice how Yuzuko says "Okaa-san" when referring to her "mom", rather than "Mama-san" or other variants of mother because Yui is at Okaa-san's house and feels right at home. Getting annoyed by her own puppets, Yui experiences a slight breakdown, but was able to recover and apologizes to Okaa-san. This is clear and concrete evidence that Okaa-san is related to Yui's private life, I mean look at that ass. Clearly Okaa-san must have interacted with Yui long enough in order to develop such well-defined buttocks. Like seriously, one does not simply obtain such a perfect behind without taking care of a child regularly. When conversing with her puppets, Yui was surprised when one of her classmates was able to overhear the conversation. Yui believed no one was able to hear, yet she was unaware that everyone can. We were shown a dark past where even the young Yui thought of reality in such a dark perspective at an early age. It is clearly obvious that Yuzuko did not have a soul in first place since she is a puppet, but her god Yui was able to bring her to life. The episode ends with a monologue from God in the guise of the snowflake, stating that whoever he touches experiences a miracle. Yui walks by God, but misses him by a few feet, thus God disappears with the snowflake and Yui is unable to experience the miracle she always needed even though that miracle was so close to her. Another episode down, more to go! I must say though, even without the Puppet Theory, Yuyushiki is still a fun series to watch. Also, if you haven't caught on by now, my comment about Okaa-san's butt is completely false and was meant to humor you. If you took it seriously or were somehow offended by it, I give my apologies. Have a nice day! MANGA This is a preview of the original manga if you guys are interested. With enough requests, I might as well do the manga also. OTHER This is a disclaimer saying that everything here is all complete speculation. I am not telling the "true" story of Yuyushiki, nor am I trying to convince you that my interpretation is true. you are are free to believe whatever you want, I am here to provide a different perspective of the anime. Also, if you see something that I have missed, for example finding more evidence of the puppet/trauma theory, feel free to message me and I'll add it in with credits to you. Most of all, please enjoy Yuyushiki! The only response possible for this mess of insanity Note: i post this in line with the context of the thread and its content, don't take it too heart. |

I think you missed something in episode 3, sorry if it's already mentioned but: They meet at the bookstore without Yui present, episode 3 around 16:10... |

Well, this is like something that belongs on TvTropes. Some mind-bending stuff, I'll say... ...to add my own WMG, maybe Yui Ichii is actually Yui Funami from YuruYuri. Maybe one day, something happened to Yui's friends, (or everything got replaced in a new universe.) If everything got replaced in a new universe that would also make sense, since Yui Funami was often portrayed as lonely in YuruYuri (living alone for example) So this Yui Ichii is even lonlier than Yui Funami. They are both voiced my Minami Tsuda, and both have a pink-haired friend voiced by Rumi Ookubo. Perhaps Yuzuko is some sort of recreation/replacement of Chinatsu Yoshikawa, complete with the bi-curiousness/crush on Yui. Yukari... I don't know, but her name both ending in "kari" reminds me a bit of Akari. Hmm... "Yuyushiki" "YuruYuri" similar titles. Same voice actors, really, it shouldn't be like Japan never noticed the similarities xD (not saying my theory is involved, my theory is crap :p) |

Doom1491 said: Well I didn't read the whole Thread but I don't know how you can justify that Yuzuko and Yukari can speak with Okâ-san in Episode 7^^ Whenever Yukari and Yuzuko talk to people or are spoken to if you consider them puppets the people are just playing along with Yui who is speaking through them~ |

You could also say that those scenes play out in Yui's mind, who imagines her puppets having their own lives. You can't really disprove or prove any theory, but you can argue about the strength (and puppet theory is pretty weak, as I think we can all agree). |

Hm. The way Yui acts almost seems just a bit... Well, I mean the anger she often lashes out in. Maybe it's a side affect of her "condition". Also, in episode 4, Yui mistook Yuzuko and Yukari's statement of "morning" ad "mourning", and Yui replies "I haven't been crying for anyone." Perhaps. That was a lie. Maybe she says that to her puppets as a form of reassurement and denying she actually is sad over something or someone... |

I almost fell from my chair when I got to this part: When we're seeing it from the main trio's perspective, Yuzuko and Yukari are there with Yui and Aikawa, but once we are listening to the other girls' conversation, we no longer see the two imaginary friends. |

In episode 9 Yukari talks with girls other than Yui and Yuzuko in the hall while Yui and Yuzuko are in the classroom. But then the doll scene from manga volume 1 is shown in the previous for episode 10... |

You guys may have noticed that I kinda got lazy. I'll be updating as soon as possible.~ Also, the post now shows blanks instead of screenshots now because I have reached my bandwidth limit on my Photobucket account. It'll take time transferring them to other photo sharing sites, so please be patient with me. ^-^ |
