I'd really like to watch the series but I am unsure where to start. Should I watch the original first? also, how close are the plots? identical?

Plot is similar in many aspect. I read that the series composition and structure is going to be very similar but a lot of the minor details, from character to mecha, are different. You do not need to know about the original before you watch the new series.
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

As someone familiar and that has watched both versions, let me answer then:

They are very different series. The plot remains the same, but things happen in a different way, there are new characters with minor new stories, events happen differently, some are totally different, new events, the new characters are mainly girls, the original lacked female presence greatly.

Some minor scenes present in the original are not present in the remake, some characters backgrounds have changed as well.

So current Yamato is not only a remake but a complete overhaul.

Checking your profile I advice against watching the original first, older anime is very hard to digest for contemporary fans like you, you don't seem attracted at all to older anime, not mentioning this is from the 70s. Worst case you will drop it due to the dated animation, rough edges, animation and all those things contemporary fans don't like about older anime, it would be a shame.

Watch current series, you will become enamored most likely, then you will have to watch the older anime if you wish to continue the story, heck, watch the orignal, too may differences to ignore the original, but it will be easier to digest, you will be immersed in the series and the technical limitations of series of the 70s (older anime in general) will no longer be an issue.

If you are genuinely interested in older anime then watch whichever you like, but I would still advice to watch current one first.

Let me just say that there are remakes and REMAKES, this one is doing a MAGNIFICENT job, improving GREATLY the original series, it has been widely recognized by veteran and new fans a like, which has translated in fantastic disc sales and tv ratings for this remake.

Imporant: If you decide to watch the original, only watch the subbed version by central anime and forget about that travesty, that disgraced-mutilated version called star blazers.

Thank you 9988, I really appreciate detailed response and have decided that I'll watch the original first.
Although I was a bit offended at first, being labeled a "contemporary fan", I guess its a fair definition when compared to anime fans of the 70's 80's and early 90's (Everythings relative right?)

I have indeed struggled to watch older series, and you are mostly correct with regard to the reasons why; While old animation doesn't bother me, I find the narratives and characterizations generally take way longer than contemporary series and I typically struggle to maintain interest long before the first arc begins.
Personally I believe this to be a symptom of they way contemporary anime fans have been conditioned to expect clearer characterization and shorter 13-26 episode arcs. (I still try my best T.T)

I am definitely more excited to watch the remake now with your recommendation but I also value the importance of the original and find it rewarding/ mentally satisfying when I am aware of the differences between an original and a remake. Im happy to hear that its selling but I guess that was to be expected on name recognition alone, am I right to assume that it'll also sell well with western nostalgia market? even though Im sure most people's exposure to it was the "disgraced-mutilated version called star blazers."

@ Ash_f2d

My apologies, it was not mean as an offense to you, I was being defensive thou, its rare to find people that appreciate older anime, it makes me genuinely happy when someone gives a try to older anime, not mentioning a great classic by Leiji Matsumoto.

Indeed, Leiji Matsumoto and Yamato are icons of Japanese Animation, the name recognition helped greatly surely and the awesome thing is that the remake did not disappoint but all the contrary, I find it quite appealing to new fans, it was modernized magnificently.

I think it would have good chances of success in the western market if it ever gets licensed over there, fans re loyal to classics, but currently only available in Japan with great success.

I think watching the original --> remake is excellent choice, I only recommended it backwards because I was unsure if you liked older anime or not which dont seem that accessible form the get-go compared to new anime.

If the animation is not the main issue then the better, many people mention this as the primary factor to not give older anime a try.

I think you will find Yamato pretty rewarding and wont disappoint. The remake wont be complete until August/September, good time frame to watch the 3 seasons and movies.

I am currently re-watching the older series while I wait for the remake to be complete, and yes, the experience to compare both works of diferent eras its quite rewarding.

STARBLAZERS 2199

Don't know if I should find this good or bad, but my heart sank reading starblazers known how localizing the 1st series was under that name. For now I will stick to the BD versions with English subtitles better unless Funimation licenses this.
