Well, the title's pretty self explanitory, but basically this is where you'd post stuff about the upcoming movie.

All I've been able to assertain is that this version of Akira is written by Katsuhiro Otomo (who the heck else could write it?!), is being produced or handled in some way by Leonardo DeCaprio, and isn't set in Japan. I have a bit of a problem with that last thing though, especially since this is supposed to be, at least in part, a commentary on the bombings of Japan, but as a friend pointed out to me, that's a theme and a fear that anyone can relate to. Hopefully, this won't impact the movie too much.

Got any links for some more information?

I liked Akira, so hopefully this can be pulled off decent.

My main concerns are the looks of Kaneda's bike and whether or not they will follow the manga or the movie. Either way, it will at least be interesting.

....That's ugly... I swear a couple of months ago I read that Otomo was writing the script. Now I just read something that said Gary Whitta is writing the script. He's a writer who's bounced from Futurama to Death Jr. and, honestly, I don't think he's up to the task. Now, I'm skeptical.

Then again, it says on his wiki page that he contributed to Gears of War, but that game wasn't exactly story driven. I hope this project doesn't become entirely action based.

Hmm the writer for futurama. I liked watching that just wasn't that exciting. You can't really call a series like that and say its good for a writer since its just for pleasure, because theres no real plot in it.

Could an American like Leonardo play Kaneda? Or would they Americanize it? I bet Leo's a bit too old to be a "teen" biker gang leader! LOL

Hmm thats goona be hard in our society to pull off that gang type. You dont hear about many gangs driving on bikes destroying everything, atleast not near me. This is the main point where you either excell or fail. They have to decide if they keep with the original or try to change it to fit the society and which one works better, or how to find a middle ground to keep both sides happy without scewing either side over.

Leonardo said he would not have a role in the movie, acting wise. I think that's really just a bummer since he's such an amazing actor!

Hopefully they keep the bikes! An Akira without Kaneda's awesome wheels is a movie I just don't want to see.

Oh yeah, the whole story revolved on the young biker gang so it would be pretty disappointing not to feature them.

I think Leo could still have a role, he could play the Colonel!

Also, is this gonna be live action or 3-D?

From everything I've heard, its live action. The only 3D anime adaptation I've heard of since Blame is Astroboy, of which there are pictures posted. Of course, I do think there will be heavy amounts of CGI, especially for the city scenes in the beginning.

In yet another contradiction, I have found a blog talking about Leo playing Kaneda. Granted, this is from Feburary, so the contents are questionable.

For those who don't wanna deal with clicking on the link, I'll sum it up for you. Basically, the movie will be set in New Manhattan, which was destroyed and then rebuilt with Japanese money. The producers of this movie are supposedly Appian Way, who did such movies as the Aviator and The 11th Hour.

The Akira film is going to have its title change, can't tell you though, that's a paradox. DiCaprio went "The Departed" with this, ala its based off another movie but you can't really tell and its not the aim of that film to be marketed as "_______ THE MOVIE" or "_____ THE AMERICA VERSION".

Hollywood is definitely going to dirty the three cult classics:
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Akira
Ghost in the Shell.

It's just so sad and painful to see how badly made these movies are going to be.

Never fear dear child Neon Genesis Evangelion was dropped indefinitely. Now don't have so little faith in the American Film industry, they have their ups and downs but sometimes even the most absurd pitch turns out into a fantastic film.

I do agree with you. Having Akira and Ghost in the Shell as personal favorites, I just keep on telling myself that Hollywood must not and should not f_ck this up! They messed up a lot of classics already and I'm pretty sure they'll be more carefull.

I too have faith in di Caprio and Spielberg that they'll be able to churn out "decent" renditions of our favorite anime. I think the news that they are consulting the Japanese creators is a good beginning and would be positive.

So let just keep optimistic, if they turn out to be crap we always have the option of watching another film.
