THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

One of the better OP's of the season imo. Finally...subs for the show I've been waiting for and it doesn't disappoint. Masato Hagiwara is voicing the show's character of interest Toua Tokuchi just as he voiced the titular characters of both Akagi and Kaiji.

As you probably expect, this show has quite a bit in common with both Akagi and Kaiji in that it's a gambling show with a solid dose of the psychological. Toua is definitely a lot more like Akagi than Kaiji. Other than the black woman's neck, I loved everything and I'm looking forward to more episodes, subs permitting. This episode leaves off on a bit of a nail-biter and the next episode preview doesn't really give much away either.

It was alright. The explanations went a bit overboard as they often do in these types of shows and currently it's none too exciting, but once it heats up it should be fun to watch.

So question about this show. Because I haven't had the time to check out Akagi or Kaiji, I'm not to sure of what the emphasis in the show is, but does it concentrate more on the sports aspect or more pscyhological/suspense/drama type of stuff?

Just curious.

The latter, I'd say. The pitcher wins all the time because of technique, not speed. The series does indeed have its share of mindgames, in a very similar to Kaiji/Akagi-fashion.

Completely agreed, one of the best shows of the season if not the best.

Gambling and pscyhological is what stands out in Akagi and Kaiji. There'll be a second season of Kaiji which will probably air next year so I would watch it asap :D.

Yea, same with me. Although the only baseball I like is anime baseball, along with all other sports. Maybe because they dont waste time and its not as boring.

Gay. I hate sports shows like that where the main character constantly wins. Take Prince of Tennis for example, it was cool the first 10 or so times when Ryoma won but after that it got old. I can see this getting even more tiring since the main character looks like an asshole.

In any case I thought this episode was decent. The black women pissed me off for some reason though.

2 things that came up when I was watching:

Holy bishounen Batman, regarding the opening. Also, I found myself doing "Zawa Zawa" during a few moments during the episode.

Looking forward for more.

Not bad.

Since it is related to Aiji & Akagi, I will give it a try even if I don't like the setting and the characters at all right now.

lol I agree. But it won't be as interesting if the main character sucked, right? I would've dropped this already if I saw the common formula in sports. Where the main character sucked in the beginning, because he's weak, lame or whatever. But becomes good because he has "special ability", "kind-hearted person".. (eg. Eyeshield 21).

The main character follows the "total badass" archetype in this show, as opposed to the "kind hearted wimp that keeps getting better" archetype. Whether one or the other works depends 100% on execution.

No but it would still be interesting if he was somewhere in the middle ;). I really hope he doesn't go through the whole series with only 1 or 2 losses.

I've never seen/read ES 21 before but I saw the pitcher, Toua, resembling Hisoka from Hunter X Hunter. Which could be why my initial impression of him was a creepy badass.

I've never seen either Akagi or Kaiji, nor do I like sports anime all that much (or baseball for that matter =P), but this show has potential to be an exception.

The opening cracked me up. I was laughing so hard, lol. It's so fanservicey, and Toua seems to have a really hard time keeping his pants buttoned/zipped up. Oh, was I the only one who noticed that? *cough* Er yeah, I liked the opening. *ahem* I may watch more of this. *nods*

rofl'd at "Baseball is sacred!!!"

Looks like the pitcher is going to be Akagi-style god mode. I'd much prefer a new type of character (one who isn't a clone of either Akagi or Kaiji), so that's what I'll be hoping for in the next few episodes. Just something different.

Both Akagi and Toua are psychos, only difference is one is into mahjong and another one is into baseball. This anime just shows how powerful mind is, and what can be done if manipulated correctly which in this case, bring you loads of $$$.
