It's not often I come across a protagonist like this in anime. This guy... is a pretty chill guy. He doesn't feel like anime male protagonist the likes of which you see in series like Xam'd Lost Memories, Gankutsuou, The Last Exile, Eureka Seven, and others. He doesn't need to be a try-hard, he doesn't have try-hard ambitions like that pink haired guy, he's not a fish out of water, he doesn't feel special and spotlight-worthy, and he doesn't have a naive moral code. He's just a dude that wants to make money to survive and happens to be very skilled in various things. His expertise in the mech doesn't feel like it makes him some prodigy whose job is to defeat the bad guy but rather an extension of him being a practical guy whose skills help him survive.

The female protagonist is also decently done. Part of her character is pining for the male protagonist but she's also a very active protagonist in her own right because she genuinely wants to do her job well. While she's not a tsundere he's got a realistic kind of confidence and doesn't take shit from anyone.

They're not the most spectacular characters but they feel natural, which is something that's hard to come by in anime. That is, unless they screw it up.

More broadly speaking Bones continues its trend of having an outsider come into a close knit crew of people because they love the idea of human bonds. Though unlike with future series like Xam'd Lost Memories they seem to be taking themselves less seriously which makes it a lot less in your face. For now.
