Spoiler for the whole show:

Luckily the story is mostly unimportant for the show... but it's sad.

Actually this is true if you assume time is preordained, sorta linear. If time is more like a set of simultaneous worlds happening at once, which is the most popular theory right now, then he has saved the world. Since he defeated the invaders and prevented the end of the world, something that did not happen in his timeline, he has successfully diverted the timeline of his younger self creating an entirely different world from beyond his death.

This is where I'll try to make up for the lack of story explanations :P

Since the "the protagonist is that key!" then we are to assume a time traveler, the protagonist, was the cause of the original apocalyptic catastrophe in his timeline. Assuming time is linear and repeating itself, like xLucky thought, then it would be an infinite cycle where in 2012 Aliens would invade Earth. This is where they try to break out of that cycle.

We know that a time traveler is what caused the gate to open but what we don't know, or at least what has never been done, is the time traveler using is dormant telekinesis powers to send the Invaders back. This could be how he lost his powers in the first place as its seen that he reabsorb his telekinesis from his younger self. It's probably smartest to assume that Fumiaki failed to stop the Invaders which would caused the catastrophe to repeat itself. What I assume that in this timeline he in fact did manage to stop the Invasion due to some unknown variable that the story hasn't divulge to us about yet.

It's really heart dropping to see so much potential go up in smoke and mirrors like this series did. At least the ending was badass awesome :D
