I can't believe a series like this is buried here with such a low rating, while stuff like Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2 is in the top 10. Really makes you wonder about the MyAnimeList demographics.

Watching this great series from the 80's also makes you realize how sterile and stupid today's anime has become.

It doesn't make me wonder at all. I always knew everyone on this site was a bloody idiot.

Late post.

Completely ignore the score in MAL when i'm looking for a good old anime to watch there are dozens of 80's and 90's animes that are underrated, guess some people just can't stand old animation and art.

your looking at the demographics of MAL are kids who will not pick up series that were made before they were born....and if they did, will compare its animation to what's been out at the moment

I like Code Geass too (though season 1 is a lot better than R2) but this is a really great series and I haven't really seen anything else like it. It's very colorful and has good music...very fun to watch.

Indeed, CG is an excellent show. However, nothing compares to oldschool goodness and anime with the 80's feel specificaly. I don't imagine kids could enjoy anime with dated art and not much of a plot, referencing forgotten titles and obscure era, nor do I think they should. But for any serious anime lover, BG Crysis is a gem. I personaly love characters and voicing (original) and the feel of it with music and all, dropping failures it has in other departments. BG Crysis\Crash is one of my favourite shows. They realy should make a top for underrated anime here.

Popularity really shouldn't matter when you're trying to get into some works of fiction. I mean Code Geass was pretty entertaining but I don't think it was as memorable as a lot of shows I've seen. Recently rewatched Bubblegum and the show was still endearing. It has plenty of flaws but also a lot of heart and care and it's a damn shame studio infighting kind of cut its legs out from under it.

Kind of sucks that the remake was a bit underwhelming since I think the concept is so great especially as corporations are making more money and real life cyber/robotic tech gets better. Maybe we'll get a true remake with all the original parties involved that will put the franchise on par with Ghost in the Shell in terms of popularity.

Most anime fans want to keep up with the latest shows rather than going back 20 years to check out what was hot back then. I don't think it's a bad thing to do. Why should everyone keep talking years and years about shows like Cowboy Bebop or NGE when pretty much everything has already been said and people have moved on to new shows already.

I don't really understand old anime glorification while bashing new anime too much either, but I do sort of miss this type of 80s retrofuturism thing that Bubblegum Crisis totally is. Sci-Fi as a genre has changed a lot in 30 years and blue gritty cyberpunk looks have changed into clean and white touch screen filled worlds :P

But yea Bubblegum Crisis is excellent show! Has some flaws but doesn't stop it from being a very good cyberpunk anime, which has always been too rare breed.

I agree. Extremely underrated. But then again, MAL is a product of its time and you cannot expect people who were born ten or fifteen years after some of these series were made to look at them and appreciate them in the same way some of us "oldtimers" do. Animation ages more than and that gorgeous hand painted look is not for everyone. Never mind the synthrock music (which I personally love!)

My rule of thumb with the MAL scoring system is to add half a point for anything older than 2000 and an entire point for anything done before 1990. That will give you a good idea of how good a show is.
