First off - bummer, man! Sorry to hear about both your dad and your mom. As I mentioned earlier (I think... maybe it was another forum...) my mom died when I was in my early 30s. It was very sudden and there wasn't any aspect of them hiding it from the family either. Her illness crept up on her, and her doctors, just as much as it did on the rest of us. By the time they actually diagnosed what was wrong, there was nothing they could do to stop the progression of the disease. That was tough, but I can't imagine how tough it would have been if I was still in my teen years. (My dad just died last year, 15 years after my mom.)

The situation you describe is similar, but it lacks the aspect that I think was a mistake on the part of Wakana's fictional family: Time. It sounds like your dad deid suddenly with no warning, like my mom. Your mom, while she kept her condition hidden from you, told you about it with enough time for you to spend some quality time with her now, which is priceless. Wakana's parents knew she was ill with plenty of time to let a bright young girl like Wakana know what was happening and give her time to come to grips with it while her mother was alive, but chose to keep it secret in order to keep her focus on her exams. The school she was applying to is filled with people who loved Wakana's mother. I think a better approach would have been for the mother to talk to the principle and vice principle and let them know the situation so they could take the family circumstances into account in their admission decisions, perhaps allowing Wakana to take her exams later or discounting any poor scores she might have gotten due to spending more time with her dying mother. They had influence with these people, why not use that influence. Sure, if Wakana found out about it she would have been angry, but it would have been better than the type of self-accusatory depression she is suffering from now!

I think the key thing is that different people respond to things differently. The reaction that Wakana had to her mother's death, leading up to her withdrawal from the music program and her current depression, is very much in line with the way the character has been presented. Should she be able to handle things better now? Maybe, but it is in line with her character to be struggling with it. Even after her mother died, it doesn't seem that her father told her anything about the reasons he and her mother chose to keep the illness a secret or about her mother's past. She is just now finding out about how her mother really viewed the world and just coming to realize what her mother's desire to write music with her in her final weeks on earth actually signified. That was provided by the letter the Condor Queens gave her, not by her father. The knowledge that her mother's attempts to get her to write music were, essentially, her mother's attempts to show her how much she loved her, even though she still didn't tell her that she was going to die soon, is a perfect storm for a descent into the depths of depression. The fact that she is withdrawing from everything, music, her friends, etc... is a big, giant red flag. Luckily for her, Sawa, Konatsu, and Wien have all recognized it. Now they need to act upon it and come to the rescue!

Sorry about your parents too. Yeah, you have the points. Wakana's situation and mine are not exactly alike. There are surroundings come into effect when people handle sorrows. I'm lucky having good people around, Wakana maybe not. That's when her friends will support her. I just intended to point out that losing loved ones can't end the whole life. The way she act now is annoying to me, but of course, I expect that she will do better soon with her friends.

I teared up during the scene when Wakana was crying after finding about her mother's death :/ A very sad episode.

That was my main problem with this episode. I should have been in floods at the end, but they cut to credits. It takes a lot more to be emotionally invested in Wakana because she's such a detached character. Had they brought her character into sharper focus in the beginning I would have been loving this series.
Detachment is an understandable human response to death of a loved one, but unfortunately, it doesn't make for a great television character.

I was in tears when they cut to the credits. The break/sob in Wakana's voice when she said "I'm sorry... mom..." was heartbreaking. I personally think they developed the character perfectly. They presented the behavior that everyone else saw, the standoffishness, the withdrawal from activities with friends, the reticence to be engaged by friends, and the total refusal to be drawn into anything that involves singing. Then they showed us the why behind all of it. If they had shown the why first, it would have been boring. Instead it intrigued us. Why does Wakana not want to be involved in music? Why is she so insistent? Why is she withdrawing when her friends are obviously trying to get closer to her? Sure, we already knew her mom was dead, but if we knew all the details, there wouldn't have been any reason to tune in next week to find out what makes Wakana tick. If they had shown us all the details at the beginning, there wouldn't have been any dramatic tension.

hmmm.. you do have a point. I confess being intrigued with Wakana since the show began. However, I simultaneously felt irritated with the way this shows loves to side-step major developments of her story.
Perhaps it's because I can't connect the dots as to why although Wakana regrets her behavior towards her mother while she was still alive, she still wants to get rid of her mother's one heirloom. The letter she received last episode was the reason for her to want to get rid of the piano (emotional distancing), yet the letter was also the reason she cries at the end (catharsis). That's 2 separate emotions from the same stimuli and that's what confuses me. And that's where I think the previous episodes could have addressed as to where they were going with in this episode.

Just realized the fifth episode was out instead of next Sunday which is good, but what I saw was the exact opposite.

The beginning being cheerful made me believe this episode would be like all the others, but once Wakana started getting the spotlight again, everything just turned dark and gloomy...however! It was still a nice episode and I'm wondering if Wakana will talk to the bitch teacher about the past though she'll probably be all like, "What? I know nothing, get out of my face," then proceed to be depressed.

Sawa and Taichi...ehh, I didn't really get the feel they liked each other, but this is still pretty much the beginning of the series so there might/should be some more development there in the future; they do look pretty cute together. :D

I think next episode, Konatsu will be THAT character that gets all the information about Wakana's past and gives her a speech about life, family, love and change her mind (edit: OR make her sing a song with her)...but I could be wrong. The preview shows only her running to something (Wakana I'm guessing) so it's pretty possible. Her dad could be involved somehow, but he's always under a heap of work so I doubt it.

Now onto her mom...it sucks such a kind and pretty woman like her had to die! Sure she was a little more then a doormat for Wakana, but she was sick with something so it's understandable she'd do whatever to make her happy, but there was no reason not to talk to Wakana about her attitude. I guess since her dad was absent a lot in the flashback, he was still a huge workaholic and didn't see how she acted? Well, how he is now he was still probably a passive kind of guy.

I liked this episode, and while Wakana was a total assface to her mom, we'll never really understand why unless they tell us next episode. We can guess it was the exams and stress getting to her, and when she wanted help her mom wanted to play music and sing...but that's not too good of a reason because her parents weren't pressuring her to study for anything. Her getting rid of everything doesn't really make any sense either; she's been having all these flashbacks all day but for some reason she's going to rub a handful of salt on the wound?

Well, that's all I have to say, can't wait for the next episode though.

A tense episode, as Wakana begins to crack. I hope that her father found someone who will hold the piano temporarily, in case she changes her mind. In the first episode, I thought Wakana had an interesting relationship with her father. It looks like it's even more complex than I thought.

Sawa is pretty charming. She didn't get much screen time this episode but she made the most of it.

While this episode was a bit of a meat grinder, I think that the creators are doing a fine job telling the story.

But… where's the damn cat?!

I don't really like Wakana that much (she's my least favorite out of the five) but it was a good episode. Not the best episode though.

SHE THREW AWAY HER PIANO! ): Waste of money..

LOL @ Wakana's mom. Nobody plays piano with their hair and bangs whipping back and forth.

Next episode seems dramatic. Looking forward like usual.

That'd be what I'm hoping for too. I hope that her friends would know more about her background and help her to feel better/get over it. It's too depressing right now.

However, I kinda feel like Sawa will be the key character to change Wakana though. Konatsu might worry after she realize about everything, but it must be Sawa who walk up to Wakana and help her (like when she invite her into the club.)

I'm looking forward to the next 8 episodes though ... this series is too short. (However, if Wakana will come back and sing at EP13, maybe this is the right pace so that they aren't stretching the story.

Exactly. I find it amusing that a lot of people call her a "bitch" and being "cold". When she is acting like at least 50% of 12-13 year olds act.

I was not expecting a sad episode like this. It gave out a nice message and the way they transitioned from current events to flashbacks was simply stunning. Great episode.

Very good point! The direction and screen writing in this episode really deserve praise. Many shows would have had one big flash-back, but the story is fed to us bit by bit, with each piece of the puzzle prompted by some current day event that sparks Wakana's memory. The way that the flashbacks drift in and out and forward and back in her past is really well done. They peel back the sources of Wakana's pain layer by layer, until it is left raw and exposed at the end of the episode, ready to burst and potentially destroy her if she doesn't get some help, and soon!

I also loved the way they showed her friends growing concern for her. They all can tell that something is not quite right. (Sawa's teasing of Kontatsu when Konatsu wonders if the problem is, basically, that Wakana doesn't like her, is also precious. Sawa and Konatsu have such a wonderfully crafted relationship! I do wonder if Konatsu's tendancy to feel like she is a bother or annoyance will be fleshed out later in the story, or if it is merely being used for comic relief...)

I'm curious to see what their approach will be with other characters/stories because so far to me at least Wakana is a much more human character in how she goes about living than the others.

So far, they are doing a good job with Taichi, Sawa, and Konatsu. Wien has been a bit less developed, but I expect that to happen soon, now that his "before the show" scene at the beginning has been done. (Interesting that it wasn't childhood, but when he was leaving Austria. I expect the kid he gave the red ranger to is the one he wrote the letter to earlier.)

Taichi's story, in this episode, was handled just as well as Wakana's. I like that he did well, but not too well, in the Nationals. Certainly a top 8 finish is enough to get him a position on a good college team, perhaps a scholorship if things work the same way in Japan as they do here. The way they handled talking about how he got interested in badminton, with him telling Sawa about why he went to this high school, then Konatsu finding out that he started playing because his big sis played. It meshed together to tell a lot about the character. He idolizes his big sister, and she seems to be his sole guardian, which suggests that either their parents are gone or it is one of those absentee parents due to work things. (I also loved the double meaning when Sawa commented: "So that player's the reason you took up badmin?" and Taichi replied "Stop oversimplifying things!" meaning both his reasons for playing and the word itself! Clever wordplay!)

The budding relationship between Sawa and Taichi was also handled well. It is clear that Sawa is starting to "take a shine" to him, to use an archaic phrase. His dedication to his sport and work ethic, I think, are what attracts her. She sees in him, a kindred spirit. Someone with lofty goals, probably unreachable ones, but who is undeterred by the difficult road he must follow. My take, at this point, is that she is not quite so certain about her own ability to do what Taichi is doing and being around him makes her feel that she can be as brave and driven as he is. And he is kinda cute... at least, I assume he is, from a young female point of view... I am much more inclined to comment on the cuteness of Sawa, Konatsu, Wakana, and Sawa's mom/Taichi's sis - those two are knockouts!

The Japanese even have a term for it: Chuunibyou (which translates to 2nd year of middle-school syndrome. There is even an anime about it coming up in October. Chuunibyou dome Koi ga Shitai!)

I would say that Wakana was displaying classic signs of Chuunibyou when she was preparing for her exams, generally treating both of her parents like they were clueless. She still seems to treat her father that way sometimes, but, to be fair, he does seem pretty clueless at times...

Chuunibyou refers to something else - more to do with immature make-believe stuff.
Okabe Rintarou from Steins;Gate is a classic example.

It can also be the "know-it-all" attitude and looking down on adults. The fantasy world is another type. There are also the "pretend delinquent" types. All three are considered Chuunibyou.

If that's the case, the word is not very useful since it describes three completely different things.
Even with the other two definitions, I still think that the fantasy meaning is the most common one.

The key issue is that it is only considered a problem if, like in Okabe's case, it continues well beyond middle school, so Wakana acting like that when she was in middle school would not be considered an issue.

According to this, you're right about the term having multiple definitions and about it not applying to Wakana since she's not an adult:

Incidentally the person who coined the term was upset that it no longer meant what he wanted it to mean.

I think that it is a bit harsh of you guys to call Wakana a bich. This is how I see it. Deep down inside I'm pretty sure Wakana loves her mother very much. She just doesn't show it like one plus one equals two. It's very obvious when she was a little kid, anyone can see that she loves singing along with her mother. As she grew up though, she began to see music as a form of leisure. It's pretty reasonable, especially when you have a mother who is always cheerful and you hardly ever see her serious side. And so she begins to focus more on academics. As she gets older and more into academics, she slowly sees her mother as being carefree or "irresponsible". Like the time when her mother forgets to prepare her raincoat and also the time when her mother collapsed and shrugged it off like it was no big deal. As a result Wakana starts to behave rudely in front of her mother, wishing she would take things more seriously sometimes. Being rude is a way of telling her that she doesn't agree with her mother's attitude. I see this more of worrying for her mother rather than thinking her mother is too childish. As you can see Wakana isn't really a bich, really she is just more or less bad at expressing her feelings. You don't have to agree with what I said, but I just felt like putting something out there.

I'll give you better production values and a better female lead (Ohana compared to Wakana), but in terms of male characters (which HSI's male characters were props to be ridiculed), consistency (seriously HSI had a bunch of really good eps such as the opener, end of Tokyo arc, final arc, but also very really poor eps such as 3, 7, omlette rice drama arc) with the rest being medicore to good. It also has an inferior female side cast (Konatsu, Sawa >> Minko, Nako). Also god forbid, someone strangle nano.ripe's vocalist because it sounds whiny as hell. Airi/ur@n is so much better. The VAs for the girls are also reputably known to be excellent singers, particularly Ayahi who has a college major in music.

So Tari Tari wins by a comfortable lead imo. There has been no bad episodes of Tari Tari and each ep has been as good as each other bar the latest episode 5 which really brought things up a notch since we are finally getting some drama. Non-melodrama mind you, none of that Key or Anohana stuff that I can't stand to watch anymore. And I'm expecting this to continue since being 1-cour restricts the amount of "filler" or "shenanigans" that plagued Hanasaku Iroha middle portions. Can't say that for Iroha, since episode 3 was complete garbage and the episodes following it till the Tokyo Arc was rather average. Still a good series, but could have been quite a bit better. I blame Mari Okada largely since she's been doing this inconsistent script all round wherever she's involved in minus Anohana.

But whatever. This season is pretty good in the slice of life dept with Tari Tari, Hyouka and Kokoro Connect continuing to deliver. I'm particularly pleased with Kyoani since last season, because I was expecting Hyouka to be moeblobbery garbage in the vein of Lucky Star and K-on, but ended up reminding me more of Haruhi, which I still think is Kyoani's crowning jewel alongside FMP.

Well, I realise that the main thematic of this anime is music and singing, but they are trying too hard to overpush it into everything and its starting to get annoying. Its not the answer to every problem, and there are more important things in life than music. If music was the only way Wakana's mother could interract with her daughter, thats just sad. No everyone is obliged to love singing. You cant push your intrests onto your children or friends. This anime is trying to make music the universal solutions to all problems. Well, its not, there is NO such thing, sadly.
Otherwise I like the way relationships are growing among the main characters. Slow and steady. Taichi and Sawa will make an exellent couple, the more they learn about eachother the more they like eachother. So lets hope the anime gets out of its music only thematic, cose it has a lot of potential.

Agreed with this. Music is nice and all but it won't solve the world problems or bless every human with a nice life if that human follows music. Maybe that why Wakana was a little hostile to her mother at that time. Her mother was acting kind of childish and Wakana was at the stage of growing up where you finally realize the defects of others and become a little rebellious trying to find yourself and her mother's way must have been a little annoying at times even if she meant well.

Such sad episode, now I know why Wakana is acting like that, maybe she still has some regrets, her mother just wants to sing with her.. :(

I hope for her to move on soon and have a colorful life once again with music..

This episode was great. I can relate to how Sakai feels being that the last conversation with my father was an argument, and I wish i could meet him again to change that... Sadly that's not going to happen. I didn't know how much he cared untill years after he was gone.

I usually watch it on Crunchyroll. Someone would call that their sub is bad and such, but I feel like it's decent enough. I'm supporting both CR and Fansub though, as they also done a great job.

Here are some 48 hours guest pass, in case any of you want to watch the latest EP on CR: MMGDZU3SUXF R89989PPK4V 8V7B97CABKU

Aaand suddenly drama. I'm glad Sawa and Konatsu were there to ease it up a bit. 4/5.

Edit: The ending should have been omitted. Horribly out of place.

Sakai really don't understand anything. She didn't really show her love to mother, she was simply mean to her while she was still alive...the worse thing is that there was no actual reason(or i missed it?).Tests? examins? are you fking kidding me? you have an amazing mother who wants to teach you music(the biggest treasure of life), and you care of examins?!.Here you have results idiot. You're mother passed and you are full of regrets ._.
I don't understand Sakai, i have a feeling that she's simply stupid.Or is it me and there is actual reason why i should think she is smart?.

Im angry because of Sakai. She threw away most important thing, and after all those years she still don't understand. Some people (me too) can't play music, even if they want like hell for whole life, and she just fking ignored it.

5/5.

Wakana was a brat back then. But I don't really blame her.
She grew to love music because of her mother but somewhere along the way, in her earnest to get into a good high school with an excellent music programme, she was stressed out due to her studies and took out her frustration on her mum. We all have those days.

I think she just closed her heart to music after that because it's the very thing that reminds her of her mom.
How guilty she must have felt every time she looks at the piano. Plus it's not like her mum mentioned her intentions to nurture Wakana directly. How would she have known?

This episode was very well done and I loved it even though it was very sad. I've been wanting to see more of Wakana's problem as she has been my favorite character and had expected it to be very emotional. And this episode didn't disappoint at all. :( Those flashbacks were all so sad to watch, seeing Wakana act like a brat like that and seeing her regret not being able to show her gratitude before it was too late. That last flashback with her mom passing away was just heartbreaking and I cried a little.

Sucks to see her get rid of the piano, the doll, and everything that reminds her of her mom. I can already see her regretting this decision.

Wakana is such a BITCH!

she treated her mother so horribly, even when her mother was already ill and hospitalized. so completely forgoes her final moments with her mother and make music together to study for fucking exams?

to top it all off, she tosses the piano that her mother played, along with the whale charm, essentially destroying all the mementos she had left of her mother

i'm assuming the reason she won't do music at school is because that, too, reminds her of her mother....

the way she just took her mother for granted really makes me glad how my parents are still alive and really makes me appreciate them more

Watching this Wakana girl is really breaking my heart.

... Hmmm... Wasn't too happy with how the badminton match was animated... Makes it look far too easy... Oh wellz, not like it's the main focus of the show.

After watching episode 1 several hours ago, I knew this show is ganna be something... This show is surpassing my expectation ^_^

Wien and Konatsu nearly killed me at the begining of the episode. I didn't recover until the ending so I couldn't follow the sad story of Wakana.
