xxCLouDd said: There needs to be Epilogue Anyone knows if it would happen? Ending kind of sucks but it was good, but sucks at the same time. I feel like the series ended to quick. It's a Kawamori ending... To be expected. The heroes in Macross always disappear. Isamu was the exception of the rule (because he's awesome and because Plus wasn't mean to be a Macross series until they tweaked it). Hikaru, Shin, Basara, all of them vanished after their series conclusion. Alto followed the same pattern from his predecessors. If you want a more conventional happy ending, search it in the official Sheryl Visual Collection (FINAL): |

I thought the movie wrapped things up really nicely, even if it was on the bittersweet side; however, what mattered is that Alto finally made his choice, which is an improvement to the TV series. I'm not gonna lie, I didn't like Ranka in the TV series. It wasn't because I shipped Alto with Sheryl, but because of her character (all of us who've seen more than 1 macross series should know the character foil). This 2nd movie, OMG made me like Ranka so much!! I thought she grew so much compared to the TV series, that I was honestly baffled. Sheryl was still awesome, Alto was still pretty ok in the movies (overall). How I felt for Ranka: TV series: ಠ益ಠ 1st movie:(._.) 2nd movie: CAN I HAZ YOU? xD |

Oh, I didn't say she was anooying in the 1st movie nor that she did anything wrong. In the 1st movie, my opinion of her was still kind of "meh" but that was probably because I kept thinking of her series counterpart. However, I do give her credit in the 1st movie for being much stronger, specially during the ending scene/fight. But, hey, at least my opinion of her changed enough to make me fangirl her in the 2nd movie :D |

I am a certified Ranka X Alto shipper since way the series started. That's why I have to admit, my heart broke into pieces now that it was clearly concluded who Alto truly loves. In the anime and in the 1st movie, it was kind of an open end that's why it kinda brought my hopes up. But after seeing this... it was just shattered. (T_T) But yeah... I kinda knew it in the back of my head that Sheryl will end up with Alto. Somehow, deep inside my heart... it's hard to accept in my standards that Bishounen+ Bishoujo= made for each other/ true love? or maybe I just don't like the fact that Sheryl's appearance is too much of a sexy nee-chan who manipulates guys? When I see them together in some of their flirty moments it makes me think that Alto chose her 'coz she have much bigger boobs and bigger ass though I know it's not entirely the case. Errrr.. Though I think its one of the main reasons. Alto can be a little pervy as we all know. And another thing is with her overly dramatic past that is highly highlighted with this series that includes how she's used to be in the streets, not to mention the illness that's killing her... maybe it also makes me think that Alto chose her because of mere sympathy and just interpreted it as love? Analyzing Alto's thought process, it would most likely be like this: "Ah, I choose Sheryl 'coz her time is limited in this world and she is lonely...on the other hand... Ranka is always in good spirits and she can live even without me" or something like that... and what if Ranka and not Sheryl was the one who end up getting sucked in the space and is thought to be dead?? I think that his choice of girl will probably change if that would be the case. Alto's way of coming up with a decision is petty after all. [Please don't get the wrong idea here... my main target of criticism is Alto and not Sheryl. Just not liking his way of weighing things.] BUT Even with all this corrupting feelings... this show I think still deserves a high mark even if it didn't ended the way I wanted it to (gave it an 8/10). Though I probably will give it a ten if it is a Ranka ending or Alto dies coz it might be more interesting that way. I dunno... maybe I just want to see Sheryl get stronger/ face the future with her own two feet? That's the Sheryl I want to see. But seriously, it was a great movie after all. Especially the songs, the concerts and battle scenes but not all of it.I don't like the part where Sheryl sang Aimo. No offense to May'n but her voice really weren't suited for the song for it erases the melodic-nostalgia that the song is giving. I really wanted to tell her to just let Ranka sing her own song and shut up. Don't always hog the spotlight all to yourself girl... you already have the man. (>o<)// |

Ranka is always in good spirits and she can live even without me" or something like that... He chose Sheryl because he loves her. He even expresses it with Aishiteru (the greatest declaration of love). He wore her earring in the manner Klan wore Michael's glasses when she lost him. It was basically the same scene with Sheryl sucked into space as Michael was in the TV series. I don't understand Ranka/Alto fans, do you really think Alto is that much of a jerk to pick someone 'out of pity'? Please. He didn't even know Sheryl's feelings (she never confessed), he was putting his in jeopardy. Momo-Hime said: and what if Ranka and not Sheryl was the one who end up getting sucked in the space and is thought to be dead?? I think that his choice of girl will probably change if that would be the case. Alto's way of coming up with a decision is petty after all. Ranka was out the picture once. In the tv series where she got the traitor subplot and the farewell. And what happened? Sheryl and Alto made love, lived together as a couple and were lovers until Sheryl told him to quit it while Alto was struggling to confess to Sheryl (according to Yoshino, who not only wrote the script and screenplay, but also convinced Kawamori to leave the 'official' yet plain obvious confession to the movies) during episode 24. Now was Ranka's chance, it was her time to shine and be strong. What happened in the romantic department? Nothing, that's what happened. She couldn't even land a kiss. There's also another factor. In the TV series, the sky ranked before Sheryl. It wasn't Ranka who was a rival for Alto's affection, but his hard on for the sky. The movies 'fix' this by making Sheryl and Alto each other's source of dreams. It is his performance who inspires her to become an idol and it is hers words that make him strive to the sky since a child. It wasn't really a contest or choice. The movies displayed Alto charmed and drawn to one person exclusively romantically, yet he struggled to trust her (with good reasons for both of them). Which he finally did and was resolved in the second movie. While he trusted and cherished a friend who liked him romantically, but he definitely didn't return her feelings and was apologetic for it. Sheryl and Alto were portrayed as destined lovers, with the typical Kawamori's patented true love bittersweet ending (and according to him, the second movie scenario was the closest he had imagined in the original idea for the TV series). The obviousness is in the relationship is evidenced by the first movie book to portray them together: Ranka and Alto (content tables): Sheryl and Alto (cover): Tell me which pair looks like a couple of lovers and which one like a pair of friends? They weren't subtle at all. |

Maybe I was the only one, but I was actually disappointed that the resolved the love triangle. The TV series had an ending open to a threesome, which I frankly found ideal. The only other anime that did that that I know of aired years later. But, meh. It was a step up from the previous movie that pretty much wrote Ranka out of the plot. When they gave Sheryl Ranka's Aimo I raged hard. And who else thought the soundtrack was better in the TV anime? I loved that they included Diamond Crevasse at least, but that nurse skit at the beginning... was just embarrassing. Valkyria (or whatever it's called) and Ranka's last song were sort of sweet too, but they don't hold a candle to Northern Cross, the reboots of Watashi no Kare wa Pilot and Ai Oboete Imasu Ka and the other songs Sheryl and Ranka had. The visuals were fantastic though. I paused a lot in the movie just to stare at the scenery, lol. |

Heeeeeeeeeeey, that's kind of a sad ending ;( but it was definitely a fun movie! I think the characters were cooler, or more tolerable. Especially Alto. Not as snappy, more resolved. Galaxy... - Galaxy crew suffered a terrible fate. Damn ;/ i mean, all of them. All of them! Sheryl's like comatose? Brera got mind-controlled and blew up, Grace got shot and tuning forked (lol), and even Grace's crew got shot the phuck up by Mishima's men. Oh yeah, also the first movie, Vajra killing Galaxy forces. - The concerts were a lot of fun. ;) Sheryl crossdressing..and ALTO! Awesome Maid! - Alto! Why did you do that?! He couldn't get away? I saw folds but Galaxy blew up? o-O - Gore! GORE! - Ozma vs Brera was good too. Sheryl had an episode 20 moment if you know what I mean. - Who the F was Grace conspiring with? Was Galaxy controlled by..computers? Brains? What? o-O Second thought, who was the bad guy again? Both Frontier and Galaxy were trying to dictate the Vajra, but also Grace and Brera? - Alto in a wheelchair, awww. Him getting hit by Vajra blade was a bit scary too. Like "ACK!" - APPLE PLANE! APPLE PLANE! - I wanted to see more VF-29 Durandal. And are the SMS awesome/flexible or what? Sign me up! I wish they'd stop killing the Nightmares (VF) in this movie (x.x) NUNS fodder. Someone help me explain the antagonist's motives. Thank you. I'm forgetful. |

The antagonists wanted to control the Galaxy through the Vajra. The ending was mean to be hopeful. Kawamori suggests us to pay us attention to what Ranka says and the sequence of the credits. They are all about the future. Some revelations: - Sheryl's no longer comatose, she's awaking in the credits (comatose people do not hum songs and smile). She's resting, but the song that takes place after her awakening is a live concert with her and Ranka that should be in the future (Ranka's first live was the one Sheryl attended during the movie, so can't be the past). - Alto folded. Re-watch the scene, the Vajra Queen disappears with him. The blast hits the mountain behind them. Kawamori confirmed this in several interviews. - Grace and Brera were both controlled by the Galaxy higher ups. When they broke the implant control, they tried to help Sheryl and Ranka. For those looking for a truly happy ending: "So we meet again." Since people lack imagination sometimes, they officially released this sketch. |

[troll] Look at all the child molesters upset because Alto decided to date an adult instead of a minor. [/troll] For serious though. I love Ranka. She's cute, and both in love and against the Vajra she was incredibly courageous in the series AND the movie. Love her songs, and Megumi Nakajima did an excellent job voicing her. But she is just outshined so much by Sheryl. And it's not a fair comparison, to be honest. I'm sure at some point Sheryl was much more like Ranka, but as she got older she grew out of that. Not saying Ranka will become like Sheryl, but in two or three years I doubt she'll still be the same girl that oozes cute while singing songs like Seikan Hikkou and Rainbow-Colored Bear. I seriously don't understand what there is to dislike about Sheryl. She's a little capricious, sure, but she's devoted to her work. She loved singing more than she loved life itself--even dying and in prison, she wrote songs in her own BLOOD. Dude, fuck your opinion on her songs--that's dedication, and for most people, it's more dedication to something than you'll ever give to a single thing in your entire life. You HAVE to respect it. And she loved Alto. She fell for him--hard--she just wasn't the type of character to let a guy she liked become the center of her universe and exclude EVERYTHING else. I can't entirely describe why I love Sheryl so much, but whatever it is--it makes her leaps and bounds better than most female protagonists. Though if you ask if I'm happy about Alto/Sheryl...I am, in that she wanted him and I'm glad this character I like became happy. But I don't really like Alto as a character. There's more definition to him in both films, but he gets completely owned by Ozma in BOTH films, who's a side character but is just superior in terms of coolness and motivation. Alto needs Sheryl AND Ranka to motivate him to do stuff, otherwise he just lies around like a wet noodle. TBH, if Sheryl had lost, most likely I'd still be okay with it because it meant that she could find a decent guy instead of being stuck with Alto. Anyways, loved this movie, aside from when the film trolled me into thinking Sheryl and Ozma were dead. |

Alto did indeed fold; it took me three times to watch that scene just to see it but yes, if you watch closely enough, he does fold and escape. However, if he'll ever return to Sheryl's side might be another story. I don't believe Alto's dead but at the same time, I don't think there's a high chance of him returning anytime soon. Why are people thinking or saying Sheryl is dead? People really should watch the ending credits ALL THE WAY THROUGH! (I'm starting to think a lot of people stopped watching right after Alto told Sheryl he loved her...they just cut it off right there...) All in all, both Ranka and Sheryl were great in this movie! I loved both of them; and I adored how brave Sheryl was to save Ranka's life, nearly sacrificing her own, knowing Alto wouldn't be able to grab ahold of them in time (it was my favorite scene and nearly brought me to tears). Both of their songs seemed to hold a great deal of emotion and power as well. And people, please stop fighting over that Alto claimed his feelings for Sheryl instead of Ranka (I don't think he would have chose Ranka even if Sheryl had died). It's done and over with, yet people still have to bash on others for their opinions or who they liked more and suddenly a rude debate is breaking out (I swear some of you are going to start throwing things from the way you argue and bicker). GET OVER IT. Again, I think both Ranka and Sheryl were great, they both have their strong points and their weak points - that's what makes them who they are. They're not perfect but I doubt anyone ever is. |

@Yumekichi11: I believe Ranka was 16, Alto was 17-18, and Sheryl was 17 (there should be one or two sites where you can look it up if you want to double check). So Alto really wasn't that much older than Ranka; I wish people would stop calling him a pedifile because that's not the case at all. |

The legal age is 17. Alto already chose Sheryl. When/if he comes back (as the official images released like the hospital reunion and wedding one hints), he comes back to her. Ranka even hinted it in words. Ranka would find someone else one day and be an adorable maid of honor in their hypothetical wedding (if you take a look at the 'dual' wedding gowns released a while ago, it seems Ranka's more a bridesmaid styled and Sheryl's got the bride one). Did you also take notice of the kanji subtitle of the movie? マクロスF 恋離飛翼 ~サヨナラノツバサ~ The last part is "The Wings of Farewell". But the full Japanese subtitle: Macross Frontier ~the wings of love's separation. This phrase also derives from "Marital vows" and the idea of "Two as one" according to Kawamori. It reminds me to the character concept for Alto and Sheryl from the first movie official book: Speaking about that movie, The False Diva subtitle double play was "虚空歌姫" The Empty Songtress (a diva who feels lonely/is empty/hollow/needs to fill the void). The first movie subtitle was a smooth continuation into the second one. Pretty sneaky. |

Kawamori has concluded Frontier. The second movie was mean to be the grand finale. If you squint and pretend Alto never returned, Ranka and Sheryl are happily singing together in the end (Kawamori certainly prefers their 'bond' over anything to do with Alto). In the Kiss in the Galaxy manga, Brera survives and Ranka seemly marries him? (shoujo wincest take). Sheryl and Brera have always appealed as matches for Ranka among her Japanese fanbase... So he did exactly what most of her fans wanted. There's the 30th Anniversary Project of Macross he's focusing on. So no more Frontier, unfortunately. GET OVER IT. Again, I think both Ranka and Sheryl were great, they both have their strong points and their weak points - that's what makes them who they are. They're not perfect but I doubt anyone ever is. Totally agree with you! :D also with that scene. GAHH! i knew she will do that, but I was still shocked. or should I say, I was really touched that I totally and literally didn't move for a second after that. :DD |

He's going to be fine, wherever he is. Kawamori revealed he can communicate with the Vajra now and the Queen would keep him safe and sound (he said he used the scene with Ai-kun, Sheryl and Ozma to give people a clue that the Vajra would protect humans from space and transported them to safe places). He even joked the Vajra Queen was a new romantic suitor for Alto. |

Why the heck are people arguing over their ages?! This is an anime, I don't think age really matters (if you want to gripe about ages, go watch Shugo Chara). Stop throwing pointless things around just because you are angry about the ending. It wouldn't have mattered if Sheryl was 16 and Ranka was 17; Alto still would have picked Sheryl. He didn't pick her because of her age--get over it. Why do Ranka fans think they have to bash on this whole movie and Sheryl just because Sheryl won? I think many could see this ending of Alto choosing Sheryl over Ranka by episode 4 of the series. Both Ranka and Sheryl are great characters and both deserve a happy ending of their own whether it was with or without Alto. In the end, Ranka seems pretty content with the choice Alto made and has accepted it. This movie earns higher ratings in my book over the first movie. Everything was put together so wonderfully and I couldn't stop watching. I loved the ending credits when you heard both Sheryl and Ranka singing (proving Sheryl had indeed woken up). Alto might return someday but I don't know if I would hold my breath. |

5/10'd. Feel cheated. Can I have my time back, please? Here's what I managed to fit into my list tag, after much suffering: "ALL THAT, for Alto to vanish mid-confession? No AltoxSheryl time, and she knowingly betrayed humanity!? No backstory added. Still NO CLUE what was with Galaxy. Full of deus ex machina. The end was e25's clusterfuck extended. 'Surfing' & prison band = NO!" The first movie was great. The new music/performances, the Alto-Sheryl action sequence alteration and the added emphasis taken away from the moe blob pleased me. And it cut-off before the pointless/fillerish content from the TV series; skipping from around e7 to an alternate version of the bug invasion Mic died during. The second film was set-up in a way that suggested questions would be answered AND the love triangle would FINALLY GET FUCKING RESOLVED. Sheryl even had her early bitchiness replaced with guts & caring. ...And what did this piece of shit finale to MF deliver? Sod all is the answer. Nothing outside of a cheesy as fuck 'I SAW YOU AS A TWEEN; IT'S DESTINY!' backstory scene was added. In fact, next to nothing from the TV version even got shown; meaning Sheryl's past that made people sympathic largely went bye-bye. And as for Grace and Galaxy, the writers clearly didn't know what they were doing to the point they made Grace go from 'I'M AN EVIL, PLANET-DESTROYING CYBORG; NOT A NICE MANAGER!' to 'I WAS MANIPULATED; I ACTUALLY LIKE PEOPLE... OR SOMETHING!" We still got to see practically nothing of Galaxy. A few dead old men + people with implants/cyborgs make up Galaxy in its entirity? We planned a conspiracy using Frontier... even though we could've just used the Galaxy fleet instead?... I DON'T FUCKING GET IT! And you know what? I don't think any of the writers did, either. Evil people want to rule the glaxy, via a new energy source + bugs >>> END BATTLE!... That's what I got. Also, what the hell was with everyone other than Mishima evading death SOMEHOW? WHAT WAS EVEN THE POINT OF MIC SURVIVING WHEN HE DIDN'T GET IT ON WITH HIS GIANT-LOLI!? Fuck you, writers. Just fuck off. The best part of the 'deaths' was how no-one cared. Ranka was more concerned about confessing her love, blushing, after she thought her brother and Sheryl had died. It was as if those behind the scripts neglected to show sadness because it was SO FUCKING OBVIOUS they'd come back to life shortly. Fuvking bullshit. Ranka sang lots of crappy new songs. Sheryl went to prison (make her nicer to win over her haters, then reveal she was aware bugs followed her voice--that was smart!). Alto caught Ranka's emoness over hurting the cute bugs that had killed humans. Then, he fucked off with the alien queen. You know what sucks arse the most about this shitfest? I was more pleased with lead-up to the TV version's AWFUL final episode than the grand conclusion to MF. Why? Because - even though it was kept up in the air, and Alto even hinted that he loved Ranka more - Atlo and Sheryl kissed + screwed before it ended (the novel detailed this, clearing it up, according to the internet). The two even got to play house. And the Mic + Klan stuff was funny and touching. THIS PIECE OF ARSE HAD NONE OF THAT! ............................ |

The story was kind of a mess and I wasn't feeling the new songs at all. First movie wasn't perfect but it was way more enjoyable than this. |

While I'm really glad they actually resolved the triangle with this ending, that's pretty much all I liked more. The movie was building it up to be an Alto/Sheryl ending anyhow, unlike the show which seemed to rock back and forth (but seemingly slightly in Ranka's favor). The overall story was a mess (Grace is a good guy now?) compared to the show. But that's just generally how I feel about movie reiterations of shows. I far prefer the original Macross to Do You Remember Love (although DYRL does make me actually like Minmay). All in all, I enjoyed it because I love Macross but I liked the show more. I mean when they put that big triangle on the roof of the hospital and Sheryl and Ranka were on either side while Alto was in the middle it was like really? You're really going to do that? |

Ranka at the end is devastated and insecure, while Sheryl glances at Alto without any dark shadow. She even 'challenges' Sheryl which can only happen from people in a lesser position. The scriptwriter even said Alto was trying to confess to Sheryl in episode 24... The only obstacle (aside of his dense nature)? The sky... Not Ranka. The movie tweaked things to make Sheryl surpass the sky as Alto's primary love interest. It was even more lopsided when you realize Alto and Sheryl were lovers (until Sheryl, thinking she wouldn't survive the battle, ended it against Alto's protests) and all Ranka got was a scripted kiss. |

The two movies were excellent; I loved them. I liked the changes to the story, since I thought the story in the TV series was a bit too convoluted for its own good. But what I liked the most were the changes to the characters, mainly to Alto and Ranka. Alto finally had some true character development; in the TV series, it felt as if he didn't ever find a true reason to fight, remaining indecisive all the way to the end. Not anymore. He was total badass in the end, clearly knowing what he wanted to do. Ranka also benefited a lot from the changes. From a damsel in distress in the TV series, to a strong, badass idol who risks her life to save her friends and technically the world? I didn't like her TV counterpart much, but now...damn, I think this here explains my thoughts exactly: c0de_da1sy said: lol XDHow I felt for Ranka: TV series: ಠ益ಠ 1st movie:(._.) 2nd movie: CAN I HAZ YOU? xD Ranka has now grown into a strong young lady who cares a lot for her best friends. She wasn't chosen by Alto, but she's clearly stronger than her TV counterpart in the end. She has turned out to be one of my favorite characters. Sheryl didn't get that many changes, although maybe because she was the best developed character in the TV series, so she didn't need as much help as the other two leads. The biggest difference was that Ranka was the one who cheered her up when she was feeling down, instead of Alto in the TV series, a change that I liked a lot better, because it also helped round-up Ranka's character development. A nice move from the director's part. All in all, a great ending to the Frontier saga. I'll be looking forward to the next Macross series. :) PS. I didn't want to enter the shipping wars but I can hardly overlook the comments about Ranka being better because she has "better DNA". Hearing this, I kinda feel sorry for Ranka. If a guy chose me because my "DNA was better than the other girls", I would feel disgusted. Ranka has a ton of better qualities to think of other than her DNA...especially in the movies, where she matures into a lovely, strong young woman. Why do I get the feeling that I appreciate Ranka more than some of her fans, even though I still prefer Alto and Sheryl as a couple? |

Most important fact: Michael is alive, just as Klan Klan is! Anyhow, this movie is definitely stronger than the movie and it the tv series is officially screwed now (except for the songs), but it's still a lot going on if you didn't see other Macross stuff. Guess I need to watch the other Macross stuff. Well, loved it anyway! I am glad to see that it was different from the series! =D |

Wow the fight scenes was epic, especially the Quarter surfing. Still mixed feelings about the end, although i like AltoxSheryl but one went MIA and another in a coma (about to wake up?). But still this movie was epic and i cried so 10/10 |

Honestly I liked the TV version better overall including the ending. Although Alto didn't choose between Ranka or Sheryl but it wrapped up the series quite nicely. It was scripted better and people like Klan and Mikhail weren't regulated as background mob characters.l It just didn't sit well with me that they made Alto disappear for no real apparent reason besides staying in line with the Macross formula. To me it's an open and endless question "what happened to Alto?" you just don't know. That bothers me much more than who did he choose b/c it was one or the other. I was totally fine with Alto choosing Sheryl, but they decided to go for an emotional ending w/ the Alto MIA thing. You can't deny it would have been better if he didn't disappear after confessing. Apparently from this thread the director said Alto does come back and released a picture but meh that pic is more of a "here you go now shut up" and doesn't explain anything of Alto's return. They could have did it in a subtle way like with Shery waking up in the credits. |

What the fuck... just like Macross Frontier the series. Superb music, superb battle scenes, very good animation, Sheryl, Valkyries, nice romance and... a horrible ending. Out with it, I'm not eating any Macross for a while. I scored the movie overall though (7.5). If not for the ending, it would've received a 9 from me. |

Probably don't have anything new to add after ten pages but after finally having watched the TV and later on the movie versions, I feel atleast somewhat satisfied. Must say however that Im not a big fan of these adaptions that feel more like an retelling of the TV series (ex. Shakugan no Shana: The Movie) There's certainly a point by doing an adaption like this but Im just stating my own oppinion. I didn't have a problem with the ending since it's hard to make something that fits everybody and leaving it open sometimes work for the better and by leaving it to the audicence to make their own conclusion to what happened afterwards. Atleast the love part was solved (No surprise there) If they had left that part out it would probably been the only thing wrong about the series (atleast for me) Good series alltogether! Would't mind an short continuation based on the wedding poster, but that would just be a plus. Intresting to see how the new series unfolds! |
