A very moving and well written story, but I expected the ending, and it was just.

I thought Yuu was a little too idealized/romanticized. The story was still quite sad, though.

...although that might have been partially because I was listening to sad piano music while reading.

This was one of the saddest, but most beautiful, mangas I have ever read - the whole way through I knew what was coming, and yet I was still devastated when it happened.

I think it may be the first time a manga has ever made me cry.

I was wondering why no one mentioned Ms. Mutou's mom. If anyone deserved what was coming to them, it'd be her. I wish she would've got in trouble for ignoring what her daughter was trying to tell her. That was my only problem with this story. All in all, it was beautiful.

Simply stunning. At first I thought it would be some unrelatable melodramatic garbage, but I was quite wrong. Although a few aspects just felt too unrealistic for me, such as the Warden, he was way too nice of a guy to be in a profession such as that. And some of the dialogue felt a little awkward, so I guess the translation wasn't perfect.

All in all though, I'd be lying if I didn't admit that it almost made me cry. Simply a must read title.

You've pretty much summed up my feelings about this manga in one post. Although, I'd like to add that even though the ending was fairly obvious, knowing didn't soften the blow.

It was breathtaking in all aspects.

I knew the ending was going to be tearful hence I wasn't able to rate it a full 10.
But this just blew my mind.

I was listening to the Imogen Heap Soundtrack while reading, and it fit so well. At the last chapter I played "The Moment I Said It" by Imogen Heap, and it made me cry my eyes out. The song contains melancholy piano, with a slight hint of hope in it, it's just perfect this series.

So I'm done with the movie and the manga, but sadly I haven't read the novel since it's not available here in my country.

I just need to ask, is this what the novel contains? Or is it the movie's story?

I'd be lying if I said I didn't shed a tear for this. But one of the reasons why I cried was because I've already seen the korean movie (countless times) and I'm not sure if I should give too much credit for this manga on reminding me how great the movie was.

While I didn't mind a few different details, I think the characterizations were a bit different, thus giving me the feeling that I was reading a different story. If I didn't see the movie first, I probably won't cry over this. I'll still give this 9/10 because I think it's beautiful, though I don't think it could match the beauty of the movie. And I think my opinion is a little bias hehe.

The ending was quite touching, but I don't think the manga in it's entirety is more than an 8/10.
Some chapters, specially whenever they aren't exploring the characters, are pretty average. For longer stories with more developing time this is forgivable, but for a short one that basis itself on emotion and engagement it's specially noticeable, and a little too slow for moments. The attachement also suffered a little for being so short, and while the ending is emotional, I feel the ending chapter (and specially the piano scene) should've been more worked on. It went a little too fast and didn't give me time to be emotional about it instead on about his "end" itself.
Oh, and the character knowing the girl was a little too coincidential. Takes away from the realism part that was important to the story. Could've worked better without it.

This manga's got me hooked since the very first chapter (tho there are only 8 xD).
It's great. Not just because I cried (and that wasn't because of an unhappy love story), this story shook me.
Story isn't original. Ending isn't original, in fact, it was too romanticized. Kinda like a light at the end of the tunnel that would blind you instead of giving you a new hope.
But when I was rating this, I was rating straight from the heart.

Splendid. Heartberaking. Beautifully done. What else can I say? I was hoping it won't turn into a happy ending. This kind of bittersweet ending with rays of hope coming out of sad moments simply touches me.

I started this manga with no expectations at all, and 90 minutes later I was overwhelmed by it all. It had so much feeling, character and story packed into a single volume. The ending was expected, though it probably would've hurt the overall feel of the manga if it was done differently.

A powerful piece of art that everyone should experience.

While reading the last three chapters, I just can't hold back the tears~I knew what was going to happen. I just knew it. But I just can't find it in my heart to accept it 'coz its too cruel for the guy who have just found his reason to live..

But though the ending was really sad, I'm still quite satisfied with it 'coz I knew that the guy died happy in a way (when he heard Mutou's piano playing before he's about to be executed). For the girls's part, it turned out to be also good, as she finally found her strength to live, and by that she was able to forgive.

I had already been crying during most of the previous chapters but that ending just killed me. I'm just really glad they got to see each other one last time and that he was able to hear her piano one last time.
Absolutely love this manga.

I think it really deserves its position as #1 in MAL.

Though the ending was quite predictable, I somehow wished for Yuu to be pardoned or anything like that. (=_=)

Perfect ending anyways. :)

That was beautiful. A lot of memorable quotes in these 8 chapters (though I would imagine they stem from the original novel).

Of course, everything that happened was quite predictable, but the way it was presented was just overwhelming.

Whoa, everyone is so...sentimental.

I can't say i was really touched by the story, not that kind of drama i like.
(mostly i was interested only because wanted to see what the hell i this thing that threw Berserk away from #1 place)
Bu-u-t the good side i want to mention, this manga teaches a very good lesson about don't judjing person by the look, status and what others says about this person.
I'll give it 7 or 6/10. It has a good sides but not enough for being called masterpiece, really.
