I must say im dissipointed in ova adaptation it was awesome until ep 5,ending is completely different than mangas arc ending and roberta lost like an arm, eye, leg 2 or 3 fingers in ova i was like wtf O.O

and I dont understand the ending is that like her family or something,is she leaving the mansion or what ???? ova is confusing -_-

"One must die and one must live. No victory, no defeat. The survivor will carry on the fight. It is our destiny... The one who survives will inherit the title of Boss. And the one who inherits the title of Boss will face an existence of endless battle."

That was incredibly different from the manga! Good GOD Roberta got fucked up so badly here! In the manga she didn't get injured at all!

And yet here, she lost her right eye, right leg, left arm, and the index and middle fingers of her right hand!

The conversations between Eda and her CIA boss, Rock and Revy, and Rock and Dutch at the end are absent from the manga. Unfortunately, the manga's conversation between Rock and Mr. Chang is missing.

(The people at the ending are the family of the Japanese man Roberta killed years ago, the man she kept on hallucinating. Apparently Major Caxton went to find them and brought them to the Lovelace household.)

In the manga, there are something like 5 chapters after Roberta's arc, not much actually.

Anyway, is it a normal reaction to feel extremely depressed after watching this 5th OAV ?
Dammit, the ending was a big surprised ( what is a good thing ) since we all expected it to follow the manga but god, I didn't expect something so hard and sinister. It's even worse than the part with the 'vampire' twins or the yakuza girl. Very realistic, yeah, but oh so depressing. -_-

edit1:
nice. finally, a peek at Revy's past. I loved how Roberta looks more physically damaged here than in the manga, makes her less superhuman/overpowered. But i didn't really gave a rat's ass about neither maids, it was the most boring arc after all. But now that it's over--(the hell, it took a whole year)--, hopefully the manga resumes soon.

edit2:

i couldn't stop rewatching black lagoon over and over; it's just so enjoyable. hmm, Rock's descent. I wonder for how long he would until Revy kills him herself ♥ .

Having said that, I thought the episode was alright. Im glad Rock got the ass-kicking he deserved.

Interesting to see a glimmer of Revy's childhood, especially the pillow + gun to the face scene, wasn't that in the first seasons OP?

Roberta was definitely had beast-mode turnt up to the max, definitely made the jungle scenes thrilling and fun to watch.

I still didnt quite understand what Rock was planning against Chang, but it sort of leaves things open for another season or OVA...

4/5

Time to pick up the manga from here. This must have been the easiest transition since i figured out how far the adaption was in a second. (up to 76).

I thought roberta was badass, although Rock's utter failure apparently at the end there was disheartening. He seemed so into it and then in the last minute his plan gets shot down.

its an on-going theme of the series....you try your best to "change" things, but no matter what, things will always be the same

rock DID win at the end, but he failed in realizing that it would only make a minimal difference in the world

such a great series ! it was nice to see a bit of revy's past finally on screen. really does help for understanding why she is the way she is. it's sad to say goodbye to this anime :(

I'm surprised, honestly. After four good episodes, I had thought that the conclusive one would be even better, and... I feel bad about this, but I have to say that this episode was a major let-down. After the half-assed ending I'm not even sure how I should rate the whole series. It's 2/5 for this episode and 7/10 for the whole OVA - though I'd more than gladly give it a 9, but the fifth episode was terrible. Pity.

They did not change the ending of her arc at all. The extra pages where she is shown in wheelchair weren't in the monthly chapters but added when the volume was released. Which is the reason they aren't in the scanlations.

I give this episode 4/5. Not bad, but a dropoff compared to the first four episodes (which I'd unhesitatingly give a 5/5). The direction wasn't as tight, it was sometimes hard to follow the dialogue (a failing of the manga that the OVA had avoided until now), and for a series that usually avoids dialogue that sounds unrealistic, parts of the climax had me saying, "Nobody talks like that." Most disappointingly, whereas I liked nearly all the changes made to the manga in earlier episodes, this episode made changes that I didn't like (the conversation between Rock and Fabiola at the end was shortened, the conversation with Chang was removed entirely, and lines that were crucial in resolving the soldiers' arc were removed).

Edit: SentiNel, thanks for the response. I finally found and watched the fifth episode. The differences between the OVA and the manga (which I read when it came out) made a huge difference in my impression. The OVA changed dialogue and added new scenes with Revy apparently for the purpose of making Rock look worse.

Wow! she even lost her left arm? I didn't notice where exactly that got so much damage.
So sad seeing Roberta like that in the end. Who were those people anyway.
Her face looked so peaceful and young though.

She really kicked ass with that old weapon and the silver poles.

Lol Rock was playing the megalomaniac and got pawned by the bigger heads in the end.

Liked the clips about Revy's past. She looked awesome as a teenager too.

Was that guy raping her some stepfather or something? Or was it just a cop?
We need a full ac about Revy's past and what lead in her becoming what she is.

Just to clarify, it is true that there were extra pages in the tankobon release of volume 9 of the manga that weren't in the magazine, but they didn't show Roberta in that pitiful state (at least she looked pretty unharmed to me).

Here is what I'm talking about:

Anyway, I pretty much liked the way the producers animated this arc, and although they had to remove some scenes, they weren't crucial to the story. The only thing I found disappointing was the fact that they literally butchered Roberta at the end. I understand that they wanted to make Roberta seem less indestructible than in the manga and show us that even she can take damage, but I think they went too far.

I don't recall the scenes from Revy's past occuring in the manga, I'll have to go back and read the chapters again. Overall I have to say that Rock was too out of character for me to enjoy and Roberta never was a character I really liked. Took time away that could have been more properly focused on Revy anyway.

I was hoping for some action concerning the Black Lagoon Company, but I guess it wouldn't be so much about Roberta's Blood Trail.

Either way, it was an awesome end.

Too be honest, I really enjoyed the OAV ending, much more than the manga's for several reasons :

- It gave more credit to the Grey Fox ( and by extension to Balalaika's soldiers since they could keep up with them )
Even if Roberta was such an exceptional fighter, the Grey Fox were a special military unit, it didn't make much sense to have them defeated that easily in the manga by one single woman.

- I still think that they went too far in butchering Roberta but it was more « Black Lagoon-like », you know... plenty of action with a sudden depressing ending like with the twins and the yakuza girl.

- And more importantly the OVA ending set things straight between Rock and Revy.
I don't know what was possessing Rock all along but he spent the arc playing the bad boy, playing people, bullying kids and everything just worked out fine for him in the manga with him not even realizing how lucky he had been ( I mean who knows what Balalaika 'd have done to the Grey Fox if Caxton hadn't won her respect, for example ).

Revy was too much passive in front of Rock for my taste ( the scene with Rock laying in her own bed like some badass dandy while she was staring down in the shower was just horrible ). It suddenly was like Revy was Rock's underlying, her leg had been sliced open in the Japan's arc and now she got shot twice for the sake of Rock's plan ? WTH ?! It was the right thing to do to support Rock in front of Fabiola, since she was just an outsider, but Revy actually never brought Rock back to Earth in the manga. I completely enjoyed that in the OVA, Revy finally woke up from her daze to give Rock a lesson and somehow reminded him that she was his guide in Roanapura and not the other way around.

Overall with all the OVA's it was really good. I actually didn't mind this episode. I did find it a bit confusing at times because I couldn't really remember what had happened in some of the earlier OVA's.

Anyways, I hope they get started on the english dub right away. It adds so much more to the show hearing the english voices.

It was a pretty good episode, but I didn't enjoy seeing Roberta in that state. It was shocking to me. The whole ending was a bit depressing. In other episodes, she was like a machine, now she was butchered; which sucks, because I was hoping to see roberta fight again if the story continues, because eventhough she is a bit crazy, she is badass. I didn't really know who that familiy was until I read the comments. I thought it was her familiy, but now I remember. Rock was so boring in this episode. All he does is talk and come up with plans on the boat will everyone else gets their ass kick. When is he going to do some fighting? Also. It did help to see some of Revy's past. At first I thought she was just cold hearted. Now, I see why she is the way she is.

Good ending? In my Black Lagoon? Yeah, Roberta godmode SUDDENLY ceased to work and she lost her limbs, but I expect something like the vampire twins ending (like, Roberta completely lost sense and shoot Garcia and then was shot by Fabiola).

I don't understand how Mr. Chang and Balalaika's faction fits into this. I get it has something to do with the opium trade but are they trying to help the CIA take out the opium plantation or Roberta?I mean it was actually Roberta who wiped out the poppy plantation. I find it hard to believe the CIA helped the recovery of Roberta at the end since she killed so many of their men.

And what is Rock betting on? I didn't get his grand plan. I mean, the situation doesn't seem any better off for him or his crew in terms of his standing with Mr. Chang and Balalaika, shit, Revy even got shot twice because of his stupid plan.

And Garcia! If he would have had the balls to hug Roberta the first time they met it would have saved a lot of needless slaughtering, not to mention a leg, an arm, an eye, and a few fingers of Roberta's. If he was the "golden key" they should have focused on having Roberta and Garcia meet as their priority. The battle that ensued at the poppy fields was pointless.

heh... I guess it makes for good Rambo style action. But I think I'd would have liked it better if there was more clarity on various issues.

Pretty disappointing end to an otherwise amazing OVA.

The jungle scenes were pure win, as was the glimpse of Revy's past... but things were so vague as to what actually happened to the big picture. Rock's plan to basically destroy Roanpur by cutting out its drug trade were foiled because of... what, exactly? The only thing I can think of is the CIA and Eda did something-something-magic that was never really explained. Then again, I haven't rewatched any of them since release, so I might be missing something.

I've never read the manga, but I definitely felt that Chang needed to have a presence here, since he was apparently such an instrumental player in all this.

As for Roberta... I'm glad she ended up butchered, in a way. She's played out, imo. She can't top what she did in the OVA... so any future appearance of her would seem somewhat lame, in comparison. That, or she'd end up dying for dramatic effect, which would also seem off, given what she went through in the first 4 eps (everything) and in the main series (everything else). Then again, Revy>Roberta... so maybe it's my personal bias.

Pissed she had the maid outfit on and not her commando garb this time. Expected Rock to have a monumental breakdown when he realized his plan failed, given how much effort and evil-face he put into it.

Also, really wish Fabiola died...or Garcia... or some tragedy... IT DOESN'T FEEL RIGHT!

8/10 OVA, 3/5 ep.

I really need to watch more anime as great as Black Lagoon. Over the top action, with well executed serious moments. I was actually expecting the complete butchering of the Lovelace gang, probably topped by Roberta committing suicide, but this was much better, glad her IDDQD was turned off. I would actually go as far as say that this was a happy end. Still wonder where Rock will end up. He almost fell over to the dark side, but his failure held him back. For now.

I could imagine him dying at the end of Black Lagoon for making the morally right decision at a crucial point. Although one in which he ends up Chang #2 and Revy kills him would have great impact as well.

Anyway, 5/5 for the ep, I really enjoyed it. 10/10 for the OVAs as a whole, it delivered what I expected from Black Lagoon and even more.

some people here are overreacting over Rock's character change, what? do you want them to stay the same like puppets or what? its nice to see characters grow and change, especially after OVA 4 and 5, he had to start thinking differently.
in the ending scene i was expecting Roberta to be blown up with along with Garcia :P
or shot by Chang's men

and if they will decide to bright her back im pretty sure she will still be a badass, i can already imagine her with a machine gun left hand, and an eye patch

Damn you Madhouse!!! They did it again. They already ruined Claymore by making a crappy anime ending now they ruined Black Lagoon by butchering Roberta for petty reasons. She's not even missing an arm in the manga... *facepalm

I think Madhouse is trying to tell us that there won't be a Black Lagoon season 2 or OVAs in the future...
