Hey there everyone. This thread is here to suggest some of the fine anime out there that you think EVERYONE has to see at some point, that does not mean all your favorites more talking about classics here.

So what does everyone think?

I will add mine in later.

My personal recommendations for anyone who likes anime or wants to get in to it are quite obvious but classics non the less.

Cowboy Bebop - Arguably the best directed anime series i've seen to date.

Akira - Whether you agree or not it's regarded as one of the greatest aninmated movies of all time.

GiTS - The original movie, so inspirational to modern science fiction films and is a cracking film.

Wolf's Rain - Not sure if everyone rates this as highly as i do. I loved it i though it was a great series that kept it's audience intrigued and interested. It was a very unusual subject matter which is unique to that series alone and not many anime series can say that.

Neon Genesis Evangellion - Despite what many think i'd only suggest the series. Amazing orchestrated peice that deals with human emotions when set great tasks and burdens. Forget any cliches you've heard about the series as it is a remarkable peice of writing.

Howl's Moving Castle - Everyone seems to choose Mononoke as the ghibli peice to choose, whilst it is a masterpeice, this is my favourite. A great family film with lovable characters and a charming story. Miyazaki is a legend.

Honourable mentions: Full Metal Alchemist (read the manga), Samurai Champloo, Most Ghibli, Death Note.

I would defiantly have to agree with you on the Cowboy Bebop front, its an anime everyone HAS to watch.

Full Metal Panic (All of them): All round fantastic anime, and TSR only gets better. There is also Fumoffu is one of the funniest anime's I have seen EVER!

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: I think I like my comedy anime a bit, this is a must watch for anyone interested it the random and strange (its not all that strange to be fair). Also cant wait for the next season.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Last but by no meas least there is FMA! An amazing anime if I have ever seen one, fantastic story and some of the best characters out there! What more do you want?

Full Metal Alchemist - Great story, great characters, consistently good series with very little filler fluff, pretty much a shonen show but without the failings of other Shonen shows, yet manages to pack of light hearted and feel-good stuff in there.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Love it or hate it, this is one of THE must watch series, guaranteed to provoke a reaction, its not the perfect anime some fanboys claim it to be, its not the trainwreck its critics would claim, however it IS what most anime shows in the late 90's early 00's aspired to be.

NANA One of the best Slice of Life shows ive seen, and one of the best Shojo, great characters, all of whom behave very humanly, a very believable and gripping storyline and the best anime soundtrack ive ever heard.

Elfen Lied Like Evangelion, this is one of those series that rarely fails to provoke a strong reaction, either in favour or against it. Brutally violent yet at the same time portraying a fragility in its characters that draws you to them despite its graphic content.

Azumanga Daioh Representing 'comedy' in anime, you don't get much funnier and heatwarming then AzuDai, its not as great as the fanboys claim it to be but its still a VERY solid show and worthy of anyones time to watch.

Princess Mononoke Probably the strongest Ghibli film (I keep changing my mind between this and Spirited Away, beautifully animated, very voice acted and with superb storyline and action.

My list would be.... well there's not much change from what's been previously mentioned....

Akira: Being an older watcher of anime, this was my first when it was first shown on uk tv (channel 4 iirc, divided into 2 parts, and dubbed, not sure on exact date, but early 90's I think), and it blew me away.

Cowboy Bebop: Awesome, everything about it is awesome, from it's music to it's stories to it's characters.

Ghost in the Shell: It's "pure" sci-fi, and i love it. The second one is especially pretty.

Pick a Ghibli: For me it's Howl's Moving Castle, but anything I've seen by them has been great. My mother (yup that's right) even has seen them, she recorded them (on the insistence of my brother) when film 4 showed them the other year, and loved them. Can't really say higher than that....

Mushishi: I love this. It's so different: charming, magical, touching and often sad. It doesn't operate at the same intensity as other anime, and the change of pace is welcome.

As I've only just got back into watching anime (my brother did this to me this time), so this list is from what I've currently seen.
