Poor, poor Asuta...if anyone ever needed pity, this young man certainly does! Seriously...think about how you'd feel if you were a high school boy with only one really close male friend, and suddenly that friend became a gorgeous young lady, leaving you as the only boy left in your entire circle of friends? Always the groomsman, never the groom--that's Soro Asuta. There was a time he could really confide in his buddy Hazumu, but he is human after all, and a little bit of fantasy is normal in the life of a high school boy. Problem is, his fantasies usually result in Tomari kicking to crap out of him, whether he meant to peek or make whatever offhanded comment, or if it was a accident.
The worst part of it is, Asuta's actually a decent catch, though he's constantly being viewed by Tomari and Ayuki as a pervert. Hazumu only makes it worse by initially treating him the same way he always had, with comments like, "Sure, I have breasts now, wanna see?" or, "Sorry I asked you about love and relationships Asuta, I'm sure you're not into that stuff." Yasuna never regards Asuta at all for most of the series, since she can't see him. As stated though--Asuta fantasizes yes, and he mistakes any friendly comment from a girl as a romantic interest, but he keeps his word and he's honorable to boot. When male Hazumu is initially rejected by Yasuna, who's hellbent on showing him a night on the town to cheer him up? Asuta! When female Hazumu gets accosted by some young punks at the beach, who risks a beatdown to protect her? That's right, Asuta! But of course, he's 'the guy' of the group, so naturally, his intentions must be disgusting somehow...tsk tsk girls, how close-minded we are!
Another defense of Asuta is that though he initially feels a romantic interest in Hazumu, unlike most of the rest of the cast, he's able to realize where he stands quickly and easily, and he contents himself with passive lust. It's interesting to note however (there's always something interesting to note, isn't there?), that much later on, Yasuna actively questions Asuta regarding what boys at this age like and what they think about, and she's certainly all smiles around him. Look, it may just be an observation, but she'd have to be pretty naive to ask questions like that with truly innocent intentions! |
