When I was browsing a anime magazine somewhere in 1995 and came across a Rumiko Takahashi biography there with some little info into each of her works until then (no Inuyasha yet), her distict art made me very curious and the little review on Maison Ikkoku made me extra curious on this "normal life in manga" story.
A year later I started to read ranma, but I had to wait until 2000/01 to read Maison Ikkoku first chapters, it was exactly what I was expecting, a real life comic manga with some very interesting twists. Naturally as I got deeper into the story I began to like it even more and more and the rest is history.

Your experience?

I remember reading an article about it in Animerica years ago (back in '94 I think) but my first time I picked up any Maison Ikkoku manga was in my first semester of college, freshman year (1996) in Michigan, went to a local comic shop, and they had a whole bunch of Viz and Dark Horse manga (back when they were monthlies). Was already a Ranma 1/2 fan, so I thought I'd give this a shot too. I still remember the first issue I picked up - it was when Nikaido showed up for the first time.

Really liked it, started to pick up all their back issues and the GNs at the time. But then I moved back to New Jersey, and the local comic shop didn't always carry MI consistently (they'd pick up a chapter here and there...) so I sort of lost touch with it. Did read most of it, though. Plus the anime was impossible to find- for years I only saw the first two episodes.

Then earlier this year I finally found the key to my locked drawer with some of my old manga- including Maison Ikkoku, and the rest is history. :)

I was really into Ranma 1/2 so I used to always watch the adds for Maison Ikkoku. I became a fan of Rumiko's as I watched Inu Yasha, One Pound Gospel, Mermaid Forest Uresai Yatsura and Rumiko Theater. Really I had seen about everything except Maison Ikkoku so one day I bought the entire series and then watched it over the course of 2 weeks. Best money and time spent.

I always said that if I could get a girlfriend to watch that series I would marry her :D Seriously, I don't know what it is, but I can't get any of my friends to watch Maison Ikkoku. They borrow it and never watch it and then I get it back from them. Too many have done it to be coincidence.

hehe, it happened to me before as well as the opposite also.
Sometimes people just won't watch what you lend them no matter what you preach.

Usually when I give the seal of approval people watch it because they know they'll like it. I've never loaned something to someone that didn't finish watching it except a few instances and f'n Maison Ikkoku. 4 people. Four different friends, and non of them watched it. The first person I loaned it to pissed me off the most. He watched only the first disc, which was about 10 eps and then the last disc and dared to tell me he didn't think he missed much. Needless to say we are no longer friends, because he is a douche.

Another friend couldn't get into it and the other just didn't get around to it. However, I had a friend over when I was watching it and he was laughing his ass off and enjoying it... so I know there's something weird going on. Some sort of conspiracy *shifty eyes*

I must have seen a Urusei Yatsura movie on Sci-Fi sometime when I was a kid, because when I saw this the first time - and I'm not really sure why I selected it - I felt like I was just coming back to some show I had always known. I had this vague concept of some anime about a large group of characters living happily in a home together (Ah! My Goddess and Tenchi came later/didn't resolve the feeling), and I know it probably wasn't Maison Ikkoku that planted that memory, but it was what ended up fitting perfectly into that vague socket in my mind.

My Maison Ikkoku first experience was... regaining consciousness, realizing i just consumed 12 or so episodes and the resolve to go on.

However Maison Ikkoku was in fact my second Anime for me to complete after Ranma. Obviously there is a read thread in this.^^
