This may have been explained, and I just forgot about it, but why is Hanyuu a spirit/god that only Rika can see in the OVAs? At the end of Kai she was girl who lived with Rika and Satoko...why isn't she still like that?

1. As you may recall, Hanyuu is linked to Rika physically (i.e. if Rika drank alcohol, Hanyuu would also become inebriated). We know that Rika is the carrier queen, and Higurashi Rei episode 3 explains that Rika is actually the reincarnation of Oyashiro-sama (she is not, however, the reincarnation in the world where her mother exists, because her mother happens to be). Therefore, I think it follows that Hanyuu is the spiritual (deity/god) form of Oyashiro-sama. As for why only Rika can see her, well, that is because Rika is the physical embodiment of Oyashiro-sama.

2. Rika died in the world in which Hanyuu existed as a physical entity. In the current world, Hanyuu exists only as a spiritual entity, and not even on the same plane of existence.

When did Rika die when Hanyuu existed as a physical entity? Rika was alive at the end of Kai, and then in Rei Hanyuu is a spirit again. I don't understand =/

If anything, it's to do with the 'miracle' mentioned at the end of Kai. I don't really understand that part much myself but if Hanyuu was the spirit of Oyashiro-sama, then it wouldn't have made much sense for her to still be there after achieving their goal.
Does seem a bit odd though :P maybe i'm missing something. Maybe it's just up to the watcher to decide.

It could be possible that doing such a thing expends too much of her energy to want to do it on a constant basis.

After all, Rika only naturally sees her because of a special condition, one she's be doing everything in her power to protect for hundreds of years.

Getting OTHER people to see her probably requires a bit of her power.
That's my hypothesis, anyway.

Old avatar and sig retired for now.

There isn't really a meaningful answer. Hanyuu is generally passive and doesn't seem to enjoy interacting with humans. The only instances in which she does are when threatened/bribed by Rika or trying to save Rika. Hanyuu obviously could have had a physical manifestation at nearly any time in any reality but she doesn't until she realizes it's her only option, and even then she's slightly reluctant. Furthermore once in her physical form she's mostly somewhat shy and reserved. This leads me to believe that the primary reason that she doesn't manifest herself isn't because it takes too much power (although that might be a contributing factor) but because she simply doesn't want to interact with the world if she doesn't have to. She is a "god" after all, and most gods are considered to be passive towards the physical realm relative to humans; in that context it's not odd to believe that she's trying to cause minimum interference in things unrelated to her goal.

I think it's cause at the end of kai, she goes back to when takano was a child and then later cause takano's parents did n't die she changed the future so none of the other stuff happaned (like takano being the baddie), so hanyuu never needed to show herself to help out

I thought that the person who went back to Takano was Bernkastel, and she traveled to a different fragment =/

um... because this is an OVA? An OVA doesn't necessarily follow a "continuation" from the main series... think of it as an alternate setting or an alternate time...? If you've watched Higurashi, then we should all be used to alternate times and settings. lol

Side note: is it true that Bernkastel did show up at the end of Kai because I thought it was just Rika grown up and somehow back into the past. (yeah, that doesn't make much sense either, but I haven't played the VNs, read the manga, or even the Light Novels, so I'm pretty clueless about this entire series, behind-the-scenes-wise.) I dont know why she would be in Kai when I think she only exists in Umineko; someone correct me if I'm wrong.

lol guess you're right. but i think you knew what i meant. Rather, Rei is not a fluid transition from Kai because there were certain circumstances that were different, such as Hanyuu being a spirit again... why Takano was lounging at the pool when clearly she was suffering from the syndrome at the end of Kai... stuff like that.

Hanyuu has always been a spirit because she felt like she couldn't do anything to change/affect anything at whatever time she and Rika were in. This all changed when Rika's attitude drastically grew positive (all thanks to everyone's actions halfway through the 2nd season), and Hanyuu felt guilted that all she was doing was watching idly from the sidelines. So, she took on a human form that no one (other than Rika) realized.

Side note: ty neilikki for the neat piece of info. I had no idea of that at all. Then again, considering both shows are by 07th Expansion and that Umineko IS an alternate universe... I guess it should've been obvious to me before. Soo.. is Bern related to Rika in any way or what?

yeah, i was like "wtf" when i saw her. i dont know how to explain first episode of Rei too xD but it cant be alternate world than that which was achieved at the end of Kai, because it wasnt necessary to change worlds again, wasnt it? and they are talking all the time that its all over and stuff...
maybe Miyo was healed, but still, she shouldnt be forgiven that easily... i guess this pool episode is more mindfucking that all other from the whole series

hm...i wouldnt say that its exactly alternate universe...

uhm, completely related xD

I truly just think Rei was made for the heck of it, so everything concluded at the end of Kai is just thrown out the window when it impedes on the fun of Rei....which is both random and a bit annoying, in my opinion. If it was supposed be a sort of "this is after the end but with a 'what if?' bent," they should have made that clearer. Oh well.

I think the comedy episodes were just set in the Higurashi universe (it is from the fandisc and all), but the Dice Killing Chapter was a direct continuation. So I still want to know why Hanyuu was in spiritual form! XD

i think the whole dice killing chapter shouldnt exist, and Rei would be perfect as 5 episode of idiotic fanservice comedy
but on the other hand psycho Rika smashing Satoko with a chair is priceless
