Hi there, every one, we need your help! Was just doing a quick Google search for Anime Collector and found out that there is another program with the same name. Missed this, as I failed to do a name lookup since I took over the project until now. So we were discussing in the channel and came up with quite a few good jokes, but no really good name. This is your opportunity to shape the future of the project: create a new name. Obviously something that you also check against Google and which does not have the some problem as we now have.

I also add a copy of the channel discussion:
(10:27:35 PM) skriticos: damit, just made a google search for animecollector. there is another application with the same name. i should have checked that earlier when I took over the development.. argh.
(10:28:46 PM) skriticos: we should think about renaming it before legal issues come up
(10:29:18 PM) Necr0tex: hmm
(10:55:39 PM) skriticos: I did a little brainstorming, but all I came up was "anisync" and "anime marshal".. could really use some ideas here.
(10:56:05 PM) Necr0tex: hmm
(10:56:27 PM) Necr0tex: well, im not good at finding names for things xD
(10:59:51 PM) Necr0tex: anitrack, open ani updater....
(11:00:09 PM) Necr0tex: *open anime updater
(11:01:02 PM) dankles: should the name be limited to anime though? cause wouldn't manga suport be a future feature
(11:01:15 PM) Necr0tex: hmm...
(11:01:37 PM) dankles: like a romanized japanese word
(11:02:21 PM) dankles: i think a forum poll might be a good idea
(11:02:26 PM) Necr0tex: yeah
(11:02:45 PM) dankles: this is a comunity project after all
(11:03:12 PM) dankles: otakudb
(11:03:32 PM) dankles: or otaku tracker
(11:04:08 PM) Necr0tex: totally open otaku tracker - TOOT xD
(11:04:38 PM) skriticos: hehe
(11:04:51 PM) skriticos: i'll open up a forum discussion
(11:05:03 PM) Necr0tex: i like the idea of acronyms ^^
(11:05:35 PM) dankles: lol
(11:05:53 PM) dankles: acronyms are good
(11:06:35 PM) dankles: or reverse acronyms like gnu "gnu's not unix"
(11:07:02 PM) Necr0tex: yeah, i thought of this as well xD
(11:07:20 PM) dankles: like BAM for "bam's not malupdater" lol... maybe not that one

I like "otaku tracker" or otaku <something or another>

Other opinions would be great too though ;)

I don't like the term otaku.

Maybe "Your Anime List" because it's local.

of those, I like anitrack the best... although it's a little too bland and probably also used elsewhere.... maybe we should follow the example of other projects and pick a word from another language?

whatever it is needs to be short, enthusiastic, and memorable... I'll try to think up some ideas when i'm not so tired.

Voted for OAU.
I belive anything with tracker in its name is a bad idea, it might give a false idea for new users that it has to do with bittorrent.

"MALicious Library"
"Watchlog"
"Tube-o-meter" (seems taken, does 1933 count?)
"AniMeter" (definetly taken)
"Playtimer" (ditto)
"Open Mark-it"
"Toon Tab"
"Anime Array"
"Malmec" (My Episode Counter)
"Ani-maton" (think Dennou Coil)
"iMAL" (Bundy) (taken)
"Listerator"

Desperate: ニッキヘビ (could be read "diary snake") because it looks like ニシキヘビ (Python)

I can't stop thinking...

I have one idea for now:

name: 'maid'
motto: 'keeps your list clean!'
mascotte: you can have anything you prefer.

if you want the iMAL name I will give you access for it both here and on googlecode, but it's not going to work well if you add support to other websites like a n i d b :p

Nice, but I'm more for 'serious' names. Anime watchers are freaky enough already ;)

(there's old code for Anime-Planet lying around...)

I know how much people love multi clients (e.g. instant messaging) but don't think any two episode-list=sites are similar enough for this to make sense. The internal architecture would have to be arcane, and the user interface a mess.

Still difficult question. Listerator is fun, but we don't want to kill the anime list, but keep track of them ^^

I like the 'maid' idea, short, common English word, quite platform/list agnostic and is generally related to the topic. If we look for a more serious name, than we can still call it George (butler), but finding an appealing mascot would be more difficult -.-

As for the cross site thing. Of course we don't want to be the end all - be all for everything, but cross site listing should be possible, and basically was planned form the beginning too. Now don't understand me wrong, I won't split my efforts in countless directions now, we are still heading in the direction of stable, it's just that the underlying design is done in a way that adding this kind of thin should be no big deal.

Also as both sites have basically the same purpose, I don't see the big deal in adding support for both of them. The internal architecture simply has to be well designed and the user interface will be nice once I'm done with it (bit of my pet peeve right now)

I'd suggest MAL PlayTracker for the name. It tracks what you play, and it distinguishes the program from MAL Updater.

-chou (帳) is a japanese suffix... a document containing a list of things. You could probably translate it most closely as 'registry'...

edit: and apparently the kanji on it's own is read 'tobari' and means... 'curtain'? o.O

それなら「アニメ帳」はもうあるけど。

But that doesn't answer for all the French hits on Google.

I'm against names with Japanese meanings, unless they come from a native speaker.

そですか

I basically agree there too, but an application with Japanese characters in it would limit the cross-platform compatibility and confuse most folks -.-

Anyway, we're going to make the final decision in the channel tomorrow, so I hope to see some more proposals and opinions. Also hope for participation in the IRC channel then, around 9 pm GMT.

Honestly? It's no problem on the Mac since basically forever, NT-based Windows should be fine, and I have no idea about Linux (being too lazy to figure these things out was why I switched away from it ;)

Also hope for participation in the IRC channel then, around 9 pm GMT.

I think it wouldn't be written 「アニメ帳」, since then it would mean anime curtain.... It probably would be 「アニメ記帳」(anime kichou) if anything, but I'm not really sure and it doesn't matter anyway as the name will not be in kanji. It would be good to run it by a native speaker, though. I'll try to ask someone next week, or maybe you know someone online to ask before then.

edit: nevermind,「アニメ帳」is used online but.... who cares? *shrug*

Sure I'm on time. And remark about the cross platform thing was a joke. Sure it works on Linux too, but folks just wouldn't know that it's about, but think it is some random noise ^^

edit: and saka is probably right about the kanji. but if we want to use that, then it would really be a good idea to ask some native speaker.

Isn't overlap why we're doing this in the first place?

I think AniChou is a good name, but only as something that sounds nice. I'd never mention any possible kanji or meanings anywhere. Using foreign languages for coolness ist embarassing.

I would normally agree with you. I think in this case, it's not really applicable though... if we're tracking the anime we watch it's already culture worship isn't it? I'm very open to alternatives -- just happened to be a convenient one.

Before it can be considered someone who knows French should check for connotations. And it has to be decided how much name overlap we tolerate. After that, fine with me, as long as there are no awkward explanations :)

My Top 5 mentioned so far, in that exact spelling:

1. Your Anime List
2. AniChou
3. maid
4. Listerator
5. Ani-maton

hi, hmmm, i'm late, i just joined, well, honestly i like MALscrobbler or AnimeScrobbler better than AniChou. AniChou feels like need more explanation, i mean, newbie will ask what is this?. but with name i suggest they can relate it with AudioScrobbler (last.fm). But whatever, linux also has plenty weird program name ><

Anichou stands for anime list. And with a subtitle of "The Open Anime Updater"
It's already been set in stone so there is no going back at this point. It may not be the best of names, but it's the one that all the developers and much of the community could agree upon.

Anyways, I hope to see more of you zefiriss and feel free to help contribute to the project. We need talent of all kinds wither it be art, programing, web design or just cool ideas.
