I want to watch this with a friend but since she hasn't seen the Steins;Gate series I'm not sure if she'll understand everything. For those of you who've watched it, is it safe to watch and understand if you haven't seen the series beforehand?

I haven't watched it yet because I just ate Steins;Gate the anime in the past 2 days. But I want to ask you, how did the anime make you feel?
I was mindblown and I think this movie will be a continuation of the feelings and sacrifices made in the anime, in other words even if it can be watched alone, your friend will not feel the same emotions or amazement you will. If I were you I would take the time to watch that amazing anime alongside her, not to mention that you will spoil many things of the anime to her not allowing (if she ever watch it) the whole beautiful experience that a first time watcher had.

I know this post is rather useless since I'm not answering your question with knowledge about the movie, but right now I'm craving to share this with someone but sadly for me my friends don't like anime. You have a wonderful oportunity I lack, I hope you two can enjoy this masterpiece (my opinion) together.

No you can't. It's a sequel, which means it continues where the anime series ended.

You should definitely watch the series first.

Without watching the series, you won't understand the timelines and different types of time travel.

More importantly, you won't know or be able to care about the character Okarin, and the pain he has been through.
Shoot first, think never.

Definitely
It's an AU of the original series.

No.........definitely not. She might understand the basic plotline, but the movie by itself does nothing. It's only in connection with what you've learned in the original series, that the epicness comes through.

No your friend needs to watch the first season first. It's totally pointless if they don't.

Watching this movie first is the worst possible option. It's a full fledged sequel that ties up the plot nicely and will make you go 'Dayum, that was really well thought out in the end".
