I just wanted to make a thread to discuss different aspects of societies within certain fictional or non-fictional universes and what makes them interesting.

I want to bring up the first legitimate Visual Novel I tried, which got me hooked to VNs in general.

Swan Song

So for those who don't know, the premise of Swan Song without spoiling anything is, you're just an average person living in Japan, who's on a quiet night stroll when suddenly an earthquake occurs.

Of course, I've read many VNs and have yet to come across very many with such a simple issue. The issue of course is surviving the aftermath of a natural disaster, namely other people (looting, rape, murder, etc.).
Referencing examples such as Hurricane Katrina or the current Typhoon Haiyan where looting happened.

Another interesting society is that of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, which I believe is adapted into both an anime and manga (I think). You know, the whole isolated small town thing. Not sure if there are many actual villages and such that are cult-like, but they can be very real possibilities like this town town I cannot recall. It's in the USA, apparently free from federal laws, and has a population in the couple dozens.

In terms of books (not light novels), I say Haruki Murakami's books are amazing pieces of fictional and non-fictional representations of society.

One in particular, 1Q84. What makes it interesting is the smooth transaction from one dimension to another. The changes in society aren't significant but rather subtle and indistinguishable without careful inspection.

Sort of like the fictional world has overlapped time and space of the real world. Getting back to the real world is the issue.

I knew there was something oddly familiar about the title 1Q84. A quick google search answered my suspicions about the title being inspired by Orwell's 1984.
Probably should've avoided that wiki plot summary.
It gave the impression that the protagonist of 1Q84 likes to sleep around for an unexplained reason!
