I know what you're thinking, punk. You're thinking "did he fire six shots or only five?" Now to tell you the truth I forgot myself in all this excitement. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and will blow you head clean off, you've gotta ask yourself a question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?

You've mostly seen new movies but have you tried any old ones? Try the old Zatoichi movies, they are much better than the new ones. The old Harakiri, Ran, Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, The Human Condition etc are just a few to get started.

Yeah Mifune is a great actor. I don't know if he's the best, that's arguable. but he is up there with Nakadai and Kitano.

Samurai Rebellion has both Nakadai and Mifune. I haven't seen the movie though. Imo some of Nakadi's best movies are Sword of Doom and Harakiri.

Speaking directly to the classics some of my favorite old films are:

Tokyo Story: Yasujirô Ozu
Woman in the Dunes: Hiroshi Teshigahara
Pigs and Battleships: Shohei Imamura
Ugetsu Monogatari: Kenji Mizoguchi
Red Beard: Akira Kurosawa
Harakiri: Masaki Kobayashi
When a Woman Ascends the Stairs: Mikio Naruse

As for the more modern films, I wasn't a huge fan of All About Lily Chou Chou either but Iwai's Swallowtail Butterfly was very good. I suppose it also goes with out saying that if you haven't seen Eureka by Shinji Aoyama, Ohikkoshi or Taifu Club By Shinji Somai those should be bumped to the top of your list.

In regards to Japanese horror, I'm guessing I don't need to suggest any Kiyoshi Kurosawa films. But to this date Pulse and Charisma are my two favorite horror films, only second or tied with movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Videodrome, The Shining, Jaws and The Birds.

I haven't seen a great many Zatoichi films so I'm probably the wrong person to ask because my favorite is still Kitano's Zatoichi. But Kenji Mizoguchi has some great Samurai films like Sansho the Bailiff and Ugetsu already mentioned. Of course Akira Kurosawa and his Seven Samurai is still my favorite film in the genre, next to Kobayashi's Harakiri of course. Sorry I couldn't help you here but IMDB has this list. Which doesn't even appear to mention Kitano's version. Call me crazy but if you really wanted to be thorough it never hurts to start from the beginning. :) Ranker seems to have a rather long list with ratings of many of the Zatoichi franchise as well. The only other Zatoichi film/t.v. episode I've seen was Zatoichi Meets the One-Armed Swordsman, which I found inferior to Kitano's version so I sort of didn't go any further in the franchise. Honestly that's certainly not the best way to approach it. I've just added Zatoichi: Vol. 1: The Tale of Zatoichi to my Netflix queue at number 1 and will check it out to see what I think. Maybe you'd like to follow me on this very long Journey.

i think that's probably the best idea is to start from the begging seeing as there are 26 movies not including the kitano version so i'll see how far i get but there are alot of movies btw are you a big yakuza fan?

I'm wouldn't call myself a fan of yakuza films. Have I enjoyed some Yakuza films? Sure. But it is a huge genre with tons of work. Some of the more notable directors who have done many films with Yakuza in them are Seijun Suzuki, Kinji Fukasaku, Takeshi Miike...

Once again Ranked seems to have a fairly interesting list of Yakuza films, of which I've seen 6 out of those fifty films. The list has made me incredibly curious about many of them since I've only seen Branded to Kill in the top 10.

I've decided to include some other links you might like woody.
