Compare some characters in the anime with real-life boxers here.

This popped in my mind when I saw a real life boxer that used the flickers that Mashiba specializes in.

Hajimes boxing style is based on Mike Tysons.

Only the characters are fictional I think. Everything else - like boxing style or punches - are all true.
The only exception I think is the Gazelle punch which doesn't have a name in real life actually.

I dont know a ton about boxing, but from what I've gathered, these things are real, these techniques and such, but they seem to be greatly exaggerated as well. But then again, what isnt in the world of manga?

The Japanese wikipedia entries give really interesting details on who is based on who.

Miyata is based on Japanese boxer Takahashi Naoto, who is also friends with Morikawa.

Sendo in addition to being based on Rocky Marciano is also based on Akai Hidekazu

And Takamura is loosely meant to be a mix of pro wrestler Antonio Inoki and hard hitting Roberto Duran

And Aoki is based on Wajima Kocihi who also used the frog punch, and was the poster boy for Boxers Road 2

Gazelle Punch was used by Floyd Patterson against Jens Ingemar Johansson.

"The Smash" was created by Donovan "Razor" Ruddock to beat Mike Tyson.

The "Dempsey roll" isn't a technique, really, its just what the creators decided to call the style in which Dempsey fought. He made a lot of short, penguin-like movements while walking forward and throwing huge hooks. Without getting too long-winded, Dempsey was more of a street fighter and almost always threw every punch while stepping, even his jab.

As far as Tyson goes, he fought similarly except he didn't throw as many wild punches. His head movement side to side and in a figure 8 pattern was what the Dempsey roll in the show was based on

The Gazelle punch was really a lunging left hook, I talk about it in this thread
