The organization of these chapters is so confusing.
I'm looking at it on MangaHere, and the first six chapters are listed as "volumes" and contain multiple parts.
"Vol 1" contains chapter 1, parts 1-2 of the story "Mermaid's Smile"
"Vol 2" contains chapter 2, parts 1-2 of the story "Mermaid's Village"
"Vol 3" ditches the "chapter" designation, and instead contains parts 1-4 of the story "Mermaid's Forest"
"Vol 4" is where things get a little confusing, as the cover now says "Mermaid's Dream", but the chapters are shown as "chapter 1", "chapter 2, part 1", and "chapter 2, part 2"
However, looking at Wikipedia, it seems that these volumes were published differently in Japan: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mermaid_Saga#Volumes
"Volume 5" on mangahere is "Mermaid's Promise", which consists of four parts.
"Volume 6" on mangahere is "Mermaid's Scar", which consists of four parts.
However, In Japan, "Mermaid's Dream", "Mermaid's Promise", and "Mermaid's Scar" were originally published as "Volume 2" of the Mermaid Saga.
"Volume 7" on mangahere is the first one to be split up by chapter, and it contains parts 1-4 of the story "Mermaid's Gaze"
"Volume 8" on mangahere consists of the story "Mermaid's Mask", which I believe i four parts long, but it seems like they cut out the title pages for the chapters.
If you look on Mangahere at "Mermaid's Mask Issue 2" (posted as "Vol 8, ch 2") it seems like a page is missing in-between pg 144 and 146. I'm guessing that was some kind of title page (probably for part 3) that they omitted for no reason.
Then "Volume 8" on Mangahere has "chapter 5", "chapter 6", and "chapter 8", which are literally just reprints of "Mermaid's Promise", "Mermaid's Scar", and part 1 of "Mermaid's Mask"
In Japan, "Volume 3 of the Mermaid Saga had the stories "The Ash Princess", "Mermaid's Gaze", and "Mermaid's Mask", that means the English version on Mangahere is apparently missing one story from the third volume.
In any case, when trying to figure out the number of chapters, it really depends on if you count each part as one chapter, or if you count each story as one chapter with multiple parts.
So, let's recap. That's 9 stories, all consisting of multiple parts.
Story 1, "Mermaid's Smile", 2 parts
Story 2, "Mermaid's Village", 2 parts
Story 3, "Mermaid's Forest", 4 parts
Story 4, "Mermaid's Dream", 3 parts
Story 5, "Mermaid's Promise", 4 parts
Story 6, "Mermaid's Scar", 4 parts
Story 7, "The Ash Princess", ??? parts
Story 8, "Mermaid's Gaze", 4 parts
Story 9, "Mermaid's Mask", 3 or 4 parts
So, all 9 stories consist of at least 27 parts... however, Wikipedia states that the manga in japan consists of 16 "episodes". I'm not sure where that number comes from. If each story was released in 2 parts in Japan, it would be 18 "episodes"... so I'm not sure which stories only consist of one part or whatnot.
Edit: okay, so forget all that. I found this website - http://www.schala.info/mermaid/
This helps with understanding how the English publication split chapters up, and also re-arranged things.
Essentially, in short, the first English version by Viz (the same version available on MangaHere) published the stories "Dream's End", and "The Ash Princess (parts 1 & 2)" as a single 3-part story called "Mermaid's Dream", when in reality, according to the serialization dates, "Dream's End" is chapter 7 and "The Ash Princess" is Chapter 12
So, below is a chart of the chapters, in chronological order of their Japanese serialization dates in Shounen Sunday Magazine (according to that website I linked), and the corresponding English title.

I hope this makes MangaProject's release of the manga a little easier to follow.
The other option is to simply buy Viz's updated four-volume release of this series (which was published in 2004) is read in the original right-to-left format, and organizes the chapters properly. (There's no scans of this version available online anywhere, from what I've seen, though.) |
