Below may contain spoilers, you have been warned

So, I'm a pretty big fan of Ah! My Goddess, I have been for years. However, one thing that's always intrigued me but, I've never found explained was the reason for the Goddess, Demons, and Earth Spirit markings. I would like to note that Belldandy and Peorth both have similar markings, but I believe this is because they are from the same office up in Heaven.

Really, the question is if it's a way to identify where a Goddess works or if it applies to her functionality. Obviously, we know a marking can change as seen in the manga and TV series when Urd was taken control by the Lord of Terror. So, in truth, it might not apply completely to their office.

GHAAA Curse you. Because of you I started checking their faces and compared their markings couple of times but I can't find any reasonable pattern. Mhm here is what I'm thinking about out three Main Goddess'. Marking on their cheeks are quite similar, all our triangular. With Belldandy and Skuld, their markings are pointing down, they are both sisters so... maybe this is the meaning of those markings. As far as Urd is concerned, she has triangular markings as well but they are pointing into another direction which could be explained by the fact that she had a different mother than the other two. Coming back to Skuld, her markings are... I mean they have those empty spaces inside, maybe it refers to the fact that she is younger/youngest or that she is not fully-developed, she is not full-fledged Goddess. ARGH :-( There is just not enough goddess' there are not enough patterns we could compare.

Wow. Old topic revived.

I'll make a couple of comments. There's not really an overall system that you can pin the markings down to. In the end, the markings serve as some sort of interface between the Goddesses and Yggdrasil (on the demon side as well.) They seem to have them from birth, as this picture of Hild and baby Urd from the manga suggests:

Other than that, there are two types of markings -- head and cheek. Head markings seem to be the domain of higher ranking goddesses and demons, and you never see a First Class goddess without a head marking. Cheek markings are more common and are found on lower ranking people who work around Yggdrasil.

I'm not sure if there is a system at all, or whether it's just coincidences. You'll get a headache just trying to figure out the Goddess Licensure system, which is modeled after the Japanese driver's license system. I think in the end, the "system" is just whatever Fujishima needs at the moment.

What is essential to observe to this markings is the color. The Goddesses have blue markings whereas Demons have red markings.

Don't talk to me about character development if Kaizuka Inaho or Slaine Troyard are in your favorites.

Blue-good
Red- evil

The more angles the shape has, more powerful the person is maybe? They have triangles while the lord of terror a.k.a. Urd's mom has stars on cheeks and is more powerful. This is highly speculative of course...
