Though this is a fairly basic question it must be asked simply because it is the basics, not because we are secretly trying to understand your tastes and backgrounds so that we may eventually have enough information on all of you to select shows to blog that will return the highest viewership numbers as well as subconsciously brainwash you into being loyal servants. Nothing of the sort is happening at all, we are merely interested in what got you into anime in the first place.

So I guess I will have to in good faith post my background so that I subconsciously make you more willing to do so as well while trying to not reveal anything at all so you don't have anything on me.

I personally got started on anime with the advent of Dragon Ball Z on tv as a kid but truthfully I just thought it was another cartoon and watched it. It wasn't really until high school where my friends gave me my first manga to read, Hellsing, that I really entered the world and never really looked back (mainly because mostly everything else on TV bores me, Daily Show, Colbert Report, No Reservations, and various other informational programs non-withstanding). I tend to like stories with a well thought out sequence and obvious direction with clever writing/foreshadowing thrown in as thought puzzles for the viewer to speculate on. Though I do enjoy romantic comedy's as well on top of just comedy+something type shows because who doesn't like to laugh really. Though some things are a hit and miss with me but all in good humor I guess you could say. I tend to stay away from shows that have excessive skin/panty/bra displays rather than what could be considered tasteful fan service, the difference between a chisel and a jackhammer is what I'm trying to get at. Though that doesn't mean I don't watch them at all. As friends were mainly instrumental in my entrance to the anime/manga society they play a continual role in my continuing of it so, in order not to be left out of the discussion, I watch what they watch/read as well.

Guess thats enough about me though, your turn.

Simple question, simple answer.
Anime: It's been lingering on local TV since I was young.. so I guess it was a natural thing after I got on the internet.
Manga: I'm the curious type of person, which means I usually hate it when the story gets cut-off. You can guess what happened next.. :)

PS: Koro, I love the poll!

I got into anime cause I love cartoons back then( to hell with the politics in our country for spouting nonsense. Just kidding). If a "certain" seiyuu was raised in the house of music, I was raised in a house full of television where I enjoyed watching "Akazukin Chacha", Zenki, "Dragon balls", Voltes 5, Sailormoon, Pokemon, Rayearth, Yu Yu hakusho, Flame of Recca, Speed Racer, Detective Conan, One piece, Fushigi Yugi, Ranma 1/2, Slam Dunk, Rurouni kenshin, B'tx , Card Captor Sakura, Gundam Wing , Gundam X, Hunter X Hunter, Captain Tsubasa, Fuusigi Yuugi, and Escaflowne(I should have put etc. but whatever) where anime was still awesome as hell . If you want to know what genre I watch I watch anything except horror. If you want to know why, just ask and I'll answer " :) " or send you into the v0id in RC IRC channel. Thanks to the internet now this days that I can now watch anime while they aren't airing and save them later for the last. First I tried stream videos but somehow I stop doing that cause the video gets cut when internet connection gets disconnected. Good thing .torrents were made and the rest is history.

In the manga side, the first thing that I read was I's where I read it only in books in the bookstore. Then I found out that manga CAN be read in the internet(G*d damn it, I shouldn't have spent those money). After that I stop spending and kept reading manga until I got absorb by it and forgetting whats happening outside then I stop reading and got back into anime and RL again(Manga consumes your soul and your anime. True story). I'm REALLY REALLY picky when it comes to manga cause like what I said it consumes my soul a lot.

I, in my thinking set :) , thinks that each person has there own personal taste in manga and anime so I don't argue much with them. I really HATE people who thinks "this anime/manga is crap cause the producer/director/script/artwork/etc. " when the anime hasn't even aired yet. Hell if you even think of making a story that you were proud of it and every people thinks it was shit/crap what would you think. I think they deserve a chance. Making anime and manga isn't as easy as just writing one.
I guess that is all I can say about what and why question on how I got into anime/manga.
P.S. : 40%(entire life) where I get my anime info and line-up is from Random Curiosity. And forgive me with my grammar suck. I know it sucks .

Although I had watched Sailor Moon and Captain Tsubasa when I was little, the thing that truly got me into the anime was this wallpaper I came across while looking for a "true" monster image.

I really liked the character because it looked a lot like me. Later I found out that it was an anime and started watching it. That's when I found Random Curiosity, while I was looking for more screenshots from Monster anime and came across a blog that linked to Random Curiosity.
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...
