Obvious enough, who are your favorite anime directors?

My alltime favorite is Akiyuki Shinbou, director of all the recent SHAFT shows (Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Hidamari Sketch, ef, Pani Poni Dash, Negima?!, Tsukuyomi, and the upcoming Shina Dark) as well as shows earlier in his career such as Le Portrait de Petit Cossette and The SoulTaker. He is also suspectted of being Juuhachi Minamizawa, a hentai director responsible for Temptation and Sibling Secret. Shinbou is known for his incredibly trippy visuals, usually involving sharp colors and making the absolute most out of a small budget. Some of Shinbou's trademarks are single-color shots, nonsensical backgrounds, tons of eyeballs, crucifixions or other random religious symbolism, tons of stained-glass windows, all-around awkward shots, a glair for the dramatic, squeezing the entire show into one third of the screen and replacing the other thirds with a random still image, and other generally weird crap, sometimes specific to a show. He's certainly one of the unique minds in anime, and thankfully is always working on something.

Shinichiro Watanabe since I guess he's like the Tarantino of anime
Hideaki Anno for the artsy fartsy me
Makoto Shinaki for doing it all by himself and copying Anno
Tatsuya Ishihara because Haruhi had good energy and storyboarding
Akiyuki Shinbo because no duh
Akitaro Daichi beause GYAGU MANGA BIYORIIIII
Osamu Dezaki for SPACE ADVENTURE COBRA and other manly 80s things

Yoshiyuki Tomino for writing, but he really can't direct

Shinbo is the man, definitely. Others I like include Tatsuya Ishihara, Makoto Shinkai, and Kenichi Kasai.
