Post a showcase of your latest scripted signature designs, emphasis here is on the code, ie the features of the signature rather than the quality of the images. This is a place to show off the geek side of your sig.

Mines a rotating image sig, with dynamic content.

Although it's a little pointless (currently it only supports my images), but if anyone wants to try you can try it with your own user by going to khobbits.net/s/<user>/s.png

The Technical stuff:

First of all... HERE BE THE CODE
Not sure why you would want that anyway but if you want to read/tinker/rape it feel free to do so, it's licensed under the do what the hell you want with it license™

In my Debug page you can see more or less all the info you can use.. notice that the Last.FM parser isn't complete, and also the imagemap-like thing I'm working on (notice that mouse-overing the image returns coordinates in the link) got bugged while I was trying to understand why it took so much to load (fault was of Mal being slow as hell, but by the time I noticed I already bugged it :D)
Both of those things will NOT be fixed anytime soon.

As for the reason, is because I'm making the whole script again ground up (making it object-oriented, with parallel cURL calls, cronjobs, and more crap.. also I was thinking of dropping GD and switching to ImageMagick, dunno).
The main aim for now is to create a working "platform" that supports multiple users and multiple signs for each user and that get info from any source I can think of.. (namely the first parser I'll redo are mal anime, manga feeds, profile page, last.fm feed and maybe xfire)

All this won't solve the main issue (that I suck at photoshop namely) but it will keep me busy, and if I ever finish it I'll release it with some sorta of tutorial for everyone to use.

PS: no, the imagemap won't work on mal (at least for now) it requires the ISMAP or ismap="ismap" declaration inside the image tag (aka, a new line of code in the bbcode script of the forum/website).
Needs to fix this sometime but I'm lazy - since 11/05/2009

It's supposed to be an iTouch. Since compared to the iPhone the iTouch has no telephone module, the signal strength indicator in the top left corner must actually be the Wifi signal strength to MAL. ;o)

Looks pretty good, but you're going to have to reduce the height on that if you want to keep using it here.

mmmm... tsukihime <3

I almost completely overlooked this thread.... but I guess I'll mention my current sig...

foreground isn't really anything special... just as a normal php sig. I duplicate a black copy to make a hard drop shadow for text effect, since I haven't put glow into my library yet.

The background is generated by using a combination of the MAL Updater xml and the rss feed from my profile. in the following manner....
  • Mal Updater send an update request to my sig (i don't use the data)
  • script downloads the latest rss from my profile
  • I make a list based on the rss of all my recent anime updates, and run some filters
  • I look up each entry's corresponding mal image url by looking it up in Mal Updater's xml of my whole list (download a fresh copy of xml if the img hasn't in there, since it's probably a new series).
  • download any images that i don't have already using curl
  • once i've got all the series images in my cache folder, I use imagecopymerge() in a nice loop to write them onto the film strip image base with partial transparency (hence the 'merge' part)
  • Now I do the normal sig text from the most recent two updates
  • Finally, overlay a funny render on the right. (dreaded spoon attack!)
  • write out the image (i store it as a file and reference the file, since 000webhost does periodic audits during which php is disabled, which would otherwise break me sig).

I think using malu to update and still drawing the rss from mal is the most robust way to handle updates, as then you can always recover from failed updates. You also only update only when absolutely necessary, instead of bogging down your server with useless cron jobs.

That's pretty cool! dynamically retrieving the image data and embed it as a background :)

mind if you show that little snipplet on how to do the imagecopymerge and the retrieving part of the covers?

err... well. I started copying to put here but since I tried to stay OO, it's scattered between files. The part where I actually imagecopymerge() for example is buried in my AddImage() function, where one of the args is transparency. It's basically just an interface to imagecopymerge(), though... I plan to share all of my code eventually, but after I organize it.

As for the downloading part, it's mostly spaghetti atm as I did it kinda roundabout. It's probably better to do it the way Bard does it in his sig script (see getMALimg() in parse.class.php). In his, if the image doesn't exist, he downloads the series page by mal id, then matches the image url using a regular expression.

In mine, when an image isn't found I download my whole malu rss.... which I now realize is much less efficient.

Little sad that most the sigs in here are dead :(

My sig is still alive and kicking, although i had to request a whitelist recently to get the updating working.
