I strongly recommend to finish the anime series first! In the novel, Doujyou was not injured in the Ibaraki battle. Poor Genda got bullets same in the anime. Prologue Jan 15 Seika 34, a group of terrorists attacked the nuclear power plants in Tsuruga and took the control of them. Japan Self Defence Forces stormed in the plants and all the terrorists killed themselves before got captured. Capter 1 The beginning Kasahara and Doujyou went out on a date to have camomile tea. In the middle of the date, they were called up for the emergency. The government enforced a special law that strengthen the authority of the police, army and the Media Improvement Committee. The new law enable the committee to restrict the freedom of writing of writers and journalists. And they targeted at Touma Kurato, whose novel "Nuclear Power Plants Crisis" resembled the strategy of the terrorist attack. Origuchi barely brought Touma to the base of the Task Force and Ogata decided to hide him in the dorm of the officers. On the fifth night, two officers attempted to kidnap Touma but they caught by Komaki and Tezuka. Shibasaki set a snare on the chief librarian Etou (who is the executive member of "Future Project") and gave him a false information. Shibasaki threatened Tezuka Satoshi that she will disclose "Future Project" tried to kidnap Touma and convict them as a cult group. The conversation between Shibasaki and Satoshi was thrilling and explained the core of the issue this series presented. I separately translated this part. Shibasaki vs. Satoshi Shibasaki borrowed Tezuka's cell phone and called Satoshi "Chief Librarian Etou was the only executive librarian who knew Touma was sheltered in the Library Force Base. The two officer who attempted to kidnap Touma already confessed that they were the member of the 'Future Project' and they followed Etou's order. Commander Hikoe decided to hold inquiry into this case. According to Kasahara, the inquiry by the 'Administrative' group is quite harsh." The last sentence was explicitly sarcastic. She scorned Satoshi in the revenge for Kasahara entraped by him. "You can easily imagine what will happen to your 'Future Project' when the inquiry get a solid evidence." "Are you going to show to public that a cult group was acting secretly in the Library Forces? I'm anoxious about the damage on the reputaion of the library." "We Library Forces dare to disclose the truth instead of losing trust by being leaked the hidden secrets afterwards." She implied "Mind your business before caring about us." "Can you neglect the two officers and Etou? If you do that, it will destabilise the integrity of 'Future Project'. Other members will think you are merciless person." "You are such a good strategist, huh?" Satoshi thought about the possibility that intelligence agents of the Task Force have already infiltrated in the 'Future Project'. They will shake up our group taking advantage of it. "You want to use Touma for the negotiation of ntegrating Library Forces with the Ministry of Education as advantageously as possible." Satoshi noticed that his brother told her about Satoshi's theory "The shallower the angle of our 'bow', the better".("Bow" here means the act of begging the Ministry for the integration. "Shallow bow" implies the condition of the deal is favorable for Satoshi.) Satoshi got a little irretated to know how deeply his brother trusted Shibasaki. "First of all, it's unknown that Kantou and other Library Forces accepts your idea. I'm eager to know how you manage that. Even the 'Administrative' group won't agree with it." "No reason to answer your question." Satoshi replied with a sneer. Shibasaki didn't expect his answer. "Alright, the discussion regarding the organizations always goes round and getting nowhere, as you see. Shall we discuss an essential issue?" Satoshi admitted to himself that he was also taken in by her tactical words. "What do you think about the censorship?" "It should be eliminated." He replied without hesitation. "There is no censorship with justice. It always relfect the intension of the ruler. It's a right of the citizens to read and judge a book no matter how immoral it is. Of course, we have to take a great care when it violates someone's human rights. But we should leave it to the judiciary for the judgement." "We can agree with each other up to that opinion. Next question. Does the Media Improvement Committee has a justice? They behave as if they do." "No way." As long as there won't be a right censorship, the censorship by the Media Improvement Committee cannot be justified no matter how good excuses they make. "That's why the Media Improvement Law passed while the public was distracted by other scandal. It could have not been passed if they had fully discussed the deceit of the law and put the bill open to the public. The government merely snatched fake justice." "Agreed. But there is one more thing I wanna add." She paused one moment. "The reason why the Media Improvement Committee can disguise themselves as a fake justice is that their existence itself is the concession of the government. Not only the government but countless number of people covet the profit out of the censorship. And the committee themselves also receive the profit. That's why they won't forgive us and people who deny the censorship. Am I correct?" "I show a respect for your brave remarks." It's true she surprised Satoshi. Few people can explicitly point out that fact. (What Shibasaki said was the darkest side of REAL Japanese society. It involves Yakuza/Mafia, politicians, NPO, school teachers, lawyers etc etc.) "They are in duty of protecting the concession for the government and other parasites sucking profit from the censorship. They can confidently claim their justice because they are given roles of the spokesman of the government and the relief organization for the weak. But..." Satoshi fought back. His pride won't forgive himself being beaten by a young girl. "That does not justify the Library Forces. Do you understand that? " "Of cource, I do. Because we took arms to fight against the censorship." That was what Satoshi was about to point out to Shibasaki. "We can not have been a justice from the moment when we chose to hurt and kill people to resist the censorship even though we were not responsible for the situation." "You're smart. The smartest I've ever talked with." Shibasaki parried his best praise by saying just "Thanks." "It appears a ridiculous situation from the outside that two injustice organizations are scrambling for the position of justice. Both the Media Improvement Committee and the Library Forces have been irrelevant since established. That was destined when the Media Improvement Law passed. Right pieces cannot exists on a distorted chessboard." Unlike Kasahara who denied Satoshi from emotion, Shibasaki refuted him accepting the contradiction of the organization she belonged to. "I think we have reached a certain agreement." "Yeah.." "I propose one plan. I heard that there is a group of people who oppose censorship in the government." Obviously Asahina told the information to her. He reported to Satoshi that Shibasaki was not qualified as an intelligence agent. Satoshi realized he was possessed by her and gave a false report. "'Future Project' can go inside the government without bowing taking advantage of Touma's case." "I know... Yes, I knew it..." She meaned Satoshi and Future Project bring together the bureaucrats and politicians opposing the censorship using the Touma's case as a capital chance and establish a large anti-censorship faction in the government. Future Project can use the connection to the Media Improvement Committee to go inside the central administrations as a advisor of the Ministry of Justice. Satoshi didn't carry out that plan because he chose to gain a small but steady position in a long term strategy. He claimed to other members that his choice was more reliable. Etou also thought that way and tried to negotiate with the Ministry of Justice using Touma. It's a silly idea but Satoshi could not look down on him. Satoshi got shrinked at the short term plan Shibasaki mentioned. He had to admit that he was a wimp like Etou. "If Future Project agree with this plan, we can cooperate with you." It was a compromise she could accept that the Library Forces sends Future Project as an independent group to the central administration. "The Library Forces remains to be a local executive, and Future Project becomes independent of the Library management and discuss the censorship policy inside the government . That's your plan, right?" "I promise you we will release Etou and the two officers and won't make it open that Future Project is a cult group. I think this is a historic chance of eliminating the censorship." "If you were in my position, what would you do?" "Of course I jump at the chance. My name will remain in the history. I would take your place if I could." Her immediate answer recoiled him. Satoshi wondered how much this woman had confidence in her ability. "One more thing. You brother thinks you can do it." "Hey! Don't say that!" Tezuka Shouted. It loosened Satoshi's tension. "Can I talk to Hikaru?" "Sure." After some arguments, Tezuka answered. "It's me." "Do you think I can do it?" "What is your big mouth for? If you cannot do things Shibasaki can, throw yourself on the ground and apologize to mom and dad!!" "Will you forgive me if I accept her plan?" "Only when you succeed!" "I got it. Give the phone back to her." "So, what's you answer?" "I'm in your plan. Please release Etou and the two." "Send a written oath to Commander Hikoe in one week. We don't trust a verbal promise." "Understood." "I appreciate your cooperation." Satoshi finished the call calmly. End of Shibasaki vs. Satoshi Satoshi gave in to Shibasaki and promised to cooperate with the Task Force and the "Future Project" was sent to the Ministry of Justice as an advisor of the anti-censorship group. Capter 2 Overcome the turning situation Touma was transfered to Inamine's private house because the dorm was not safe anymore. Origuchi published an article about Touma and the conspiracy of the Media Improvement Committee and it aroused publich opposition to the new enforcement of the law. The Media Improvement Forces made a sudden attack to Inamine's house to kidnap Touma but Task Forces knew about their attack beforehand with the help of Inamine's house maid. Kasahara and Doujyou took Touma out by a car and Inamine alone confronted the Media Improvement Forces with a shotgun hidden in his wheel chair. This scene was really cool. I separately translated this part, too. Inamine vs. MIF When MIF officers sneaked in the Dining room, they were astonished to see the man waiting for the unwelcome guests there. Inamine said with a slight smile, "Sorry for I'm not the man you want. But you have to stay with me until the security and the Task Force arrive here." One officer clucked his tongue and tried to turn on the lights. "Oh you can't. All the bulbs are unpluged." "Then what can you do on the wheel chair? We will easily chase and catch Touma." When the officers was about to turn around, some mechanical made a sound. Officers found a twin shot gun hidden in the wheel chair pointing at them by Inamine. "Hidden arm in the wheel chare !?" "The logistical support team of the Library Force made this special wheel chair for me. I would not have been kidnapped if I had used this in the case of the archive museum." "What an absurd thing you made..." "Do you think it even more absurd that I have experienced plenty of occasions where I could utilize this absurd chair?" Inamine continued calmly. "Don't move. You are now in Hino." The name of the place intimidated the officers. Here is Hino and Inamine is the surviver of the Nightmare in Hino Library. "When I was young, I played the clay pigeon shooting with my wife and my tech was kinda expert. I'm maintaining this gun periodically." Here in Hino, Inamine lost his wife, his leg and the newly built library. "You deprived me of everything here." "There is no evidence we have involved in the case!!" "Alright, I will say in other words. The Media Improvement Law deprived me of everything." The extremist who attacked Hino Library was supporting the law. There was no way to refute his words for the officers. "Please don't move. I've been suppressing my desire for the revenge of my wife by concentrating on the establishment of the Library Forces. You intruded into my house and the memory with my wife. Your heads look nothing but clay pigeons for me. I barely control myself not to shoot you. But I will reflexly pull the trigger if you move." The officers stood still in his quiet words. End of Inamine vs. MIF Doujyou drove the car to the buliding the Task Force bought when Inamine and Kasahara kidnapped and there awaited UH60JA helicopter. The helicopter lifted a container with the car inside and flew back to the base. The base was already surrounded by the Media Improvement Forces and tried to shoot the helicopter down. The pilots managed to release the containter safely but both of them got shot and the helicopter crashed onto the hanger. From this operation Genda was back to the captain position. Satoshi denied that he leaked where Touma was hidden to the Media Improvement Forces. He knew the chief librarian Etou did it. He called him and kicked him out of "Future Project". Etou opposed to Satoshi's decision to cooperate with Task Force. His principle was "to be neutral". He thought someone should cooperate with the Media Improvement Committee to cancel out the Satoshi's decision. Etou was replaced with Hatano the deputy chief librarian. Capter 3 Grab the capital chance! To appeal to the public sentiment, Genda came up with a operation "Relay Broadcast". The TV channels took turns to air a program which criticized the new law of restricting the freedom of writing. The Media Improvement Committee stopped the broadcasting of each of the channels for 24 hours. Satoshi assisted the operation by appearing on TV as a commentator. Finally, Touma sued the Media Improvement Committee that the restriction of the freedom of writing was against the constitution. The lawsuit was quickly rejected in the first trial. This sentence set fire on the public and they made a concession in the second trial: "The new law will be temporally effective for five years". But no doubt they will extend the limit after five years, when the public have already forgotten about the issue. Task Force came to a deadlock to find a way out. Kasahara suddenly came up with an idea "How about fleeing to some other country?" Members of the Task Force jumped at the idea and International Federation of Library Association (IFLA) offered help. Capter 4 Drive through the storm The judgement of the third trial was given on the day a huge typhoon hit Japan. The sentence from the Supreme Court was "Shorten the limit of the law to one year". Task Force set out for the secret operation and drove to the first candicate Holland Embassy. But the front gate was blocked by the Media Improvement Forces. They realized that the operation was leaked and gave up Holland and Sweden, the second candidate, and headed to the US Embassy. Just before they reached the gate, two Media Improvement Force wagons stormed in. Ogata abandoned the car and split the team and Doujyou and Kasahara escaped from the site while the rest of the member decoyed the Media Improvement Forces away. They tried to took Touma to British Embassy but the Media Improvement Forces found them and Doujyou got shot in the thigh. A book store sheltered them inside the shop. Doujyou gave Kasahara his badge saying "Promise to come back in one piece." Kasahara kissed him and headed for Osaka, which had several consulates, with Touma. Capter 5 The end Kasahara rented a car and drove for Osaka on the highway. She tried to contact the base but her cell phone was broken because of the heavy rain. So she sent a coded telegraph to avoid the wiretapping.Task Force received the telegraph and called Kansai Library Forces for help. Shibasaki found out that Hatano leaked the plan of Touma's refuge to the Media Improvement Committee. Hatano used to belong to the "Principle" party but he got influenced by Etou's "Neutralism" and became the member of the "Future Project". He also opposed to Satishi's decision and continued Etou's rebel against Satoshi after Etou resigned the chief librarian.Shibasaki admired Hatano for his decisive character but she denounced him for his betrayal. Kasahara and Touma arrived at Osaka. They went to a deparment store and asked the clerks to disguise Touma as "the most inconspicuous person in Osaka". The clerks put a heavy makeup on him and made him a gaudily dressed middle-aged woman. "That's a typical Osaka fashion." the clerks said. It's definetly true. I can't appreciate the sense of fashion of women in Osaka. Kasahara parted from Touma and went to the US consulate. Touma walked through the downtown of Osaka and arrived at a park next to the British consulate. Kasahara stood in the middle of the cross road and shot the SMG in the air. "Here we are Kantou Library Task Force!!" She kept on shooting until she ran out of the bullets. When she prepared herself to be shot by the Media Improvement Forces, a wagon stormed in and rescued her. That was Kansai Library Force. Touma was also found by them and safely taken to the British Cousulate. The news of Touma's refuge to UK spreaded worldwide and the Japanese government received severe criticisms from the major advanced countries. Finally the government terminated the new law of restricting the freedom of writing. Kasahara visited Doujyou in the hospital and they became a couple like in the anime. Epilogue Three years after Touma's case, both the Media Improvement Force and the Library Force were disarmed. The censorship still remained but the situation was getting better thanks to Satoshi's efforts. Kasahara and Doujyou married and she took over the instructor position of Doujyou. HAPPY ENDING! |
