...death.

Honestly, I didn't belive that's really going to happen. How come Oda could kill one of the most amazing characters of One Piece? I don't think you belived that as well. Before Ace, none of the characters of manga events (excluding flashbacks) has been killed, even the worst enemy assholes have been saved, somehow. Besides Luffy was going to save him. Has anybody thought that Luffy can actually fail in saving anyone, especially his beloved older brother? I couldn't belive, what am I seeing. Seriously, what the hell, mister mangaka?- that were my thoughts shortly after Ace's death. Of course, I was damn depressed, hated Oda and everything around and even stopped reading manga for a little while.

When I calmed down, I felt the events that have occured lately were quite logical. Ace's captain had to die because he needed to make a place for new, young pirates who are going to become legendary someday (especially Luffy, who is eventually going to be the king- anybody doubts that?). Whitebeard's era was heading to an end, since the pirate captain was old and chronically ill. Ace's life goal was to make Whitebeard the king of pirates. What would be the reason of his being a pirate if only WB died and Ace kept on living? Somebody could say, Ace could become the captain of Whitebeard/any other pirates but... do you really imagine him fighting with Luffy for the name of the king of pirates? Ace once had an adventure in a pursuit of king's title and failed, after which he swore to fight under the name of Whitebeard and dedicated himself in doing so, and that's the reason I think he wouldn't join any other crew as well. I can't also see Ace leading a peaceful life somewhere in the world, like Rayleigh. He was too young to stop his adventure by choice.

Summing up, I'd say that Ace's death was in a way inevitable. That, however, doesn't mean I'm feeling totally allright with it- on the contrary, I really regret that Ace is never going to see how his little brother's dream is coming true.

Well, me too has stopped reading OP after Ace's death.
When I first saw him in anime I thought "If Oda will hurt him any possible way, I'll drop manga/anime".
Well, I fullfillied the promise, actually only Ace kept me reading this endless manga...

Let me start be saying that my favorite character from one piece is Ace and i hate that he died. But when i think about it maybe it was a necessary for him to die (thus saving Luffy). He wanted to make Whitebeard the Pirate King and Whitebeard was aiming to make Ace the Pirate King (if they both didn't die then they would have to fight for one piece with Luffy and i really don't see that as a good continuation of the story ). He died so that Luffy can realise he's weak and become stronger (i think). Oda also compensates with the new looks and powers of the Strawhats xD. Not to mention that i read once in the manga that Gol D. Rodger is waiting for someone (meaning he is waiting for Luffy) and i bet Ace will be there too, waiting for Luffy (for some ghost adventure maybe xD).

Oh, I'd really dig the "ghost adventure theme" you mentioned, Razor9760. How come I have never thought of that, haha, it's a pretty good idea, let's hope Oda thinks so too!!

I was devastated to say the least when Ace died =((
I don't read mangas that often as I can't get myself to stare at the pc screen for too long, but, oh boy, did I read One Piece! I found Ace to appeal to me so greatly that I can only think of a few other characters that I like as much. I was a huge fan of his, and as with all of us, his death came too sudden and unexpected for me. I get the logic, but what actually pisses me off is the fact Chiyo-ko mentioned. How come all the rest and all the scum (sorry for that word) and all the unimportant characters somehow slack off certain death and him not. I was furious and I even cried. I was also sad. I don't think anything in the further development of the story can make-up for this loss. And I sure hope Oda has some whoop-ass-kickin excuse like storyboard based on his death that would put all his fans a bit at ease. Meaning that those events that led to his end and Luffy's incapability to save him should really be worth it and not only by us knowing so, but it should be pretty well implemented into the storyline and some major events that will be revealed in the future. Because if you follow the real world we live in - to suffer the loss of a close family member is something that literally shakes your world and either destroys it and you or serves as your motivation and a new-found strength after you take your time to moan them. One looks at life at a different angle after meeting death like so.
To sum up, I expect sheer epicness to be based on Ace's death! ;) hehe
