★ Informations ★  Hatsune Miku (初音ミク, Hatsune Miku) is the second Vocaloid2 closely following Sweet Ann and the first installment in the Vocaloid2 Character Vocal Series by Crypton Future Media released on August 31, 2007. The name of the title and the character of the software was chosen by combining Hatsu (初, First), Ne (音, Sound), and Miku (未来, Future). The data for the voice was created by actually sampling the voice of Saki Fujita, a Japanese voice actress. Unlike general purpose speech synthesizers, the software is tuned to create J-pop songs commonly heard in anime, but it is possible to create songs from other genres. Nico Nico Douga played a fundamental role in the recognition and popularity of the software. Soon after the release of the software, users of Nico Nico Douga started posting videos with songs created by the software. According to Crypton, a popular video with a comically altered software mascot holding a leek, singing Ievan Polkka, presented multifarious possibilities of applying the software in multimedia content creation. As the recognition and popularity of the software grew, Nico Nico Douga became a place for collaborate content creation. Popular original songs written by a user would generate illustrations, animation in 2D and 3D, and remixes by other users. Other creators would show their unfinished work and ask for ideas. On October 18, 2007, an Internet BBS website reported Hatsune Miku was suspected to be victim of censorship by Google and Yahoo!, since images of Miku did not show up on the image searches. Google and Yahoo denied any censorship on their part, blaming the missing images on a bug that does not only affect "Hatsune Miku" but other search keywords as well. Both companies expressed a willingness to fix the problem as soon as possible. Images of Miku were re listed on Yahoo on October 19. A Hatsune Miku manga called Maker Hikōshiki Hatsune Mix began serialization in the Japanese manga magazine Comic Rush on November 26, 2007, published by Jive. The manga is drawn by Kei, the original character designer for Hatsune Miku. A second manga called Hachune Miku no Nichijō Roipara! drawn by Ontama began serialization in the manga magazine Comp Ace on December 26, 2007, published by Kadokawa Shoten.  First Appearance in Chapter 2. Aged 14, Kagamine Rin is twins with her brother, Kagamine Len. The name "Megurine" can be read in Japanese as the "sound that travels (the whole wide world)," and the name Luka invokes the homonymous Japanese words of "nagare" (flowing) and "ka" (song) or "kaori" (scent). Yuu Asakawa provides Luka's 'cool, yet husky feminine voice'. Unlike its previous two characters, Crypton advertised Luka's 3GB vocal database as "Japanese/English bilingual" and chose her name to express its hope that she will transcend borders and cultural barriers. Luka was designed by the Japanese illustrator Kei, who had previously created the designs for Hatsune Miku and Kagamine Rin and Len. However, unlike previous mascots in the series, her costume is not based on a school uniform. Only a few days after her release, many songs were produced. On the 70th Weekly Vocaloid Ranking (February 2, 2009), many of Luka's songs appeared in the Top 30, knocking the very popular "Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru" and songs produced by ryo (with the exception of "Melt") right out of the Top 30. "RIP=RELEASE" had taken the #1 spot, and had earned a total of 843,233 points, making it the song with the highest one-week score. The Future of Luka? Luka is the next member of the character Vocal series to be Append, however Crypton has not confirmed if she will have Append just yet. Due to her bilingual coding, her "moody yet husky female voice" carries over into both languages and was designed to handle moodier genres like Jazz. Overall, Luka serves to bridge the gap between both languages and has proven to be her appeal as a vocaloid. She serves as an ideal vocaloid for English speaking users planning to use Japanese vocaloids and vice versa for users who are not so used to speaking English and planning on using English Vocaloids. Since she speaks both languages, Luka is able to partner with both Japanese and English vocaloids respectfully. When installing Luka, it is important to pay attention to the release dates of Vocaloids you plan to install after her. Older and newer versions of the Vocaloid 2 software engine can occasionally cause conflicts. Luka has both language engines, so she can cause conflicts between Vocaloids of either language. A user can fix this problem if it occurs simply by installing the Vocaloids in release date order, Luka is noted to be the most likely Vocaloid to produce this conflict. Luka's Japanese dictionary is extensive and on par with previous Japanese Vocaloids and there are no known problems with that part of her program. Also, as a Japanese vocaloid, she has all of the phonemes that are often missing from English vocaloids such as the 5 breathing phonemes ([br1]-[br5]). It is reported that she may produce a lisp-like sound on some notes however, she still maintains a more mature tone then previous Crypton Vocaloid 2 era voicebanks. She has all the English phonemes that English vocaloids have in her voice databank. However, despite the inclusion of English she was not intended for a world wide release, because of this, a number of reported problems are present in her voicebanks. It has been reported that she does not seem to have many distinct vowel related diphongs in her sample library in her English voicebank, making her sound slightly choppy when some phonetics are used together. In other cases, she may not have enough distinction between the phonetic sounds in her samples that she does have to distinguish one pronunciation from another. She also has only the main/common words in her dictionary, so users not used to more complicated English words may have some difficulty when they come across them, however, an extra data library of English words for her English dictionary is available. Her voicebank may be considered "sub-standard" to other English capable Vocaloids and her overall results will depend on the user. She is not unusable and still can be used for most English songs. There are also no major report glitches with her voicebank as other English capable Vocaloids and her sample quality is considered good despite her flaws. As a bilingual Vocaloid, she has superior capability of the English language than the Japanese only vocaloids. If need be, less than confident users can use an another English capable vocaloid to aid in fixing her dictionary flaws or help to harmonize her results so she appears smoother.  Meiko is the first of the Japanese VOCALOID voice synthesizers released by Crypton. She was created using voice samples from Meiko Haigo. Meiko is portrayed as Kaito's older sister. She is often seen drinking One Cup Ozeki, a popular sake brand in Japan. Thus, sake is her character item. Her signature color is red.  Kaito is the second vocaloid that Crypton released. He is often portrayed as a gentle, kind-hearted, easy-going, and somewhat oblivious young man. He is 20 years old and he Meiko are often referred as "Nenchou-gumi" (年長組, The Seniors) compared to Vocaloid2s. He is 5'10" tall. Kaito's character item is ice cream. His seiyuu is Naoto Fuga.  Megpoid is voiced by Megumi Nakajima and released on June 25, 2009. She comes with 3 sample VSQ files, "Happy Birthday", "MYSELF", and "Hitori Yurari". "be MYSELF" is an original song by Nakajima.  Her name, in phonetic reading, means "Got bored. Going to bed." (飽きた、寝る。) She started out as a meme on 2chan, where a troll user started threadcrapping all Vocaloid related threads. Some user commented that he won't get angry only if the troll was a cute girl. Thus Akita Neru, non-Vocaloid net-chara was born. Her image color is orangish yellow and her character item is a cell phone. Her design was created by Smith Hioka. Neru is sometimes written as a Miku wannabe, others as the anti-hero of the Vocaloid personage. She mainly represents forum/bbs trolls, those who don't have enough patience to use the Vocaloid software, or those who gave up using Vocaloid. She complains about the official Vocaloids(and Haku when she appears) and why she hates them, later revealing how she actually likes them, and that she wants to be loved by everyone as well. Later Haku appears and calls her tsundere. Cameo Appearances: Ch. 6 - Sensei Ch. 7 - Employer-sama  She is shown on two bottles of MEIKO's sake: one labeled "重音てと", another labeled with her name in default Katakana, "重音テト"; she appears with Haku Yowane in another chapter. Teto is a 31-year-old chimera girl who was born as a joke from NicoNicoDouga forum's users. She loves eating baguettes, and she has a close relation with Ted Kasane and Ruko Yowane. Her character item is baguette. Depicted as more innocent than Miku Hatsune is. Teto is cheerful and eager though may be naughty at times, perhaps inspired by her mischievous roots from Doraemon. Depicted also as a Tsundere, but to more gentler extent, unlike Neru Akita. She gets very angry or sad if someone has bread and does not share with her. Teto enjoys teasing people just to show she cares about them since she doesn't want to show her love. She can get out of control if not eaten bread for one day. Obviously, she doesn't act and sound for her age, for a 31-year old girl, thus her human age is more believed; the depiction as a 31-year old girl is often dismissed as artics from the users of vip@2ch. who created her. There are also persisting rumors of Teto's wings and a tail. She may or not be aware of her own Chimera form.  Miki (or "SF-A2 miki") is a Vocaloid2 announced by HEARTFAST, created by AH-Software and voiced by Furukawa Miki. She has long red hair with a funky ahoge, red eyes and doll joints. Her standard outfit consists of a furry blue headset with pink microphone, blue gloves and a sort of futuristic-looking one-piece mini-dress, striped socks (kneehighs), and boots.  Haku is a sad Vocaloid who just can’t sing as well as Miku. She is always crying because of her frustration and vents her frustration by drinking. Her image colors are silver and purple.  Name interpretation: Yokune - Greedy Sound, from the fact that she has two voicebanks (female and male). Her name is also a play on the phrase "yoku neru ko", which translates to "the girl who sleeps a lot". Ruko is classified as a dere-dere, or a romantic person. She is also drowsy a lot of the time. Ruko also has a closet gambling habit. She likes being petted, and reacts like a cat. However, getting on her bad side earns you frequent invectives from her. Although recognized as a hermaphrodite in Japan, Ruko is mostly seen, illustrated and depicted as a female in the Overseas UTAU scene, due to her aesthetics. Her unusual height is a possible nod to a Japanese proverb that says "neru ko wa sodatsu", which means that "a child who sleeps a lot grows up greatly". Alternatively explained by fans as the result of possibly mixed American heritage, as normal Japanese girls are not known for this kind of height. |
