As I understand it, it's an alternate timeline for the main Gundam timeline, the Universal Century (UC). The point of divergence is sometime during the plot of the original Mobile Suit Gundam show from 1979. I suspect you won't need to know anything in particular, but it might help to watch the first series for background. You could also watch the movie adaptations of the '79 show, they're fairly well regarded.

I would say original Mobile Suit Gundam is required to fully understand the premise. From what I saw in the movie, knowing the core UC timeline is going to be best (MSG, Zeta Gundam, ZZ Gundam, and Char's Counterattack) as they used some elements from later series too, but at a minimum the original should be watched or you will be lost for the first 30 min, if not more.

Having now actually seen the movie, I rescind my earlier statement, you should definitely watch the original series before this one lol. Sorry for the bad information T_T

Definitely the original Mobile Suit Gundam. Or the three edited recap films of the original series.

The series features Char as the catalyst of the story, I have hard time believing watching the original won't improve it

@mitsubachi03 why it's a necessity? Except for giving greater appreciation, I want to know if to recommend people

@Guilmon1 The first half felt pretty reliant on the audience's knowledge of the events of 0079, to the extent that I think anyone who hadn't seen it would have a very hard time keeping up. It doesn't really explain who most of the people it name drops are, for example.

Honestly it may just confuse you. Watch Gundam 1 after, maybe.

I've just seen the movie, l recommend first timers looking up 0079 episode 1 or movie 1 afterwards if not before.

Novels I have read/am reading pending approval: since November 10 2022
