There are some Higurashi fans that keep calling other anime that are also dark/violent "edgy" such as Hellsing, Berserk, Black Lagoon, Gantz and Elfen Lied (which I can understand people criticizing its edginess) yet Higurashi can be pretty edgy as well and I don't know why they're throwing stones at glass houses. It feels similar to the Tekken fans shitting on DOA for fanservice when Tekken also does that. There was even one Higurashi fan that called Dream Hunter Rem edgy like bro yeah it has violence and gore too but not as harshly impactive and excessive as Higurashi as well that DHR has a very chill protagonist compared to every Higurashi character.

Well you could say that the one thing all of these shows have in common is the gore. The plots are fairly different.

Hellsing and Berserk are dark fantasies, edgy because of the characters appearances, personalities, gore, sexual violence. Black lagoon is an urban crime action drama. Again; crime, drugs, nihilism, sexual violence. Elfen lied is more like Higurashi than the aforementioned 3, but it still has some of those additional 'edgy' connotations.

So basically, comparing the settings and the amounts of dark themes on each of the shows, it's not hard to see how those other 3 are seen as edgy by people who don't see higurashi as particularly edgy itself. Higurashi only offends people's sensibility to violence. Can't say the same for the others.

Arifureta just finished airing. What would you say is edgier? Even though arifureta doesn't have gore, the word edgy fits it more appropriately than it fits higurashi. That's the edgy I bet higurashi fans were talking about.

"Why they throw stones when they live in glass houses" is what I assume you meant to say.

@IhnalakoKaina I think the only show on that list I have complained about is Gantz. And mind you I only watched the first Season that is on Crunchy Roll, so I have no idea about later developments there..
I have not seen Elfen Lied, so I won't comment there.
Personally, I love Hellsing, especially Ultimate.

For Hellsing, Berserk, and Black Lagoon, they're not edgy because they're dark/violent. They're edgy because the characters all try to act "cool" and nothing else while doing the dark and violent things. Higurashi was more psychological themed. Personally I think it helps if the show attempts to make the viewer feel any sort of empathy or sympathy with characters. Although my experience with Berserk specifically is just the 3 movies so it may be different elsewhere, the most they had you feel aside from the cool fighting was the pain of the ntr.

Ngl it sounds like you’re just a hater.

99% of the time people aren’t solely fans of one specific series, but are usually into multiple different shows.

So the fact that you singled out specifically Higurashi fans is quite odd. How did you even determine that these people are Higurashi fans? Did they all specifically state that they love Higurashi and nothing else before bashing these series?

I mean being edgy isn’t a bad thing. Tokyo Ghoul is one of the most edgiest mangas on the planet but the reason why it’s so loved by many is because of its execution and portrayal. There’s a good kind of edgy and there’s the bad edgy (the one that has horrible execution or portrayal). So I wouldn’t really say I view people viewing those type of series as edgy as a particularly bad thing personally.

i really think you have a problem with the word itself. I know it's not a really liked slang and I don't like it either, but when it comes to shows, them being edgy really just means they're being provocative. Shows can be anything for all I care as long as I enjoy them.

Other edgy shows are shitty but Higurashi is peak

And I identify as Mion

She is the green hair girl in my signature and it's cropped from a 3D Boxing render of her fighting Jessica Ushiromiya from Umineko no Naku Koro ni

Higurashi's anime (first season) doesn't really do itself any favors in gaining this reputation of being edgy. Its a shame really when the source material isn't very focused on the violence and dark themes at all.

To be edgy, you'd have to be a work that tries to test the boundaries of what dark and mature themes and content is acceptable. While showcasing its dark content as something "cool."
Higurashi doesn't do either of these. Nothing in the source material or even the anime is particularly boundary pushing. And the violence and dark subject matter is executed as something cool or exciting to watch. Quite the opposite actually.

Higurashi unfortunately because of the amount of violence it has in the show, became "edgy" because it was a show that people took on as cool because its a cartoon with adult stuff in it. Its the equivilent of someone boasting "Ha.. look at me I'm watching anime. But its different cos its so mature and adult. Look its not weird or childish cos it has murder and abuse in it."

The content of the show isn't edgy or tries to portray itself as edgy. Altho the execution of DEEN pushing the violence and creepy girl behavior to the forefront doesn't do itself any favors..
Its the audience who came in and hyped it up as something dark and deep that gave it the reputation of being "edgy."

I was always shocked by the violence and paranoia, but never felt truly bad for them really.

It wasn't until I read the visual novels after finishing the anime that my feelings for the characters changed. I too started feeling bad for them. Because I was able to ground and emotionally connect with why each character started to mistrust each other, became paranoid of others and felt like they had no one to rely on.

By understanding each character's individual pasts, their own internal trauma and how it manifested their biases that clouded their perception and interpretation of the events around them, I was finally able to understand their perspective and feel bad for things going horribly wrong.

With the added perspective, it reframed these shocking yet random events that I couldn't emotionally connect with into genuine tragedies that could have been prevented.

Thats real and your opinion is very valid I dropped it for a day because I was kinda paranoid and scared and kinda losing it but after that I said mmmmmm I want more… then I started understanding and I just started feeling horrible for them and seeing what they are getting forced into just pains me and the poor lil baby rika she just wants a normal life…:3

Higurashi fans can say that the anime generates the atmosphere of dread which why edgy shows are made with very little of the dark and tiresome overhyping that others shows use. Moe girls are not edgy in themselves but Higurashi makes them dreadful, that is edgy. I agree and disagree. But there is no question that how Higurashi achieves its mood is unique. Only Shiki gets creepy in a similar way. And despite the image of the boy with the bloody bat, Higurashi is not like Elfen Lied. But then what show is like that one?
