Holy sh*t I did not expect this movie to be this fun. I have to clarify I've never watched Slam Dunk, I just read 2 or 3 chps back in the day but I really liked it. I heard this movie could work as a standalone so I watched it and was completely blown away with how good this was. The animation, the story, the osts, the characters they were so good. I will watch Slam Dunk soon or probably read it, what do you all recommend?

Definitely read manga. Anime is too old and slow paced

The Slam Dunk anime still totally rules, in spite of its pacing. I never binged an anime as hard as I binged that one -- I watched 48 episodes in 24 hours. The pacing just makes it that much more suspenseful: you can't wait to start the next episode. The anime is also hilarious -- you lose a lot of that if you're manga only. The anime had many original gags, and the comedic performances are top-notch.

The manga is stupendously good too. It's manga where the art improves dramatically over the course of its run.

Sorry to break it to you, but you've been missinformed, it doesn't work as a stand-alone movie because what you watched is the last match in the manga, the match that concludes the story, so now that you've been spoiled it might never be the same

It works both as a sequel to the main series and as a fan service movie to manga readers. It has the final match but with some changes in the pov of characters but it's mostly to adapt the iconic last match which was never adapted in the original anime.

You should have read the manga first or watched the anime. Cause you just watched the ending of slam dunk. But Anyways I am glad you liked the movie. I haven’t watched the Anime so I would suggest you to read the manga. It’s so damn good!!

I'm well aware of it but it's never explicitly stated which round of the match it was in the movie, it's just a match in the nationals against Sannoh and when I'm done with Slam Dunk I'll watch this one more time, cause it's good. Thanks for the info though.

The anime doesn't really capture the same vibe as the manga. The First Slam Dunk movie does that. So, read the manga. But only if you like reading.
