A mindscrew ending. But with careful examination. It's showing the ugly side of conviction and sacrifice.
'Conviction can be a curse. Morality is something you find when you're lost.' — Jolenta (Chapter 46).
Conviction is a double-edged sword, a force that demands great sacrifice and can obscure one’s moral compass.

'Sacrifices must be made for the sake of the beauty of this world' — (Chapter 62)
The final chapter presents a what-if scenario—a Rafal lookalike who loses his sense of morality due to an unrelenting and blindingly strong conviction. Or rather, it is his refusal to waver in that conviction that ultimately leads to his loss of morality.

This was a wonderful story with unforgettable characters and many powerful messages about theology and society as a whole.

The way the story moved through the lives of different characters may not be a new concept but it’s rare to see to see it done so meaningfully. I was heartbroken to see the main characters of each story reach the end of their journey in such tragic ways. And the panel near the end with them watching the sky at different times of day in their final moments was really powerful.

(Perhaps I interpreted this wrong, in which case, please correct me!) I feel some sadness that all of the characters’ hard work came to nothing in the end beside a small, overheard conversation, perhaps inspiring a great mind to consider the theory. He didn’t even read the manuscript his father had! Just as was said in Nowak’s final chapter, those people died for nothing.

I haven’t watched the anime yet but I’m looking forward to it after finishing this masterpiece. Hopefully, it lives up to the manga.
