I don't read ln, but today I came across spoilers in which people wrote that Jinshi would abuse or kinda SA Mao in the future in certain scen or scenes (he choke her?)and I must say that I am surprised and disgusted. As if... I know that Jinshi may not have had a great past, but the anime shows him as a gentle and relatively normal guy. I regret that I discovered this because it seriously spoils his image. I know he wouldn't seriously hurt Mao, but that's not normal either. These are some quotes and comments. Tell me, is it true? . WTF is going on in these novels? XD Direct quote: "You do make me want to hit you sometimes." (...) "Not in the face. It would be too obvious." "I wasn't actually going to hit you." "I know, sir." Jinshi wasn't the type who would lay a hand on a young woman. ''It was painful--but Jinshi only squeezed harder. His other hand, still intertwined with hers, worked its way up her back. No, no! He was going to twist her arm out of joint. With her throat crushed and her arm wrenched, Maomao's face contorted with agony.'' ''Then in the vol5 – epilogue things get violent. The male lead has made it obvious that he wants the female lead to be his wife. He has rejected every other female since Book 1, and she has side stepped him the entire time, apparently this has driven him to want to dominate the female lead. He chokes her, restrains her, pins her down, and something happens that is written in vague and suggestive language that it is not consensual. Plus it is revealed that the female lead somehow magically can bring men to climax by sliding closer to them. It is only in this chapter that it is clear to the readers that she does not want him or his attention.'' ''I just finished vol 5 a few minutes ago and came straight here to say basically this. The sexual assault in the end here was very creepy and borderline rape~ with the comment by Maomao that she would be “better off acting like a doll” seeing this side of Jin is a let down for his character.'' I don't know, it spoiled my mood so much today... It seems that this theme of Jinshi's ''toys'' and his obsession and inability to cope with certain things is more serious than I thought. I hope it doesn't become toxic, but even if it does, I know that anime series unfortunately tend to romanticize such relationships. I know that Jinshi loves Mao, but it's not like she has an obligation to give him that feeling. Sometimes love is one-sided |

@junebin oh my, I didn't expect such scenes in this series. I also didn't expect that Jinshi could be so out of control. After all, he knows that Mao was once attacked or almost attacked by men when she worked in a brothel. How could he forget himself like that and do the same thing?he's frustrated that she doesn't return his feelings, but she doesn't really have an obligation to love him. I guess not enough people take this into account. Mao has every right not to fall in love with him. maybe they'll tone it down a bit in the anime. I'm not ready for this shit propably next season anyway thanks for the answer |

He doesn’t actually SA her I don’t think he does however assault her which is still strange but again another example of how he’s still a manchild. I’m pretty sure he goes to force a kiss on her and she accepts it only to then turn it on him and make a fool out of him with one of her courtesan techniques that I’m pretty sure if context is correct leaves him… well finished. It’s basically a power struggle one that maomao wins. She’s not bothered by the event either btw even if she should be cos well he’s a prince and also she’s aware it was out of character for him. She’s also aware she was kinda provoking him but yeah it’s still fucjed he put hands on her but yeah there’s no rape or anything. |

@Ahmedpower Mao should maybe be more emotional, but why do all the people expect her to fall in love with Jinshi? I know they will probably be together anyway, but she has no obligation to express her feelings for him and be in love with him. Jinshi obviously doesn't understand this and does stupid and brutal things, but that doesn't excuse him. ''what jinshi should do''maybe he shouldn't act like an ass and expect everyone to do what he says. Mao has his own feelings and life. If she said she loved someone else, what would he do? did he kill her or himself? he would probably think so because he is so dramatic. |

@Ahmedpower You have such a chaotic way of writing that I have no idea what you're talking about. Am I supposed to be jealous of a fictional character? Ok. I don't hate Jinshi, but I see you blame Mao and not him for the bad things. Mao is not a saint but making Jinshi a victim is ridiculous |

Why ? this man stole from him his youth , he is living in 24 years old , but his real age is 19 , he will not have children because of his job , so his feelings get out of him with nonsense, he is also a Victim just like Mao both of them, Victim, so don't blame them if you want to blame you should blame fate , that made them like that And remember, you began to blame , so my answer is all of the above |

@Ahmedpower He mimed a rape because he’s frustrated with her lack of obvious affection. It’s not about her mother or not experiencing love. Jinshi’s father ordered Luomen’s mutilation, Jinshi authorized her purchase. He can literally have her executed or do anything he wants to her without fear of repercussion. There’s an extreme power imbalance and Maomao has spent her life trying to find a way to be independent in a world that treats women as property. Sympathizing with Jinshi here is ridiculous. He’s being a selfish, domineering twat. For Maomao it’s terrifying. She’s either confirmed he’s a prince and that he’s hiding his identity or she’s discovered that he’s a very powerful man who’s infiltrated the inner palace. Either way it makes it much more likely she’ll be killed to keep her quiet. For Jinshi it’s a traumatic experience that reminds him of his connection to the previous emperor and the corruption, despotism, and horrific sexual debasement he perpetrated or facilitated. From that point he changes dramatically. First he becomes a good employer, then someone worth serving. He goes to extreme lengths to try to abandon his role as prince so that she can be with him without the shackles that come with being a member of the imperial family. People call this a slow burn romance. It’s not. It’s the story of a cultural revolution from the perspective of an integral, somewhat reticent, extraordinarily unlikely player. Their relationship is an important part of that. Maomao could never be influential at that scale without her ties to the imperial family. The author deconstructs the moronic prince-commoner romance trope by diving in to what it would actually take for two such people to have a partnership-as-equals in an extremely hierarchical, patriarchal society. She makes Jinshi believable - annoying, self absorbed, conceited, confused, insecure, wounded, persistent, adaptable, loving, and determined to be a better person. The scene you’re mentioning was physically nauseating but it wasn’t defining for either of them. I still don’t like him and would love to see The Adventures of Dr. MaoMao, but I’ve really enjoyed where this series has gone. |

And in the last two episodes, arc 1 season 1 Jinshi, you hate him he asked her what she wants ? , he wanted to make her stay, but he was afraid to force her to stay , come on, stop making me laugh you are too easy , don't judge by your hates on men , rise above hate but you hate powerful men in common what should I do ? I love Mao , and I wish her the best, but it's not about me , and it's not about men and women it's about Mao and Jinshi. Stop and RISE ABOVE HATE |

MaoMao, but I’ve really enjoyed where this series has gone.

oh , you are a self independent woman
who think that life will be better without a man
and congratulations, you are now spoiler for this show π by this last comment
you didn't mention it with spoiler
you don't like him not because of him , because he makes you remember that there is a difference between men and women
and for me, this is slow romantic progress
if you don't believe that , it's about you
your hates is more than love , I don't want to judge on you anymore, but think about it again
spent her life ?!!!!!!
come on, stop !!
she decided by herself to come back to the castle
return to first season, first episode arc 2
she decided by herself and her father told her this is her home she can come back anytime
so if she doesn't like it , she can come back easily, with no force power on her. And in the last two episodes, arc 1 season 1 Jinshi, you hate him he asked her what she wants ? , he wanted to make her stay, but he was afraid to force her to stay , come on, stop making me laugh
you are too easy
, don't judge by your hates on men ,
rise above hate
but you hate powerful men in common
what should I do ?
I love Mao , and I wish her the best, but it's not about me , and it's not about men and women
it's about Mao and Jinshi. Stop
and RISE ABOVE HATE
@Ahmedpower Maybe I’m just an old man from a different age, but generally a spoiler tag in the OP title covers the responses in a thread, Mr. Hyperchauvinistic McBigot. I’m perfectly fine with judging you for sympathizing with rapists, feel free to judge me for seeing women as complete human beings. |

so when you love someone , if you try to be close to him, I will say you are cringe too
@Ahmedpower The way Jinshi pesters Maomao is just cringe and unnatural, I wouldn't do that in his stead. |

Maomao terrifying she is playing with poisons , and a man with power terrifies her . Do you believe that ? and terrifying her with what power ??! her father ?? her life ?? do you believe what you are saying ? please, everyone , if you thought that terrifying by bad way , it's not, this just like acting from Mao ( a joke ) I don't know why you hate Jinshi, but this man, till now he is a good man , and I believe in gyokuyou and her judgement, she sees a good man in Jinshi |

Her father said that to her she can come back anytime time evidence from season 1 arc 2 third evidence the concubine gyokuyou respect him and the big evidence if he is this bad guy, why he will be Castrated man I have my evidence to prove that jinshi is innocent from all these charges on him there are other evidence he is just a childish man . If he didn't get something cry like a baby , but he is a man too , try to protect her from poisons and he is worry about her He was sad when she told him about these robbers He was afraid to know about this man who said about her father but she knows about him He tried to close the distance between them by going with her to the city and change his own shape to be closer to her you thought that he was going for someone so you don't know men π π All these evidence, my theory and I am chaotic and passive aggressive okay I accept that but please read my comment and see my all evidence |

@bcasey25raptor Tbf I think the issue is moreso that this show thus far has seemed like it will be a wholesome slowburn where it goes from a one-sided love story to a romance inch by tiny inch. To have the male lead suddenly assault her is maybe a "realistic and complex theme", but it is off-putting for those who are rooting for a cutesy and wholesome plotline, something I might add is what this show has been like thus far. If the show had presented hints towards such themes from the start, I think less people would be upset, but it's kind of coming out of nowhere, meaning people who wish to avoid violent scenarios in these types of shows were pretty much cheated into liking it up until now. |

@sdedalus83 Jinshi wasn’t frustrated by Maomao’s “lack of obvious affection”. Jinshi was frustrated because Maomao was playing dumb, as she does in many occasions since the beginning of the series. Maomao never directly rejects him, but she never directly accepts him. She disrespects and acts familiar with him in many occasions, but she draws a line every time the subject becomes inconvenient to her. Jinshi is frustrated because Maomao is ignoring him and his feelings and she can act like that endlessly because Jinshi refuses to normally use his authority against her, and Maomao is well aware of that. Jinshi could just order her to marry him since the beginning and he has every mean and right in this society to do so, but unlike any male in his family, he doesn't want to trap Maomao in a cage. So they're in this relationship with blurred boundaries where Maomao won't push him away because there are several moments where she shows actual care for him and enjoys his presence, and Jinshi doesn't know how to deal with her or with this relationship because Maomao keeps avoiding any real confrontation and serious talking. If you focused less on what Maomao is saying and more on what she is actually doing, you would realize that Maomao allows Jinshi a certain amount of liberty, such as remaining on his lap because he was drunk and she has to “repay him” (even though he was the reason why she fell?), blushing when he indirectly kissed her, letting him buy her courtesan contract (...you know what it normally means? It has to be someone you trust), she let him carry her on his arms (and it’s never “I'm uncomfortable”, it's "What If someone sees us?" in those cases). It's not because she *has to*. She has no hesitation of disrespecting Jinshi on a daily basis and could just run because it never brings any real consequence to her (She isn't dumb, she can figure that much). If you're reading Kusuriya no Hitorigoto and thinking you can believe in everything Maomao says you're doing it wrong; she is only human, she wants to avoid certain difficult matters and, yes, the “love” one has to do with her upbringing, her Mother, and her self-named incapability of feeling the love her 17-year old self "lost on her mother's womb", when we were supposed to know better: that she is capable of feeling it like any other human. Like any other human, Maomao has flaws and lies to herself, but people think that Maomao is right all the time. From Jinshi's perspective, a person who is not in her head, how would you think of a person who behaves like this around you? Would you think that the person isn't contradictory? Maomao learning how to deal with trauma, growing as a character, and figuring out her own emotions is a important part of the story, and Jinshi is one of the greatest keys that forces her to face it. Now, about the scene everyone is freaking about. It's not a SA scene. Maomao grew up in the red light district, she knows how it's like being almost assaulted and she has no fear of thinking that men who are scumbags are scumbags. She never thought of any scene of her with Jinshi in the same way, and in the next volume such situation happened Maomao was thinking to herself that "she sees him favorably and isn't without certain affection to him", thing that she never said to Jinshi himself. Every time a scene like this happen, the fandom acts like Jinshi is an ass and Maomao starts to joke around. She continues to behave like her usual self around him. She didn't think explicitly that she despised those situations even once. She scowls at Jinshi and surprisingly the other questionable close parts they share together are the ones to not be taken seriously. Maomao is not a Mary Sue and she is intelligent to the point that if she doesn't dissect a mystery people won't find the solution, but she won't do the same regarding her feelings, that's up to you. Jinshi and Maomao have a interesting relationship and every conflict they have, even though they can be toxic at times, contributes to their growth. There is no psychiatrist to deal with them, the way traumatized people learn in that era is doing right and wrong. Obs: Maomao fully accepts woman's conditions and she expressed many times that she would have it easier if Jinshi just acted his position and took her. She is the kind who thinks the current system is cruel but it's what works. She expressed he could "use her until she fell apart" because she prefers to be a useful tool than a meaningless burden (?). Maomao was taught to be independent in the hard way because if she didn't take care of herself no one would. What she needs is exactly being more dependent on others. |
