I want to convince someone to watch this anime, but they are willing to watch only one episode to make up their mind. I am thinking of leaving them on a cliffhanger to force them to continue watching and am stuck deciding between episode 3 (Humpty Dumpty), episode 7 (Shake Half), and episode 9 (Sweet Memory (Part 1)). Which episode do you think would be the best to recommend?

If you are looking to get someone into watching this series, I would probably recommend Ep. 2 (the hot chocolate episode). It will either intrigue them based on how it approaches the mundane to investigate the mystery, or totally turn them off of the series. Episode 2 is self-contained, doesn't give much in the way of spoilers and gives a good sense for the series and its approach to the story.

Probably the Osanai vs Kobato cake episode. Ep.6. But there are some episodes that are terrible like ep2 or ep5 so i wouldn't recommend this anime lol. Just recommend him Hyouka as a starting point.

2. It’s the best episode imo since it’s just a standalone mystery. I wish the rest of the series stuck to this more episodic format.

I don't understand the love for the hot chocolate episode. That was the height of pretentiousness in an already pretentious-feeling show, and I was very close to dropping it after that point. The episode was completely pointless and was extremely hard to sit through so early in the season.

Any other episode will do. I would much rather recommend the one with Kobato covering up his cake crimes from Osanai, or the one with the hot sauce cupcakes. Those showcase the tone of the show well, while still being about the characters and a little fun at times.

@perseii Really interesting how differently people react to that episode. I had a completely different feel for the hot chocolate episode. That was the episode that actually perked my interest in the show due to the approach of taking the mundane event (making hot chocolate) and making a mystery of it. Perhaps I enjoyed it because I still think that Kengo was deliberately challenging the MCs to "solve" his mystery to shake Jougorou from his desire for an "ordinary" existence. It was the first inkling that the characters had motivations outside of what their characters showed up front. I still think Ep. 2 is the best to see if someone would be interested in the show. It kind of exemplifies the best and worst traits of the show without giving much up in the way of spoilers. Also the way that Kengo eats his cake was excellent!

I somewhat agree, only in the sense that it's so ridiculous that I would get morbidly curious.

I do think "making hot chocolate with only a spoon" could be interesting, but the whole episode I could not stop thinking, "but WHY does this matter?"

The hot sauce Berliner episode had a small cast of side characters and some interesting implications, such as "why would anyone eat hot sauce then lie about it?" and "what's really wrong with this club?" And the Kobato vs. Osanai cake episode was driven by Kobato's "fear" of Osanai and his "addiction" to dominating people with his intelligence, which is actually strange and says a lot about his character.

The hot chocolate episode had no purpose and no stakes whatsoever, even by Shoushimin standards. I don't think Kengo was testing/provoking Kobato; Kobato just saw a spoon in the sink and went off on his own. To be frank, I don't really care either way, anyway; Kengo is not much of a character or particularly interesting. The solution to the mystery was very uninteresting as well.

Maybe I would've liked the episode better if they just snuck it in later in the season, once we've all gotten more used to its tempo and its characters. If this was the very first episode someone showed me, without prior knowledge of Hyouka, I would've most likely bailed out. And I like mysteries and mundane slice-of-life shows.

Yh yh yh, I get preferences and all, but that's besides the point here. I can tolerate most opinions and co but it's like when u watch something that was like the lowest of the low you've seen in anime and someone tells u it was peak its kind of hard to accept that opinion, is like someone telling u they enjoy killing to a normal activity as a pastime. U can't accept that. That's exactly how i feel when it comes to this show, more or less.

@Cestlavie_ it's just that this show in particular is waaay too subjective than any other.

I think it's because there was no real purpose to solving the mystery that this episode was able to capture Kobato's character the best. Since we get to see his response when his detective pride is put under question. It was really the only mystery in the whole show where I could see him accidentally get too into invested in solving the mystery because it appeared simple at first, but as it got complicated the thrill of the mystery sucked him in. Whereas the rest of the mysteries are either him being forced into it or just forgetting the "how to be ordinary" part of the show. I also like how it gave Kengo this dumb, lazy personality, but he wasn't a focus of the show, so I can see why it ends up not really mattering.

The weird thing is that the show until ep4 is way different from what it is ep5 onwards. Up until ep 4, it actually attempts to tackle the problem of "how to be ordinary," the unordinary aspects of the main characters, and why they have a hard time trying to resolve them. After ep5, it fully commits to a SoL mystery and we see the characters even beginning to embrace their unordinary aspects instead of resolving them. So I guess it also depends on which version of the show you look.

Now this is a bit of a side note, unrelated to what happens in the anime, but this episode was similar to those Youtube brain-teaser mystery videos which are usually pretty bad, but some of them are pretty nice. This episode felt like one of the better ones, with better-presentation and build-up, so it was a relaxing watch for me personally.

As a standalone mystery - the hot chocolate one.

Overall, it has to be ep 10 with the big reveal about Osanai.
