I enjoyed it but it's the angriest I've gotten watching an anime (Ignore quins exist for a sec), alya didn't get any development, the mc steals all the development from her.

@Hickykissy Pretty much this. The characters had no development, the season had no plot or actual story. It was funny when they were bullying Alya, or Yuki acting out, but the rest - with the whole poitless SCP election - was pretty much worthless.

You’re right I feel the majority of people(except for LN readers) who are new to this show felt the same way as well there really was no actual development to any characters in this series except for probably the MC but I really wouldn’t count that as development as his relationship with Alya did not change at all lol and Alya was by far the worst character in this series imo.

Alya will develop much later in the story. The Alya in Volume 1 is a spoilt crybaby princess while the Alya in Volume 9 is going great lengths to support Masachika (and seducing him).

A good 10 episodes and then episode 11 came with Student Council elections plus trying this edgy tryhard villain bs, what a let down.
all it had to do was stick to this cute waifus and developing romance between MC and Alya this needless I am edgy BS just had to happen.

@FairySkies
Season 1 is until volume 3.

Their relationship has progressed a lot. Alya is clinging to Masachika a lot, such as holding hands and refusing to let go in front of Masachika’s family members.

@Eaxillier

In all LN adaptations, they tend to cut a lot of content because the main purpose is to promote the novels. My advice is always start from the start.

The anime adapts 3 volumes.

@FairySkies V1-V3 was S1. I don't see how you came up with the conclusion that their relationship is stagnant after the final scene of Episode 12. People who are saying that Alya didn't get any character development at all are blinded. Only spreading hate towards Alya and rooting for Yuki. They'll have their lips sealed in the first four episodes of S2, mark my words. Anyway, they grew more and more intimate in the LN, and Alya is now wholeheartedly supporting Masachika with his personal struggles - if that's what you wanted to know.

I am so glad someone actually felt angry at alya too. After all that talk about her not liking to be called a princess she sure is a burden to kuze. Always waiting to be saved and easily swayed by the word of others. I'm not reading the ln until i'm convinced that she can actually stand up on her own. She's too dependent on kuze and so quick to give up on things. Thankfully s2 might solve this.

Not liking the whole roshidere thing. It draws me in for sure. Had it continued being a comedy solely focusing on her roshidere i wouldn't mind. But clearly that's not the direction it's going for. After finishing the anime, honestly the roshidere is just an afterthought for me. There are far more interesting things than that in this anime.

@Jakkun S2 will be about Alya's character development and the characters' progression of their interpersonal relationships. It will blow S1 out of the water.

Sorry if you get asked this a lot since you're an LN reader, but I wanted to ask how do you think the adaptation was handled overall? More specifically, how faithfully was it adapted from the LN, and was the anime able to deliver the same impact during the Taniyama debate and the closing ceremony?

I would imagine that the experience of reading the speeches as written dialogue where one can imagine the delivery based on their own image of the characters would be quite different from watching/listening to the speeches which relies heavily on the visuals and voice acting to create the same impact.

@Quadruple_Oi I believe they did an excellent job in the anime adaptation. Which entails to the anime remaining very faithful to its derivative. Adaptation-wise, I would score the anime a 9/10. Judging by the score, one could tell that it is far from being an immaculate adaptation. Us consumers ought to remember that it is an adaptation of its Light Novel, and ergo, it having some cut content would be a given. That's how LN to anime adaptations in general tend to come to be. Roshidere is no exception - to my dismay, might I add.

And to answer your other enquiry, verily, the anime did manage to deliver the same impact during the Alya-Sayaka debate and the closing ceremony speech. Except though - they skipped Masachika's Russian during the closing ceremony, the one moment I was looking forward to being animated the most as an avid LN reader.

During Alya's speech, at a very specific period of time, she gets lost in her thoughts and becomes absentminded. Masachika, sensing his partner feeling conflicted, calls out to her in Russian from one of the stage wings saying “Keep your chin up!”. Alya was understandably shook from this sudden revelation, this she wondered if he practiced Russian just for this moment. I felt quite moved and attached to the characters just for this moment. The emotions I'd felt back then while reading this scene felt quite surreal. Until I'd read V4, this volume was my favorite from the LN, particularly due to this scene. This specific scene was portrayed in the anime via rewinding their past interactions in Alya's mind. The light novel, however, resonated with me on a far deeper level than the anime adaptation of this scene did. The VAs were resplendent and spectacularly played the roles they were assigned with, so I have no complaints in that regard.

So, in essence, yes, the anime did do the LN justice overall. I thoroughly loved the anime adaptation. This is my very first time watching the anime adaptation of something I've read, so it felt very special to me. I even re-read the LN while watching the anime. Watching certain scenes and dialogues unfold just as they were in the light novel; there's just something ethereally comforting about it. It is my first.

I would suggest you to read the light novel.

Oo, wasn't expecting such a thorough answer, much appreciated tho. The cut content makes sense, it's quite difficult to work around that unless they extend the anime's runtime beyond a season which seems difficult given how rarely it occurs.

It's interesting that they chose to change the "Keep your chin up!" scene. It definitely wasn't an issue with the VA's ability to voice the line in Russian since we have already seen him speak Russian with his childhood friend. I suppose they wanted to show us that Alya could pull off her speech entirely on her own which supports the audience's perception that she means it when she wants to become better for the sake of assuming the role of council president. I can see how the LN's version would be much more emotionally impactful though.

I can empathize with the experience of watching anime adaptations of works you've read since I started reading manga/manhwa about 3 years ago, so I've begun seeing the first couple of anime adaptations only recently (over the past year or so). It's similarly endearing to a rewatch where you can pick up interesting bits from character interactions in the context of the bigger picture, combined with the motion of the character expressions added by the anime. Having seen a couple of LN adaptations, I might get into LN reading when I get a break. My first would likely be between this one and CotE since they've intrigued me the most.

@Quadruple_Oi COTE was the very first LN I started reading back in September 15, 2022. Roshidere is 2nd (June 25, 2024). These are the only two novels I've read.
