Anime only, watched till ep 7.

It is my understanding that Will is "climbing the tower" to see the sunset with Elfaria. However, he needs to be a Magia Vander, which means racking up credits, showing off in tournaments, or creating brand-new magic iirc.

But Will can't use magic, which is his whole "trait". Yes, he is strong, if we removed the practical training area, Will would probably be at the top of the school due to being the book learner and farming in the dungeon. But, those skills alone can't help stop the degradation of the huge magic circle at the top of the tower since it probably requires magic to do so...which he does not have.

Couldn't Will have been allowed up the tower by other means and not being a magia vander? Maybe it is because the anime hasn't explained much, but there are other people up in the tower who aren't magia vanders, like Sarissa, who I assume is Elfaria's secretary. Can't Will take on a role like her's instead?

All in all, Will wants to "climb the tower" to see the sunset with Elfaria while having no use whatsoever in maintaining that barrier. It would make sense for everyone else in the school to wonder just what is Will doing in the school.

Will doesn’t need to be a magia vander to climb the tower. He needs to climb the tower to become a magia vander. Essentially the order is school (Get 7200 credits to make it to tower OR get scouted) —> tower —> magia vander. So he can’t just take on a role because he doesn’t have enough credits. he NEEDS to get scouted to make it to the tower and once he does enough in the tower he can become a magia vander.

At this point, I’m just watching till the end of the episodes to make a comment … but so far I don’t think this anime was well thought out

Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

This whole story is so bland it feels like an achievement in it own right. The author probably just thought of a cool setting and a decent premise, but when it came to writing the story they just went "meh, it'll sort itself out somehow."

The characters are cardboard cutouts, and there exist only 4 types of ambition for almost every single character:
- I want to be with Elfie (that's Will)
- I want to be with Will (that's Elfie and Colette)
- I want to help Will because I like him (that's Rostie, Workner and a few others)
- I want to crush Will because I don't like him (that's Sion, Julius and a few others)

Everyone else is a background character with no motivation at all.

If you remove Will from this anime, it instantly just stops existing. There's no point for anyone being in this anime if there's no Will. And this creates a problem, because Will isn't even that likeable. He's a cardboard cutout goodie-two-shoes with no real personality or complexity to his character. He's just boring, and that makes the rest of the cast boring by association.

I don't know what the deal with the Elves is, but if their only ambition is to get into the tower, than that's not an ambition at all. Everyone wants to get into the tower, and that makes it a plot device, not a personality trait. The only times I remember that Elves even exist in this world, is when they're literally shown on screen, that's how bland they are.

This anime is so flat it it should be part of the SI measurement system to denote perfect flatness.

I can't help but agree with everything you said there. I feel there's a lot more world-building and redeeming character traits in Mashle compared to this. The only reason I'm sticking around with watching this is to see how Will overcomes the challenges he faces in that school, and if he eventually gets scouted and makes it to the tower. But yeah, he's definitely not all that likable himself, so it does make this viewing rather difficult 😵‍💫

My guess right now is that somehow Will will proove that magic isn't everything, and the higher-ups will allow Will and future people like him who can't do magic to also become magia vender.

I have a feeling Will's role will be much bigger than the tower. If anyone has read the manga, let me know if I'm close. Here's the show as I understand it. That world faced a powerful enemy, so they created some kind of barrier to protect themselves. The main purpose of the tower and the magia vander is to maintain that barrier. Problem is, this is a flawed and temporary measure. The flaws are a result of the fact that they rely on magic for everything. That world is completely devoid of warriors, and that's why they couldn't achieve actual victory over the enemy. I think the time will come when the tower fails, and Will will be the key factor in winning. This is all just my guess though about where the story is ultimately going.

I thinkt he proble is everyone want s a over powered "cool" MC. yes the story could have been better written but for a basic story it has plenty of ways it could develop. From him fighting to climbing the tower, to him entering tower plus the outside threat of the celestial host. I think it was mostly meant to be a "action" story not a "story" driven type of show. so if you don't like the action then why continue to watch or come and say how bad something it is because it doesn't fit your standards

If it weren't for Julius, Will would have never made the show he displayed during ep 6-7.

- Secretary: The secretary position is basically being second in command for the faction so they should be really powerful magic users themselves (the elves who casted those giant reality marble at the tournament), the magia vanders cant exactly just hire random ppl, let alone Will who hasnt even graduated high school

Also i think Will doesn’t just want to physically be with Elfie, he wants to stand by her side as am equal and become strong enough to support and protect her, hence becoming a magia vander

- The magic circle: While it is important, in the end it’s just a mean to delay the apocalypse, the magia vander arent just there to hold up the sky, they are to fight against the alien invaders when the opportunity come

Despite what he said at the end PverLord already pointed out that getting enough credit is enough to get inside the tower. Will didnt get scouted, but whether he’s able to get enough credit or not or graduate through other means mentioned, hopefully we’ll see it by the end of ss1
