Would you rather:
Fight the real Frieren or the replicated Frieren?

I would like to be a little more like Frieren and Fern. I mean I would like to enjoy various things but not become blinded by ambitions to achieve great things. I believe that if I was less entrenched in my pursuits, I would probably succeed with more ease. However, my inner sight is blurred by my passions or frenzy. It is not as crystal clear as that of Frieren and Fern who have more tranquility in their hearts.

Thus begins the second test, nothing like a good old dungeon crawl! Wonder who's the one controlling all those doubles?
I'm Bruneian and I like anime. And Manchester United. And fat cats.

What an exciting episode!
I feel like this episode has been the only one about the 1st class mage exam that really felt like an usual Frieren episode (last episode was a typical Frieren Episode, but it wasn't really about the exam, so I'm talking about the other episodes about this arc besides the last one).
I enjoyed how in this test they no one needs to die, which makes much more sense, since losing such a talented mage would be harmful for the kingdom. But it was quite shocking how fast one can get killed in that dungeon, like the female mage that got trapped in that spikey wall thing, thankfully the escape bottle worked, and she was able to escape, although failing the exam. But I found it cool that she gave them that, exactly so that no one dies in that exam, a big contrast to the previous examiner.
Frieren and Fern exploring the dungeon was wholesome, and Fern saying she keeps on pursuing magic, because it makes Frieren happy, and therefore, also makes her happy was so cute!
The clones were also really cool, but also terrifying, because now Denken will need to defeat a Frieren clone, and I'm not too sure if that's ending up well. The way he said if that wasn't an exam he would have broken the bottle.
Really curious how this will turn out!

Loved this episode, really felt like Frieren, but with more action than usual! Also, I wonder what happened to Kanne and Lewine, and also Ubel, since they were barely shown in this episode.

Edit: Also, we can't forget the iconic mimic scene with Frieren, we finally got one in the present!

This show has no consistency... sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
So now in Part 2 of this Mage Test, Frieren is a dungeon crawl....
Blond mage chick we never met before explains the rules of the dungeon crawl, and gives them some jar with a golem they can use to escape, then tells them they have until the NEXT MORNING to get "to the bottom" of the dungeon. Hasn't told them how far it is, and so what happens next? "Okay let's get moving! We only have a few hours!" and they all charge into the cave right! ?

NOPE. Everyone sits around and talks!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!
Part of the discussion is the bearded guy proposing they all work together to get to the bottom.... but whatever, they all gradually make their way lazily into the dungeon, unhurried and unworried.

In spite of this show's insistence on such dumb decisions, there are some good points:

The use of Checkov's gun was actually effective. We see the insta-golem a few scenes later when one of the girls messes up and gets trapped. The worries the characters discuss on the way in get answered in the following scenes. So it makes it all the more frustrating how slowly everyone moves all the time, and how persistently the dialogue and the slow movement drains the energy from this show......
The proctor chick decides to be the one breaking the 4th wall this time by asking why Fern lacks any kind of PASSION. For the 2nd time in as many episodes another character in this show asks the other why they are so boring. Fern doesn't give a very convincing answer, no surprises there.

I will say that the Old Mage's proposal of working together getting rejected is valid. If I were in that competition (my shorts would definitely be at least as short as that red haired chick's) and someone tried to propose working together, I'd tell them to go pound salt too. Never let anyone try to control you.
Following someone else into a trial like that, the next thing is they're telling you what to do. Nope. Fuck off asshole, you're on your own. When he was lamenting they should have worked together blah blah blah I figured they were setting up something for later, but he needs to let it go because it's a stupid idea.

The levels of absurdly good this show gets to in the home stretch, ridiculous. It's like they were toying with us before, but now it's a real threat.

These rules are so true to Dark Souls, you really should explore the entire area first, and there's been some dungeons in that one for sure.

I guess that goes for puzzles in general, explore all there is before making conclusions.

It's nice that this story is feminine while also showing reverence for everything else. It shows at that particular skills fit certain individuals.

Boy this final run will make you hunger for a S2.

The second trial is starting and there's some clone goofiness going on. Frieren and her group is progressing quite well. Same with the old man.
