I really like how much better handled May was than Misty

Just finished watching AG again, I can see why May became more popular than Misty back in the day and why the writers decided to not bring Misty back to the main cast.

The writers actually learned to develop a character, having her own arc and develop over the series alongside Ash. May has a lot of fun moments, funny interactions and great development with her rivals and Pokemon. It seems the writers understood Misty hardly did anything especially in Johto so making a more important female lead with motivation from the start worked well. Togepi drained away Misty's character and left her as an egg holder most of the time.

I guess May went on to be remembered as one of the most popular characters in the series even 20 years later.

May was a real good character for reason above I personally like dawn as a character more and Serena but may does have more development than both imo

While May was a more rounded character, nostalgia for season 1 keeps Misty in a special place in my heart. I do like that May has coordination to make her as more than just a side character.
