@Asukadesuuuu

each episode is almost like a new story, so new characters and it doesn't always end well, so yes, for me it is sad...

Fun fact: Not only all characters in this anime (aside from the demons) were real living people in the past but even the poetry contest this episode tells us about really happened in 960 with exactly the same result as in the anime. Taira no Kanemori won the contest because Emperor Murakami favoured his poem, while it is told in a later collection of parables that the other poet Mibu no Tadami died of depression and anorexia after losing the contest. This anime heavily draws from history.

Because we know it happened in 960 we can even tell that Abe no Seimei was 39 years old around this time.

Both of the two poems are in the classical japanese anthology called Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, exactly the same anthology from which one of the karuta decks (Uta-garuta) takes their one hundred poems. That means these two poems most likely were recited in the anime Chihayafuru as well.

...

I looked it up and yes, as it turned out, they both were recited in Chihayafuru in the episodes 9, 27 and 39.

忍ぶれど 色に出でにけり わが恋は 物や思ふと 人の問ふまで
Since I could not hide my love, people would always ask if I was pining for someone.

恋すてふ わが名はまだき 立ちにけり 人知れずこそ 思ひそめしか
As my love first came to realization, word had already spread.

@Ishitateso I suspected it was based on history but not to such extent! Ngl I cried a little watching the episode, maybe partly because I had a bad day and partly because I am a crybaby.

I wish people weren't sleeping on this gem

@Baranka02 Never mind getting a bit emotional, that makes whatever you watched more memorable. I envy your reaction a bit.

And yes, it is strange to see how empty the discussion threads of this anime are.

@Ishitateso Oh my, that's amazing for you to notice. I did feel like the poem sounded a bit similar, that is because I listened to 100 poems full version after reading Chihayafuru!
That's very observant of you. Thanks for sharing
