As a major fan of mystery psychological type of story (Also watching them outside the scope of anime) especially when I also love Monster. Pluto feels underwhelming and I don't think it's the atmosphere or theme's fault. I think it falls down to how the mystery is handled. Robots having human emotions with a human life is a great concept (Knowing it's based on Astroboy) and I am go for it since the writer of Pluto is Naoki Uruzawa who wrote Monster (Also waiting for adaptation of 20th Century Boys if it will have in the future).

But my main issue in Pluto is the script. That the questions thrown given to us as a watcher feels like it is really not a question that will make us think too hard for an answer. It didn't really confuse me but it is getting to the point that even if I want to care and engage to the story and its characters, I can't. I guess I also have that problem with Monster as well but it didn't bother me that much maybe because of the atmosphere, the story, the pacing, the characters, and the main antagonist which is fascinating. The pacing also didn't bother me on Pluto but will I expect that episode 8 will make me feel that this series is better than I thought?

Edit: Looks like I've found the right word, it feels "rushed" and it has the potential to be a bit better in terms of psychological (already good) and mystery aspect (which needs improvement)

The atmosphere is actually there in this adaptation and the anime is well done but the story feels like it's better if it's longer than what we've got to better flesh out the foreshadowing, the story, building attachment to the characters, etc.

your account makes this seem like such a bait but if you're serious then tbh it is probably just not for you. i enjoyed it a lot and i think most people did by looking at the score.

You definitely not alone in thinking that but also definitely in the small minority. In terms of the mystery aspect it’s definitely not as good as 20thcb or monster but what really carries this anime for me are the characters. Also episode 8 is the weakest episode imo so it probably won’t change your opinion.

@SparCy Yeah! I also noticed that Pluto is a character-driven type of story and I also think Gesicht is a complex character going through character developments (I got sad in episode 6 🥺). The story I may say feels consistent but the mystery aspect, the questions and answers thrown, and how they were thrown feels like they are just spoonfeeding us these information without making us viewers question it. Thanks for the answer, I won't expect much at the episode 8 haha

@alfsta Actually, the enjoyment is still there haha.. I enjoy it but the mystery aspect of the story didn't really make me feel fascinated or truly invest in the story. I think it's because I have high expectation. But why did you even think that my account is like a bait? HAHAHAHA... I actually enjoy some parts and I'm not hating this series.

your account has nothing on it and often people create random accounts just to start arguments by saying something is bad or saying something negative about an anime most enjoy. not saying that is what your doing but it just kinda seemed like it at first glance as you see it happen a lot. as long as you can agree that episode 2 was a masterpiece lol i have no issues with what your saying as we all like different things.

I'll add this comment to my original post since I have found the right words to what I feel.

Looks like I've found the right word, it feels "rushed" and it has the potential to be a bit better in terms of psychological (already good) and mystery aspect (which needs improvement)

I actually enjoy the pacing the way it is, especially considering how the Monster anime despite being good, had me feeling burnt out in the past for how long it went with some episodes feeling stagnant enough to make me lose interest in it a bit despite knowing the potential the series and some of its characters had. It's interesting, it's not stretched out in number of episodes and for each episode that is 1 hour long, it feels like watching a mini-movie with plenty of subplots that do not feel too farfetched or distant besides the first episode for a good while from the 5 that I have seen so far, and that part with North No. 2 was great.

I actually think that Pluto is not rushed and does not need to be any longer than it already is. It very well maintains the intense pace of the narrative and never falls into unnecessary dragging or self-repetition, which have always been the main problems of even the most brilliant Urasawa's works.

Apart from Episode 8, it was a really good anime with some really good complex characters as well but above all the concept of humans and robots living together as equals in society is what gets you thinking

its urasawas worst manga (that ive read) but it still has a lot of merit, the plot is great, the twists feel earned but because it has to stay faithful to the source materials established lore and canon it kinda gets held back, i feel like as a detective story its not the best but as a thriller it suceeds in every way

Urasawa is completely incapable of detective work. The whole mystery was solved by the fact that Gesicht accidentally meets “people” who have the information he needs. First, a person with a video, then a Ali who knows the robot from a photo, how convenient. Gesicht didn’t look for them, they looked for him themselves and gave him information that he didn’t even ask them. Detective elements is horribly done.

Plot conveniences and contrivances seems to be the biggest weakness of Urasawa as a writer unfortunately. He has good ideas but his works always falls short in their execution.

You probably are a part of minority for sure.
You looking at it from the wrong pic I guess.
I feel it’s a more character driven story than plot driven story.
The plot in itself is really a commentary on many complex topics such as emotions, human nature and behaviour, impact of wars and related PTSD, US invasion of Iraq and its global impacts (the darker truer side of it).
It’s not really supposed to be a murder mystery right?
Instead make you think about the aforementioned topics.

No, you are surely not the only one who doesn't enjoy this show. It is not a flawless show and I can imagine viewers who might watch it, despite not enjoying it as much as they thought they would. Even if they would be a minority of the Pluto's audience.

That being said, while I myself enjoyed Pluto a lot, I get what you mean. Although, it's one of those concepts one may enjoy and one may not, depending on their expectations. You mustn't forget that it's based on the Astro Boy franchise, and serves as a mature retelling of its final story arc (at least I've been told it's the final one, lol). That's why it shouldn't be surprising to see stuff typical for shounen-like storytelling in an oldschool, Osamu Tezuka style way, intertwining with writing typical for Naoki Urusawa's manga. After all, Naoki Urusawa wouldn't make this manga if there wasn't an already existing story created by Osamu Tezuka.

What's more, it's important to approach this show in a certain way. I mean, you can do it in a different way, sure. But like @ANR23 has mentioned, Pluto shines as a series focused on two things: character driven story, and commentary (even if brief) on both many futuristic concepts that surely will emerge one day, as the technology develops even further, as well as more universal subjects (PTSD, trauma, corrupted politicians).

Not to spoil anything, ep. 8 most likely won't change your view on this show. It might even worsen it further, even if a little. I hope it won't, but well... the odds are rather in favor of it making this show feel more rushed and simplified, if you didn't like the elements from the original post.

No you are not the only one.

They try to hard to make the robots seems like humans.
My biggest issue i have with this show is the simple fact that HMM robots can be repaired, and in this show a robot has a pulse and when it stops he is dead.
what? how does that even make sense? is his head made of capacitors or RAM and when he stops working for a few seconds his brain get's wiped out?

I mean, dude, you can copy a program and upload it to a knew body, its not that hard.
Unless his head is totally destroyed it should work just fine if you plut it to a new body. You know what i mean right?

And you know what more?
If you are a genius making robots, you can also maybe make BACKUPS? right? maybe just upload his self to some alternative cloud i mean, right?

With modern science and current technology this robot theme is so outdated, it's not even funny.
Maybe in 1950, thinking that a robot have a pulse or something would made sense, but in 2023? this show doesn't make sense.

The whole SCI-FI setting for this doesn't work, and this breaks the immersion of this show. It's bad, it simply terrible, unless you ignore the modern world and reality and think of this show as a new term of robots, that doesn't align with todays terms it might maybe work.

Also, what the point of children robots?
I can't take this show seriously it's a joke.

This part generally cheapened the metaphor, I think. Atom looks like a child because Tenma wanted to rebuild his dead son. Makes sense. But then there's just regular robots out there that get adopted as children and do...what? Like, why would a flower selling street urchin robot like Ali exist at all? And they're just kids forever or do they grow up?

I feel like there is an answer like: "They want robots to copy humans and learn so they can use it going forward" but does that mean that they just use the data for next-gen robots? That kind of cheapens the growth metaphor again and really doesn't make much sense. Also, making useless baby robots seems like a weird way to do that especially if that would be based on limited programming.

I think "Why don't they just repair the super robots" is one question that is actually addressed because making truly conscious robots seems to require injecting emotions that might fuck them up. Montblanc and North 2 and the other lightly developed super robots might've got that from the war or something its not exactly clear how they became the super robots but I don't personally have beef with that part of the show.

@LotteGiants Nah even the emotions dont explain shit in this case.
As they are robots you can perfectly copy them to a cloud or something, every single value stored in thier logic can be just copied.
Sure, you can argue it won't be the same "monk BLANKE", but then what? is it better to let him be dead?
I Find it better to resurrect him even if he would be slightly off.

That is Gesicht has been going to "repairs" constantly right? they can at that moment take a snapshot of everything in Gesicht mind, and just save it.
Then if he is dead, they can rebuild him and "rewind" him to his past state when he was last at repair shop, and probably install his memories into the "new" gesicht, so he is up to date.

But alas, for some reason, they dont explain anything about it.
I find it hard to believe that if the same process was possible for humans, then people that lost their loved once woudn't want to "resurrect" their loved once even if they are not 100% the same.
And then you can philosophically argue if this is really the same person but again? Who cares?
It either the same one, hence you saved him, or it doesn't and there is no way yo know which is which.

-------------------

As i already concluded the story would have made more sense if the robots were actually not robots at all, if they were bio enginired humans for instance, that were like "slaves" up until this point.
The only thing that would need to be "fixed" in this setting is the "main" vilian as he is suppose to be

Also, they can just say that the "bio enginired" humans were made in a way that prevents them to lie and have "extreme" emotions.
And then, everything actually becomes fine.

Expect that the story is weak even with the robot bullshit.

@Adnash Watched the last episode. Yep, didn't change my view on this show but it didn't made it worse. Damn! There's a lot of things going on in Episode 8 but it made me love Pluto more than it was before (Not going to be on my top 10 list but it is still leagues on its own)

Still feels rushed since the pacing is too fast but I still enjoy it and I didn't regret watching this anime.

@Jupi-Jup Agree with you. This is so far the worst Urasawa's story. The story is constrained because of the Astro Boy collab. A lot of things don't make sense. Why robots need to be able to cry? Why can't they backup the robots data? And yeah the pulse is so funny, Ochanomizu trying his best to fix the robot before the pulse stopped. I was like, What?? Do robots have heart? Can you just recharge it again lol. Why did it die? If aging components were the problem, then just replace the components? Can't find the components online? Just custom make it? Even nowadays we have 3D printers to replace old parts. Robots are not like humans that can't replace its parts right?

AI no Idenshi gives better insight of human-robot problems than this anime did.

--------------

Outside of that I really like Gesicht's story. It's best part of the story.

The mystery aspect and the way the information has been delivered was definitely the weakest part of the show. I didn't like how the true antagonist was revealed, I don't think they made it clear enough or just spreaded the information on it too sparsely throughout the show. I love the themes it explored so I gave it an 8/10, if I liked the mystery aspect more it'd be a 9
