If I can describe one major part of why Yuichiro Hayashi and his team were able to enhance these Rumbling scenes in the anime, it would be how they show human behaviour in an apocalyptic scenario. Let me list the anime-original scenes that show these behaviours.

  • A couple (Grisha's parents) locked in a confined space accepting their fate, embracing each other in their last moments.
  • People like that woman or the mother and 2 kids, wailing in despair.
  • 3 men using the ensuing chaos as a chance to steal things from shops.
  • One of my favourite additions: A group of people running as they see a car driven faster by a guy. These people pulled that guy out as they desperately tried latching on to that car to get away from the Titans, but in doing so slowed the car down because of the chaos.
  • A large group of people trying to fit in a train (who knows if that train is going to move or not) with a cramped space. Judging from that it's likely that some people are going to get crushed to death by other people.
  • A guy, knowing that he's gonna die eventually, shoots himself to end it quickly.
  • A tribe, likely isolated from civilisation, standing still as they look at the Titans, probably in shock.

I honestly don't think anyone can genuinely disagree with this.

Some probably still would but they would be bieng disingenuous at best.

Before the Rumbling arc was adapted. Everyone kept saying how difficult it would be. Just the sheer scope of it.

And Team Hayashi delivered well beyond expectations. He made the Rumbling feel even more tragic and apocalyptic than the Manga.

The addition of Eren's Grandparents, woman crying with Children, Guy committing suicide, trees catching on fire(I don't remember this bieng in Manga), people literally burning to death. And in the Finale Cliff scene making everything Black and White and making it so that the baby is passed to safety while people are still falling from the Cliff.
All of it was just inspired.

Some people here still say that WiT would have done better.
But I truly believe they couldn't have done it better than Team Hayashi.

Not only because WIT always had trouble animating the Collosal Titan. Or using good CGI.(I honestly don't know how WIT could have depicted Eren's Founding Titan without CGI).

But also because of the human element. From what I remember WIT always had a bit of a problem with large crowd scenes.
Their large crowd scenes would either be static images or have minimum animation.
I don't think they could have delivered on the human elements of the Rumbling.

Which is all just a simpler way of saying Team Hayashi went above and Beyond for the Final 2 Specials and delivered the best anyone could.

A few scenes were added in the special 2 aswell, they were all great additions and I wasn't dissapointed a bit. I think the rumbling was better portrayed in special 1, but that's natural considering that special was all about the rumbling and special 2 was about the battle of heaven and earth. Team Hayashi absolutely nailed it.

Your analysis makes sense. Also, the slow motion scenes of wit weren't that great, whenever there were some scenes of a large number of people running, they just flashed a few scenes with a vibrating camera and a speed effect.

@MonsterSkas Exactly. Their large crowd scenes were mostly still images with like camera motion or lines to indicate movement or like still images with one character moving in the Forground

WIT was absolutely great at action Sequences.

But as soon as it came to character animations they were very limited.

And even their action was limited to a certain scale.
They never could nail the Collosal Titan. And even their Rod Reiss Titan was mostly really bad looking CGI.

I didn't mind the Rod Reiss titan CGI all that much, but what looked absolutely goofy was the colossal titan. The colossal titan is supposed to be horrific, terrifying, supermassive, have a lot of weight, and look scary. The only time wit's colossal matched all those points was when the colossal gave its first appearance and raised its head (the suspense in that scene was just fantastic), but then, it, just didn't have that intensity. Their 2D colossal looked like a stick figure when it moved, and their 3D colossal didn't have any weight nor any of those points, but I liked its transformation scene in season 3 part 2. Mappa tho nailed the colossal titan, everything from their designs to the way they moved were absolutely horrible horrible horrible (in a good way).

Most of the final 10 chapters were enhanced by the anime.

Hange's death was basically a non-event in the manga, really anti-climactic. It was a few panels of her taking out a few Colossals at most and then going down. MAPPA gave her at least 2-3 minutes of build-up and then 1-2 minutes of great animation, a banger OST and a great send-off.

The Rumbling on Marley was one of the best episodes of the entire series. Great job by the animators and Hayashi.

For sure, they really went all out in adding little details and moments that got across how horrifying and tragic the Rumbling was. We saw a wide spectrum of human behaviors that were realistic, most people panicked and were trying to save themselves, some broke down in tears, and others simply accepted their fate. One nit-pick I have is that I wish we saw more wildlife getting affected. The one shot of the giraffes was a great addition and got me excited, but that was all we got. It shows that Eren's decision is effecting much more than just human civilization, entire species and wildlife are getting wiped out as well.
Are ya winning, diners?
