So... it was another AI that was working with the president, knew a shit ton about everything to do.... something?

It was pretty much the only part that made think, "oh yeah this is just a reimagining of a singular arc of a bigger story".

What I'm confused by, is the fact that he seemed very useless to the plot, to the point where I'm not sure what he was even in the story for.

Like, the story framed like "the whole 7 robots dying, and end of humanity" thing was all the bear's plan.... but he didn't do anything about it. he just kinda knew it was happening.

and then baru having a change of tone on atom, felt a bit off, but It implied that they were friends before, so at first it made sense to me.

but then he somehow escaped and attacked the bear because he had a fairly big change of heart, and now I'm just confused.

I am pretty certain this all makes sense withing the context of the entire astro boy manga. but since urasawa was only recreating this arc, I can't help but wonder what was even the point of it, beyond slightly confusing the audience.

It's pretty much the only thing I disliked about the show. everything else was to me at least perfect.

and it's a very small issue that takes away nothing, but it just seemed so weird.

If someone can give me a bit more info on this whole thing, I will be immensely grateful.

The bear is an AI supercomputer behind all of the events.

He was manipulating the president of Thracia from the beginning, causing the war and Persia’s downfall.

His plan was to subjugate all humans

His name is Dr. Roosevelt. He was manipulating the King of Thracia to kill all the powerful robots in the world so he could subjugate the human race. He was a dastard mastermind pulling the strings.
