I've only seen the original FLCL, not progressive or alternative. Would I be missing anything when I watch this?

Judging from the first episode it seems 1 character from alternative will be a side character in this. I don't know how important they'll be to the story but you should be able to watch it. A few things about that character's backstory might not make sense but I think you could just watch this. But if you want to fully understand the series then you should watch at least alternative. maybe progressive too but that might not be necessary.
