Shinji used lightning rod to attract both attacks and keep Nanase alive. Still kinda nonsensical since she disappeared anyway and that part wasn’t explained, but I’d assume, like all the asspulls in that show, that it was “all part of Hiroto’s genius plan.”

To be honest I like to know also, Liar Liar made zero sense. You figured as much cheating and disregarding any rules everyone would of been disqualified at the end

They said lightning rod but didn't explain further which led me to think they have explained it in the last episode but I didn't bother checking.

shinji used an hability that changes the target of one hability so he took almost all the damage,and i guess the main character used one of the star powers to make it seem like she died
