Personally, I find the first movie way better than this, except for some parts of this movie, mainly because the show excels at highlighting Violet's journey and how she connects people through her letters. With this in mind, the series places us under the assumption that Violet is progressively moving on and developing her character. Going back and focusing on her "love story" is just not my thing. What are your thoughts?

Same, not really a fan of this film, I felt it tried to milk of episode 10 a bit too much ,and the whole Gilbert thing just felt like it regressed Violet's character cause before then she finally moved on.

I prefer the second movie by far as I love how it is the happy ending that violet deserved. It also has a sad side story which in my opinion was executed perfectly. The direction of the ending which had left more questions than answers, and people just assume the relationship was a romantic one although never confirmed in the anime. The open ending leaves things up to interpretation which makes the ending all the more special and leaving you begging for more. Where as I can say the first move was simply a side story. Which wasn’t bad in anyway it was just not nearly as impactful as the second movie.

I actually liked how it tied epsiode 10’s plot line back into the story, and yes Gil reasoning is questionable but I still kinda got where he was coming from. The reunion was super sappy which I kinda prefer, and the rest you fill in the gaps.

I know some would have preferred 45min of Violet & Gil slice of life though

They played it safe with how they concluded Violet Evergarden and the whole Gilbert mystery which I respect, uproar was bound to happen but can't satisfy everyone equally yk. I was very connected emotionally with this movie, hell it was even in 4K which made it the most visually stunning anime ever

Gaiden felt like an alright OVA to be frank York was kinda annoying and predictable, Bartlett was more enjoyable to follow

I also am not a fan of the second movie, while I really loved the Gaiden movie. The biggest reason why I loved Gaiden is because Isabella story was flashed out much more detailed, makes more sense, and is more emotionally attaching than Gilbert's story in the second movie. The Gaiden movie is much more focused on the main story arc, while the second movie keeps on shifting between one arc ( Gilbert) and another ( the boy). The story about the boy who has cancer feels really unrelated to the main story arc about Violet-Gilbert, and it keeps disrupting the pace of storytelling for what's the most important part of the story. To me it seems like that KyoAni could not write a 2 hours script on Gilbert-Violet story arc only and have to fill in the gaps by forcing in another arc, but to me that only means that you are having two unrelated, and not in depth arcs in the movie all together. Gilbert's reasoning for hiding away from Violet and the transitioning of his mind set in the movie feels very rushed and unexplained. Very little moments on explaining what Gilbert is really thinking about. I personally will prefer a 1 hour 30-minute movie, focusing on Violet and Gilbert only, further developing their relationships and giving us more insights into what Gilbert is really thinking about. The ending was happy and great, but the events that led up to it were all very flawed.

I thought at the end of the movie didn't he put a ring onto her left ring finger? I personally take that scene to be saying both of them are married at the end.

I absolutely agree! I feel the movie should’ve been about her finding him and deciding to move in with her life and part ways with him. Instead she stays with him on this island in the middle of nowhere.

i personally prefer this movie. it just feels way more satisfying to watch and like an actual Violet Evergarden movie and i find it to be a beautiful conclusion to this story. i understand some may disagree with Gilbert coming back into the picture but i personally find it really fitting that Violet's story about understanding others and the meaning of love and relationships and how powerful these feelings are ends with her reuniting with the one who kind of indirectly sent her on this journey now with all the development she went through and the scene at the end with her being able to express what she feels and understanding what Gilbert meant it just... elevated the entire series for me a lot and it made me cry even more than the rest of the series combined somehow, it just felt so earned.

i also love the other movie, but it is not anything groundbreaking for the formula of the show or Violet's character. to me it felt like a long episode of the show, a great episode, but not anything new from Violet Evergarden.

i may be biased but the feeling of closure i got from this movie is what made me rate it as a 10/10.

As much as I love the movie, I'm leaning towards Gaiden. I'm a particular sucker for emotional and heartfelt films.

The relationship between Taylor and Isabella got me invested because of not only their backstory how they were both victims of poverty (Correct me if I'm wrong, memory is a little rusty) but how they reminiscent on their time together and the impact one had on the other. The way Violet reconnects and reunites the two together with letters despite the physical distance like how she has with so many others is both heartwarming and bittersweet. From Isabella opening up to Violet during their time in the school to Taylor being able to convey what she's wanted to say and her feelings towards Isabella in the form of a letter, it kind of punched me right in the face with the fist being labeled "P A I N".

I probably explained this poorly or something, but I'm not that good at explaining in general so forgive me

The second movie seemed unnecessary, at least the parts involving Gilbert. By the end of the tv series she had moved on and said her goodbyes to a deceased Gilbert through a letter which she was unable to do the the beginning. He was her only family to her in the beginning, but she was able to form new friends and family-like connections with her coworkers at the office and other automemory dolls in school. But as others pointed out they backtracked her growth resetting her dependency on Gilbert and in the end leaving behind all her new friends and family to live on a isolated island with Gilbert.

tbh, the way they ended things here was quite cliche. maybe im just not a fan of their reunion and how gilbert's character was not given proper characterization.

This is what I was exactly thinking about. If they separated the two arcs in this movie, one for the young boy and the other between Violet and Gilbert, it would have been way better.

The first movie was able to properly flesh out the relationship between Taylor and Amy, unlike in this movie where Gilbert was given a time limit to introduce his character. Also, the series kind of hints that it's about Violet moving on in life and learning how to live without Gilbert, having a last minute miracle on Gilbert's whereabouts was just annoying tbh.

I love both. I think the second movie has higher peaks, but the first is a LOT less rough around the edges.

You are right after I checked it again. But I know in light novels they are married for sure. And I feel like that the last scene in the movie was too obvious, suggesting the two ended up together romantically. Maybe you think otherwise, but assuming the movie follows the light novel, they developed a romantic relationship and married each other.
