[spoiler] Riku's death [/spoiler]

I just finished reading this manga, and while the ending was satisfactory, I felt Riku's death was very avoidable.

The poison meant they had very limited time, and I think if anyone were to be sacrificed then Riku was probably the best choice.
However, there was a way they could all escape with no deaths.

Two plans:
1) If Haju had a knife on her, which we do see multiple times throughout the manga, then surely she could cut off the (main villains name), leg/ limbs off, then chuck it down the hole, and surely that would be enough weight to allow everyone to escape.
This may not work, as time is limited and with a pocket knife or scissors cutting a leg off would be very time consuming.

2) Think outside the box here, what was in the final test room that could act as a weight? Only things were the dead corpse and the girls. But wait! They were all wearing clothes, all 4 of them, which would probably weigh a decent amount, as well as their shoes.
Bundle the clothes together into the hole, and leave.
This plan was very easy and not time consuming, as well as me myself coming up with it in under 2 minutes after finishing the chapter.

I know the point of Riku's sacrifice was meant to show him being decisive, however this was avoidable, even with poison gas.
