Seiya is my type of character: calm and smart type. But one thing I hate about him is his excessive attachment to Minato. I don’t like when a character clings to other person especially if that ‘other person’ doesn’t share the same level of sentiment. To me it looks pitiful. The problem is KyoAni loves using this formula. Takehaya Seiya and Tachibana Makoto share many similarities. Both Seiya (Tsurune) and Makoto (Free!) are MC’s longest and closest friend, they live next door to MC’s house, they are the captains of the club, they started the sport because of MC, and both waited faithfully for MC to comeback at the beginning of the series. To put it simply, they are the childhood best friend aka the loyal sidekicks.
At some point, both were agonized when they were asked if they really love the sport or they just doing it because of MC. In Makoto’s case, after some time agonizing and fighting with Haruka, he realised that he loves swimming as much as he wants to swim together with his best friend. That was during middle high school. Then in high school, he found another purpose: he wants to become swimming teacher/sport trainer. Personally I love Makoto’s development because he actually found what he wants to do at the end, not just following Haruka’s footsteps forever. On the other hand, although Haruka is poker face most of the time, surprisingly he was observant enough to notice changes in Makoto’s behavior at one glance. So somehow I feel their friendship is equal.
However I can’t say the same about Seiya. When he was asked whether he loves archery or not, he quickly answered that he doesn’t know. In the end, we never really know whether Seiya really loves archery or not. All I know is that he only cares about Minato, constantly looking at Minato’s face/reactions as if reading his mood. Unfortunately, Minato doesn’t nearly pay attention as much about him, as he didn’t even notice that Seiya was acting weird. Instead, it was Kaito who noticed, followed by Ryouhei and Masa-san. LOL. So much for bestie 😂
Anyway, I’m not trying to blame Minato. Rather, I was hoping for more character development from Seiya: stop clinging to someone but for him to actually find a goal or reason to continue archery just like Makoto did.
