I've never really been a big fan of this arc but at least in the manga, it felt like It was much shorter. I just don't understand or maybe can't relate to the central conflict at all. What part of Miyuki was he desperate to hide? What parts of him have been revealed to the audience that we'll see in the future? Idk it seemed a bit too extravagant for me. Hey, but at least they made up.
Anyway, I'm just a bit bummed that there wasn't much of a focus on Ishigami whose arc is far more interesting IMO. I certainly hope all of it will be shown in season 4. Also, can we talk about how the anime butchered Papagane's monologue? I feel like that part came out rushed although it is a very important scene. It felt like they were trying to cram in a bunch of scenes at the end.
Which part is Shirogane trying to hide? The part of him that sucks at everything. And we the viewers should know this from season 1, he sucks at vollyball, so chika has to teach him, he sucks at dancing, so chika has to teach him, he sucks at singing, so chika has to teach him, and so on.
And everytime there is one thing in common, he works his ass off to learn all these skills.
However all this time it was mostly implied he was naturally good in his studies and bad at everything else, turns out even that he manages by studying day and night sacrificing his sleep.
There is a deleted chapter in the manga, its during season 1, during the event where the French students came to their academy. Kaguya notices he is using earphones and assumes he is listening to music to relax, only to find out that he is actually listening to French lessons in his free time.
Kaguya on the other hand is naturally good at everything, it's not much hardwork, simply natural talent (take her archery for example). To Shirogane, in order to be seen by kaguya he has to become equal to her, but he doesn't have the natural talent like her, so he has work hard, and moment he stops working hard, his "mask" will fall. He cannot show Kaguya that is actually incompetent, he will fake it till he makes it. The last time he failed at something miserably his mother left him and took his sister with her(he blames himself for her mother leaving, even if it's not true).
That is what Shirogane is trying to hide, he is trying to achieve perfection ALL the time, and as Kaguya points it, he doesn't need to be perfect at everything and just like how Kaguya has a bad personality which Shirogane doesn't mind, Kaguya also doesn't mind that Shirogane is not good at a lot of things.
I genuinely forgot about all that Shirogane stuff. Nice analysis. It makes a bit more sense to me now. But I don't see how he becomes less of a perfectionist after this arc and even then, those things that he was bad at were still used for comedic purposes even after this current arc. I guess it was all about him being more open with Kaguya about his insecurities. I've never thought that he was so fazed by them to the point where he thinks he has to look and act perfect for Kaguya to accept him. That's why I was so confused as to why he was saying all those stuff.
