An excellent premiere!

I thought the writing was good, with two cool, engaging characters. The setup, with the failed executions and the discussions between Gabimaru and Sagiri was really nice. I enjoyed the last scene immensely! I'm already so invested in Gabimaru's marriage; I hope he meets his wife again. :')

The visuals were brilliant, with interesting shot composition and beautiful animation. The more bombastic scenes were impressive, but I enjoyed the quiet painting-like quality of the more subdued ones just as much. Also, I found the character design to be very fitting, both slick and mature.

Can't wait to see the rest!

Came in blind into this anime

Literally the whole episode was about bro denying his love for his wife and him being all like
"theres no reason to live"

But bro at THE END he just accepts his love for his wife and does whatever challenge the emperor sent out.

Hopefully it gets better nexgt episode as ik that the first episode of many shows can b a bit long.

My impressions so far:

It looks like the adaptation doesn't capture the feelings the characters show in the manga. Plus, it doesn't seem to portray the nuance and tone correctly.

In this first episode of the anime Asaemon just comes across as a Mary Sue with no facial expression at all despite all of the impressive and horrifying things happening in front of her. No honest curiosity shown, no anything.

While in the manga first chapter she holds a constant contempt face, a condescending attitude, that proves that she already kinda knows what's going on; as we later find out Gabimaru is just in denial, not facing his true feelings. Not only that, but she also displays a graceful calmness, that comes from her family lineage and upbringing. All of this is lost in the adaptation.

Same as Gabimaru, where in the anime he just looks as an edgy depressed person full of contradiction and rash reactions, in the manga there's more of an insight of his mental state and he is not so rebellious and prone to bicker back. It's more clear than he is not just being edgy, but he himself hasn't been able to accept what's in his heart and so its acting on its own accord disregarding the mind.

Now, when talking about tone, I would say the imagery of bodies, bones, skulls, flowers and other symbolism in the pasty art style it has conveys a more dignified story that invites you take it seriously and reflect. The anime on the other hand with the clean art style and sharp color just bugs this down to edginess, since there's no congruence between tone and what's actually happening a lot of times.

This is my take after watching the first episode of the anime FIRST, not liking it as much as I expected from the concept; and then going to the manga and seeing all the difference for myself. Although, I will break just one lance in favor of the anime, since the colour makes the shinsenkyo much more impressive and the animation makes the fight stand out more.
