From Ranivus:

Well I'm semi-tech savvy but some things do make me scratch my head for hours. For the past 2 weeks, i've fixed 6 computers and made a considerable amount of money... amazing how 'googling' everything fixes 98% of all issues. But the current issue has bothered me throughout the night all they to the early morning.

Anyways heres my question:
I'm trying to reinstall Windows vista 32 OEM on this laptop. Of course the MSFT key is under the laptop, and ofc the laptop never came with any optical backup disks (really hate that all PCs are doing this). So long story short I'm using an LRM free Vista disc to reinstall windows which normally works, but this is the first time that I ever encountered the serial key was invalid. I spent a good 2 hours with all ways of alternate spelling like maybe a crumb or a booger landed ontop one of the numerics.

So I finally gave up on the key and pulled one off the internet. Ironically this works and its installing. But I'm trying not to remove the WAT since its not mine and try to keep it authentic. Any idea's why the REAL key isnt working?

I'm assuming since it is 2005 Gateway M-68 laptop, only proprietary discs can use that key. But I'm open to suggestions.

It's simple. :)

No doubt you were trying to install a genuine version of Vista using the COA label license key which you rightfully paid for, the Vista disc you used will not have the key that was used, because the key you were trying validate was an OEM key.

Your guess was correct. :)

May I know why you're reinstalling Vista? For laptops, I do find it irritating too that they never bother to give consumers a copy of the installation media. You'll have to depend on system images/repair discs that you have to make yourself and sometimes people who aren't that well-versed will probably not do that.
